Zachary Mule Interview with Joey Molland

Joey-Molland

PART ONE: INTRODUCTION

Joey Molland has known the highs and lows that comes from a life in music. He’s experienced those same highs and lows in his personal life, as well. Born in 1947, by the early 1960s, a teenage Molland was performing in bands around his hometown of Liverpool. Playing with the Assassins and the Profiles led to Joey joining a group called the Masterminds in 1965. Members of the Rolling Stones and their manager/producer, Andrew Loog Oldham, heard the group play at a club. Oldham was impressed enough to produce and release a single on his Immediate label. From the Masterminds, Joey became part of a backing band for the Merseys (Tony Crane and Bill Kinsley, formerly of the Merseybeats) called the Fruit Eating Bears. A stint in the Cryin’ Shames led to an opportunity for Molland to show off his songwriting abilities with Gary Wilson and the Rain.

When the Rain washed away, he was offered a spot with a group called the Iveys. The band had been recording music for a movie soundtrack, to be released on the Beatles’ Apple Records. Before the album MAGIC CHRISTIAN MUSIC was released, the Iveys became Badfinger and, though Joey’s name appears in the album credits, he didn’t appear on any of the tracks. The band, including Molland, however, had already begun working on the follow-up, a more proper album from Badfinger. Guitarist/singer Pete Ham, bassist Tome Evans and Joey played on various sessions for solo Beatles projects aside from their work in Badfinger. However, the guitarist/songwriter’s time in Badfinger was, to say the least, tumultuous. Things finally came to head in 1974 when, after the release of WISH YOU WERE HERE, their third album in 12 months, Joey walked away from the band. The decision was based on problems with management. These problems continued and were a factor in Pete Ham’s suicide in April, 1975.

After an album and successful tours with his new band, Natural Gas, Joey reconnected with bassist Tom Evans in 1979 for a couple of albums under the Badfinger banner (AIRWAVES and the hugely under-rated SAY NO MORE). That relationship fell apart, leading to both musicians touring their own versions of Badfinger. Evans, unable to shake the lingering effects of the gross mismanagement of the band’s early ’70s career, hung himself in September 1983. Drummer Mike Gibbins died in October, 2005, leaving Molland as the only surviving member of the once promising Badfinger. Though he still tours with a version of the band, called Joey Molland’s Badfinger, his recorded output since 1981′s SAY NO MORE have been released under his own name. The Molland discography is short: Before the release of RETURN TO MEMPHIS, Joey released his debut solo outing, AFTER THE PEARL, in 1983 with THE PILGRIM following hot on the heels… in 1993. THIS WAY UP, released in 2001, has been called “one of the best solo discs that ex-members of the Beatles never made.” An album of demos called BASIL was offered on Joey’s web-site in 1999.

Celebrated Music Duo GLASS HOUSE Releases “Blackbird” Music Video

A musical tribute to Nelson Mandela

Oakland, CA — Glass House is the acclaimed music duo featuring David Worm, best known for his work with Bobby McFerrin and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Mark Vickness. Glass House has collaborated with violinist Mads Tolling and upright bassist Dan Feiszli to release the “Blackbird” music video.

Watch the video here: http://youtu.be/g1kYZXfvAzE

Blackbird was originally written in response to the struggle for civil rights in the U.S. When Nelson Mandela died, “it seemed so right to pay tribute to him and honor the tremendous impact he made,” says Mark.

The arrangement of “Blackbird” grew out of Mark’s unique approach to stringing and tuning his 8-string acoustic guitar. David then added a vocal line and lush vocal harmonies using his VoiceLive 2 Touch. Once the guitar and vocals were established, they collaborated with Mads and Dan to come up with violin and bass parts that filled out and anchored the texture of the song.

Filmed on location by director Paul Nordin of EMB Studios, in Emeryville, California the video was edited by Sharon Knight. The music was mastered by Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering in Los Angeles.

About Glass House:
Glass House released its third album “Long Way Down” in October 2013. Songs range from the sparsely haunting solo acoustic guitar and voice rendition of Robbie Robertson’s “Broken Arrow,” to the funk string quartet intro of “Turn Away,” to the driving, world music-infused choral tapestry of “Build A Bridge.” Lyrics run the gamut from tender personal pathos (“For Now,” “Thank You”) to timely political and social narratives (“Turn Away,” “Where I Belong”). Album producer/bassist Jon Evans is well known for his years recording and touring with Tori Amos and Third Eye Blind. Two-time Grammy winners The Turtle Island String Quartet contribute remarkable talents on two songs. Also appearing are drummers Scott Amendola (Charlie Hunter), L.A. studio ace MB Gordy (Frank Zappa, Green Day, Bill Withers), tabla virtuoso Ty Burhoe, violinist Mads Tolling (Stanley Clarke) and vocalists Ashling Cole (Prince) and Julianna Graffagna (Kitka).

Hundreds of thousands of fans have viewed the widely-acclaimed videos by Glass House. When the live-version video of “Broken Arrow” was first released, it was the seventh most-viewed YouTube video according to billboard.com.

Front Row Features Interview with Mike Pinder

Pinder

Box Set Commemorates Mellotronic Man Mike Pinder

By ANGELA DAWSON

Front Row Features

HOLLYWOOD—Growing up in Birmingham, England during and just after World War II, Mike Pinder would steal away to a wooden box in the backyard where he would lay down and stare up at the moon and the stars, imagining what it would be like to travel to different worlds. His love for all things celestial earned him the nickname Mickey the Moonboy.

As he grew older, Pinder developed a passion for music, playing guitar and piano, as well as writing and singing. He formed his first band El Riot and the Rebels as a teenager, but then joined the British army, where he wound up stationed in Germany. That’s where he first heard The Beatles on the radio. It was a life-changing moment for Pinder. He decided it was time to get out of the military and back into music. Luckily, he had a very understanding commanding officer, who released him due to a minor foot deformity.

Once free to return to England, Pinder got together with a friend, Ray Thomas, a flautist, and formed the Krew Cats. They soon added a drummer (Graeme Edge), a singer/guitarist (Denny Laine) and bassist (Clint Warwick), renaming themselves The Moody Blues in 1964. Their first album, The Magnificent Moodies, yielded the hit single “Go Now.” Other hits followed, including “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon” and “Dawn (is a Feeling) on other albums.

Sax Icon and Jazz Legend DAVE LIEBMAN joins Machine Mass on new MoonJune Records Release ‘Inti’

New York, NY – MACHINE MASS feat. DAVE LIEBMAN pairs the legendary saxophonist (Miles Davis, Elvin Jones…) with longtime collaborator drummer Tony Bianco (Elton Dean, Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker, douBt) and guitarist Michel Delville (The Wrong Object, douBt, Comicoperando). Graced by Dave Liebman’s extraordinary phrasing and improvising skills, ‘Inti’ combines free improvisation with tight rhythmic structures, post-Bitches Brew time signatures with ambient episodes, spreading across different musical and spiritual realities, both playfully and intensely. The band ventures into the fiery electro-jazz territories explored by Bianco and Delville’s recent Machine Mass Trio, which also showcased both musicians’ capacity to listen closely and improvise over unpredictable chord, rhythm and time changes while handling live electronics and computer loops.

Recorded live in the studio with no overdubs (in just one afternoon, no less!), this monumental session bears witness to three seasoned musicians in top form – producing music that is fresh, challenging, profound and moving. Rules are acknowledged and rules are discarded, and the resulting sonic bouillabaisse, ‘Inti’, signals some truly exciting new directions for progressive jazz.

“This is truly a unique musical environment that I recorded with these two wonderful musicians. Shall I use the word ‘post’ everything? There’s some ‘On The Corner’ here, some punk rock, some techno stuff, etc., etc. The resulting bouillabaisse is extraordinary and novel … challenging music and definitely cutting edge.” – Dave Liebman

“…this disc is a throwback to the mid-seventies before the term ‘fusion’ was used and abused. Hence, this is jazz-rock at its best. Refreshing and exciting! Another gem from Moonjune treasure chest.” – Bruce Lee Gallanter, DownTown Music Gallery

Musicians:

“Dave Liebman is one of the most creative jazz saxophonists on the planet” (John Fordham, The Guardian, London) “…the most breathtaking sweep of emotions that might be heard on soprano saxophone for some time to come.” (All About Jazz)

“Michel Delville’s fantastic guitar leads build (once again) to the far corners of the universe” (Dick Metcalf, Rotcod Zzaj) “… quite stunning whether soloing or filling out the spaces between” (Duncan Heining, Jazzwise Magazine, UK)

“Tony Bianco allies grace and power, propelling both sessions with unflinching stamina” (Francois Couture, All Music Guide)

Missing Persons’ Dale Bozzio Premieres Stunning New Single From The Long Awaited Comeback Album Missing In Action!

Los Angeles, CA – She is one of the most recognizable singers to come out of the ‘80s art rock movement, A true original whose signature vocal style was matched only by her iconic outfits that set the standard for flamboyant fashion in rock music. Now, Missing Persons’ Dale Bozzio returns with a brand new album that critic Dave Thompson describes as “like waking up in a sleeping bag full of your favorite MTV memories. The ‘80s as they always wanted to sound!” The album, Missing In Action, will be released on March 4th on both CD & Vinyl by Cleopatra Records, but fans can check out the album’s first single “Hello, Hello,” which is making its premiere on USAToday.com accompanied by a scrapbook video as well as an in-depth interview with Dale.

Check out the new single here:

The single is also available as an “instant gratification” track on the album’s iTunes pre-order: http://georiot.co/22B5

Missing In Action is a much welcomed return to the catchy songs and danceable beats laced with a progressive rock aesthetic that always set Missing Persons apart from the pack. The 10-song set was expertly produced by the multi-talented Billy Sherwood (formerly of prog rock institution Yes) who worked closely with Dale to craft an album that can stand alongside the Missing Persons catalog while still showcasing Dale’s growth as both a performer and a person. “Do Or Die” kicks things off with an urgent keyboard riff and a dramatic vocal performance from Dale, proving that her voice remains as strong as ever. Next, the propulsive, driving beat of tracks like “Walk Into The Sun,” and “Speed Of Light” keep the energy riding high. But the album’s true centerpiece is an emotional ballad, “The More We Love,” which Dale recorded just days after her mother passed away, and contains perhaps the most moving performance of Dale’s long, historic career. This is the album that Missing Persons fans and dedicated Dale Bozzio disciples have been waiting for, for over two decades! Don’t miss it!

1. Do Or Die
2. Hello, Hello
3. Walk Into The Sun
4. Covert Operation
5. The More We Love

8. If I Gave You My Mind
9. Siren Song

Bop-N-Jazz Review of Getting the Holy Ghost Across by Bill Nelson

Bill Nelson Getting the Holy Ghost Across

Bill Nelson Getting The Holy Ghost Across Esoteric 2014

Bill Nelson was and continues to remain a lyrical visionary just slightly ahead of his time.
Brent Black / http://www.criticaljazz.com

In the late 1970’s Bill Nelson was heralded as one of the finest guitarists in England. A member of the legendary British art rock pioneers Be Bop Deluxe, Nelson was unknowingly charting a lyrical course of influence for progressive rock with his technical precision on the fret board and a lyrically inventive course of imagery that continues to inspire today. Quirky, eclectic, at times experimental all fall short in attempting to place this proverbial musical square peg in a round hole. The 1986 release Getting The Holy Ghost Across” has been a rare and coveted gem among collectors and is now getting a second chance at life as a stellar reissue.

Dutch Rock Legends FOCUS’ Hit Song “Hocus Pocus” Featured In New ‘RoboCop’ Film!

London, UK – Focus fans rejoice! The group’s 1972 worldwide hit “Hocus Pocus” is now being featured in the major motion picture ‘RoboCop’ starring Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton. The song, which features the distinctive and virtuosic yodeling by keyboardist Thijs Van Leer, was originally released on the band’s critically acclaimed second album ‘Moving Waves’.

Check out the ‘RoboCop’ promo clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8vuu0ZbvX8

Says Thijs, “A good friend of mine was so lucky to be present at the pre-premiere of the new ROBOCOP and he called me WHILE ‘Hocus Pocus’ was played during the film, shouting, ‘Hey Thijs, they put your genius song on the best sequence of the picture!!! Congratulations!!!!!’ Since that very moment I am crazily happy about this luxurious feeling: as the composer, the yodeller, Hammond-organ player & flautist!! Halleluya!!!”

With their unique brand of progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the ’70s as the most successful and appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. Fronted by founding member Thijs Van Leer, and best known for their hits “Hocus Pocus”, “House of The King” and “Sylvia”, as well as critically acclaimed albums ‘Moving Waves’, ‘Focus 3’ and ‘Hamburger Concerto’, the iconic Dutch music masters are back with their tenth album, which is guaranteed to please their legions of fans!

After a comeback in the early 2000’s, which resulted in the well-received albums ‘Focus 8’ and ‘Focus 9’, the band regrouped with a fantastic new line-up. Along with Thijs van Leer on vocals, flute and keyboards, back on the drums is beloved Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden, who joined the group on their second album ‘Moving Waves’ in 1972. Internationally renowned for his rhythmic skills, Pierre remains a defining factor in the Focus sound. Bassist Bobby Jacobs, who comes from a well-acclaimed Dutch musical family, and guitarist Menno Gootjes, who participated in Focus at an earlier stage, complete the band’s current line-up.

Focus has been performing select shows in support of their forthcoming 11th album ‘Golden Oldies’, which features re-recordings of classic Focus tracks. Thijs explains, “Producing ‘Golden Oldies’ is tricky. Both the die hard fans and the 2014 Focus-members were having doubts about this enterprise, because we didn’t know if the recent recordings would match the original material, notwithstanding the fact that we had so much fun in doing the session, quick, romantic, virtuoso, full of funny moments & profoundness; But… the final mix turns out to be fantastic and we all are proud to release this album at our earliest convenience!!”

Prog Band An Endless Sporadic To Release New Single and Video In Support Of Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 Cruise Appearance

Prog Band An Endless Sporadic To Release New Single and Video In Support Of Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 Cruise Appearance

“A wild progressive sonic ride. It’s thrilling to hear progressive rock that is fresh and inspiring. These guys are obviously very skilled and their music is brimming over with youthful creativity and vitality.” – Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)

Los Angeles, CA – One of the most talked about up and coming prog groups of 2014, An Endless Sporadic, is releasing a new single “Spaceship Factory” in support of their upcoming appearance on the Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 cruise hosted by Transatlantic’s Mike Portnoy! The band, comprising of Zach Kamins (guitars, keyboards), Andy Gentile (drums), Tony Solis (guitar), and Eloy Palacios (bass), have also filmed a new video to the single and can be watched here: http://youtu.be/jCe8NcS3yBs

Says Zach, “I composed the main theme for ‘Spaceship Factory’ a couple of years ago with the intention of it being part of an orchestral piece that would eventually morph into a progressive rock piece. I’ve always loved film scores in movies about big space adventures. So, I wrote a piece while imagining landing on an alien planet and coming across a factory building spaceships. When I originally came up with the theme, I wasn’t sure how I wanted to develop the rest of the piece. Now that An Endless Sporadic has reunited, it seemed like the perfect vehicle for this piece.”

The band’s new single will be part of a forthcoming EP that will also include a studio recording of the song “Derpulous” (the band released a demo version of the track a few months ago) as well as brand new material. It is also the 6 year anniversary of An Endless Sporadic’s first EP ‘Ameliorate’, so plans to re-record a couple songs from that EP as bonus tracks are in the works. The group is planning on running a Pledge Music campaign to help fund the recordings.

Says Zach, “We have enough music demoed for a full length album and depending on how the EP does, we might want to repackage the EP as a full length later on. The idea is that because our music has a sporadic nature but also explores theme development, we want to try and find ways to expand on older material while introducing plenty of fresh material.”

Zach and Andy originally formed the band in 2005 in Houston, TX through a series of random jam/improv sessions together. Eventually, Andy moved to Los Angeles to work for Neversoft, while Zach moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. The duo continued to write music together over the internet and eventually their song “Sun Of Pearl” was featured in Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland video game. The track “Impulse” was added as a bonus song in Guitar Hero 3, and the track “Anything” has been featured in Guitar Hero: World Tour as free Downloadable Content in the Neversoft Track Pack. The band has a wide rage of musical influences, which can be heard throughout their work, and include ELP, King Crimson, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Sikth, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Primus, Mr. Bungle and Ozric Tentacles.

“A wild progressive sonic ride. It’s thrilling to hear progressive rock that is fresh and inspiring. These guys are obviously very skilled and their music is brimming over with youthful creativity and vitality.” – Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)

Prog guitarist Roine Stolt, best known for his work with The Flower Kings, Transatlantic and Agents of Mercy, produced the duo’s self-titled, full length album with Jonas Reingold (of The Flower Kings) featured on bass. Roine relates, “A couple years ago I got contacted by an American band to help produce their record. I knew little about them but heard they’ve been into doing music for gaming. They were a dynamic duo called An Endless Sporadic. As soon as I said ‘yes’ I got my mailbox flooded with audio files with a gazillion ‘out there’ ideas. Zach Kamins, who is the main writer, is a young man with a vivid imagination and all the music he writes expose all freedom that I remember from yesteryears prog. Zach and Andy propose that progressive rock can be played even today, by ‘kids’ that could as well be…my kids. They have the relentless energy and the will to go beyond formula and I can see great things coming from the band in the future. Now it helps that they are friendly and fun people too.”

Here’s what the press has raved about An Endless Sporadic’s 2008 debut ‘Ameliorate’ EP and their self-titled, full length release in 2009:

“The whole album is an onslaught of riffs. The band never seams to run out of ideas of original guitar riffs often over layered with melodic leads. But what makes this band unique is more than just their interesting guitar parts linked together by odd time signatures, melodic soloing and chaotic breakdowns. Each song features unique extras that separate them from the rest of the songs on the EP and make everything sound fresh.” – Simon Harris, SCREAM!

“Overall, this is some pretty impressive stuff, 34 minutes of instrumental jazz-fusion, progressive metal, and progressive rock, with equal amounts of chops and well written memorable songs. Expect big things from this outfit folks.” – Peter Pardo, Sea Of Tranquility

“The bottom line with AES’s debut album is to never get too used to one particular tune or motif as it will disappear before you realize how much you loved it…it’s nonetheless a vibrant display of their skills.” – Joe Osborne, Geekadelphia

An Endless Sporadic is excited about their upcoming performance on the Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 cruise, which runs from February 18-22. Others performing are legendary Jon Anderson of YES, Transatlantic, Portnoy Sheehan Macalpine Sherinian, Adrian Belew, Devin Townsend, Spock’s Beard, The Flower Kings, Animals as Leaders, Periphery and many others. Says Zach, “Sixthman ran a competition called Sixthman Soundcheck, where they were selecting three up and coming progressive rock bands to add to the bill. We actually weren’t selected, but we later received an e-mail that Mike Portnoy had a hard time choosing the three bands and decided to add a 5th stage to the cruise. We were selected to play on that stage.”

Audio Fidelity To Release Barry White ‘Can’t Get Enough’ Limited Numbered Edition 180g Vinyl On February 18, 2014

“…slinky, funky and seductive… A unique and timeless piece of artistry.”

Camarillo, CA – Much to the excitement of Barry White fans worldwide, Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity is releasing a limited numbered edition 180g vinyl LP of soul legend Barry White’s critically acclaimed 1974 masterpiece ‘Can’t Get Enough’ on February 18, 2014! ‘Can’t Get Enough’ made Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time! This is the first time Barry White’s music has been given the audiophile treatment! It’s also the first time the lyrics to all the vocals on the record are included, listed on the inside of the attractive glossy coated gatefold jacket.

By the time he hit his stride in 1974 with ‘Can’t Get Enough’, Barry White had firmly established his vocal persona on the contemporary music scene. This is the third in his stellar run of album successes. The album topped the Billboard 200 and R&B charts and peaked at #4 in the UK.

Barry White’s allure lay in his ability to craft beautiful love songs and embellish them with luxurious strings, a great rhythm section, and a gospel-styled female chorus. The combination is never more evident than on the classic title track as well as the song “You’re My First, My Last, My Everything”, an anthem that appealed to White’s pop audience. Both of these uptempo #1 chart-topping tracks were early echoes of the danceable, orchestrated funk stylings that became the sound of the disco era.

In addition to the hits, “I Can’t Believe You Love Me” and “Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It” qualify as two of White’s most fetching slow burners. The album is bordered by “Mellow Mood (Pts. 1 & 2)”, two brief orchestral instrumentals that showcase White’s knack for layered arrangements.

TRACKS:

Side One
1. Mellow Mood (Pt. I)
2. You’re the First, the Last, My Everything
3. I Can’t Believe You Love Me

Side Two
1. Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe
2. Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It
3. I Love You More Than Anything (In This World Girl)
4. Mellow Mood (Pt. II)
