Swedish Quintet of Progressive Rock Royalty Agents of Mercy To Release New Concept Album ‘The Black Forest’

10/12/2011 – Sweden – Progressive rock aficionados across the globe are clamoring for the new release by the Swedish quintet of progressive rock royalty Agents of Mercy. The celebrated ensemble’s third release, ‘The Black Forest’, is a concept album; one 56-minute mega-tune of prog bliss edited into separate slices. Now you’ve heard the term ‘concept’ a million times, but the new album by Agents of Mercy takes the idiom to a higher level, all the while pushing the prog envelope to its extremes.

‘The Black Forest’ is a surreal journey – a mysteriously glowing metaphor for a trip through dark, disturbing, scary times; a lifelong uncertain journey encompassed by greed, lust, hunger for power and money, eternal life, and mind control. And guess what – we’re the prey!!! This is Agents of Mercy’s first concept album with a longer song format. Tales of dark future times, seen through the eyes of a weary traveler in wiggly warped woods of our imaginary journey some 300 years ago. Elzbeth Bathory meets unholy rapists and flesheaters in a quiet town and deformed freaks of a traveling sinister circus haunt you at bedtime. Did you lock the door? Is the monster your neighbor?

“The music this time is a more rock oriented path we’ve taken,” says guitarist, band leader and Flower Kings legend Roine Stolt, “for good reasons – we are a rock ‘n’ roll band at the core, but we sprinkle bits of symphonic, world, jazz, medieval and folk. Guitars and drums have moved forward in the soundscapes, but the gnarly Moogs and mellotrons are still present, this time a bit more haunting and angular. The songs are longer and more elaborate, but sometimes with an iron fist of raw power riffage that resembles Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin or early King Crimson rather than YES or Genesis. Don’t fret – in this 56-minute journey there is plenty of symphonic bombardment too. In fact, we think there is even more than on previous albums!”

The music press has described the new album as, “More muscle, more progressive interplay, fat riffing insane keyboard shredding, but with plenty of melody combined with pure classic prog and symphonic moments.”

“We laid down the basic tracks on 24-track analog tape in a lovely studio in the middle of Sweden’s countryside in April,” says Roine, “a place called Varnhem (very dark age). The studio is a top notch, super hi tech, newly built million dollar sanctuary – to our ears it sounds bigger than pure digital; modern but yet fat analog.”

Agents of Mercy are:
Nad Sylvan – Lead Vocals and Keyboards
Roine Stolt – Guitars and Vocals
Lalle Larsson – Keyboards and Vocals
Jonas Reingold – Bass and Bass Pedals
Walle Wahlgren – Drums and Percussion

And what does the immediate future hold for the Agents of Mercy? “I would love to perform ‘The Black Forest’ as one long piece of music, but we’re awaiting the reaction and have not yet decided since we play plenty of older material,” explains Roine. “We’ve just finished a short promotional tour of shows for the release in Europe, and will plan for a longer tour the beginning of next year, In the meanwhile we are playing one-off gigs and festivals. We are also working on a few video things for the album and eventually a vinyl version of it.”

In closing Roine has a message for Agents of Mercy fans around the world: “My message is pretty much what it has been for decades: ‘Love is the only answer’ – with the power of love and compassion almost anything is possible. In the absence of love, the world and our souls are in decay. This new album is indeed called ‘The Black Forest’, but it does not for a minute salute the darkness, it just tries to point out that it exists here and now and that we can turn to the light at any moment – such is the power of will!”

Magma Legend Christian Vander To Release Tribute To John Coltrane

10/10/2011 – Paris, France – Music visionary and Magma legend Christian Vander will be releasing a tribute to jazz innovator John Coltrane on October 15, 2011 – l’homme suprême .

“On July 17, 1967, time stopped. The great saxophone player John Coltrane left us. I was lucky enough to discover, at a very young age, an exceptional musician. The beauty, the spirituality, the strength, the softness, as well as the fragility of notes. The expression of that sound which spoke to me like a voice. From that moment on, he became my daily bread. Indispensable. No one can ignore the immensity of his visionary works. It still resonates in all of today’s musical productions, and certainly in those of tomorrow.

In 1997, I had a dream, a record, dedicated to John Coltrane. A child painted the sun on a white cardboard, and below that sun, he wrote a title in blue… John Coltrane l’homme suprême.”

Christian Vander

This CD was recorded in 2011, day after day, between July 17, the date in which John Coltrane departed, and July 21, the day on which his funeral was held. On each day, an offering, a musical, poetic gift, for him, was created in real time. On the 21st at midnight, the record was completed.

Featuring: Christian Vander, Stella Vander, Simon Goubert, Pierre-Michel Sivadier, Frederic d’Oeslnitz, Phillippe Dardelle, Isabelle Feuillebois, Herve Aknin, Marcus Linon, Sylvie Fisichella, Sandrine Destefanis, Julien Tessier

“For my work, it is still Coltrane who actually gives me the real material to work on, to be able to move on.” Christian Vander

Available October 15, 2011 – CD in DIGIPACK + 24 page booklet

YES Legends Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman To Tour The US Fall 2011

9/15/2011 – Asheville, NC – Much to the delight of fortunate music fans in the Eastern part of North America, music legends and former YES members Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman will be playing a select number of engagements this coming Fall 2011. The legendary duo performed a series of successful concerts in the UK in 2010 in support of their critically acclaimed CD release ‘The Living Tree’, and are now bringing their highly anticipated show to America!

Having worked together on and off since 1971’s groundbreaking YES masterwork ‘Fragile’, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman have traveled similar musical paths that have eventually and happily led their careers back together again! Now once again, the duo promise a magical evening of music and humor for all who attend! “Expect a night of music, full of YES classics and new adventures in song from ‘The Living Tree’ album and moments of brilliance, humor and affection borne from a friendship and musical partnership that has lasted 40 years”, says Jon. “We knew from the responses on the last YES tour that the acoustic section was extremely popular and that many of the pieces could be re-arranged and adapted to make very interesting and hopefully enjoyable new ways of playing YES music and our own music,” adds Rick.

The tour is being produced by Metropolitan Talent Presents and is booked by Keith Naisbitt of Los Angeles based Agency for the Performing Arts. John Scher co-CEO of Metropolitan says, “We are incredibly proud to be presenting the North American debut of this legendary duo! Jon and Rick ARE the voice and sound of YES, as well as famously successful solo performers! This tour will be areal treat for their legions of fans.”

Here’s what the UK press has said about the Anderson Wakeman tour:

“One of the songs played on the night was the impressive ’23/24/11′ (from Anderson Wakeman – The Living Tree), the true story of a soldier out in Afghanistan who had that amount of time left to serve as his tour of duty. Looking round at the audience there wasn’t a dry eye left in the house. Once more the combination of Jon’s amazing vocal style and the lyrics work perfectly.” – Ian D. Hall, LS Media, UK

“Anderson showed yet again that he is the true voice of YES…Wakeman provided the keyboard wizardry and a stream of stories.” – Ian Harvey, Express & Star, UK

“Supporters of these two legends can witness close up, their unique bond which spans almost 40 years; and why these two are being billed as the ‘Heart and Soul’ of Prog giants YES.” – Classic Media, UK
“Constant humorous interludes and witty interjections from the pair helped enliven the show and added a welcomed lightness. Not only were these anecdotes entertaining, they were also insightful…these two are a perfect creative partnership.” – Neil Mach, Staines Weblog

Jazz-Fusion All-Star Trio Scott Henderson Jeff Berlin Mike Clark To Tour The US

8/26/2011 – Clearwater, FL – One of the most highly anticipated tours of 2011 featuring jazz-fusion legends Scott Henderson, Jeff Berlin and Mike Clark will commence on Sept 14th. The power trio promises to deliver an evening full of depth-defying virtuosic performances guaranteed to thrill and inspire all that attend. “Henderson-Berlin-Clark are the Clapton-Bruce-Baker of fusion music!” says Jeff Berlin

Scott Henderson is considered one of the premier jazz-fusion guitarists performing on the planet today. Although Henderson claims to be more of a blues-rock player, with influences like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Ritchie Blackmore, it was the influence of jazz that led him to the style of playing and composing he is now famous for. Henderson has recorded and toured with such notable artists as Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, Jean-Luc Ponty, Jeff Berlin and ‘Players’, and a four year stint with Weather Report legend Joe Zawinul. He formed the band Tribal Tech in 1984 with bassist Gary Willis, and recorded nine critically acclaimed albums. In 1991 Scott Henderson was named by Guitar World as the #1 Jazz Guitarist, and in January 1992 he was named #1 Jazz Guitarist in Guitar Player’s Annual Reader’s Poll. Henderson has also released three well-received solo albums as well as two releases with Vital Tech Tones, a trio collaboration with bassist Victor Wooten and ex-Journey/Vital Information leader Steve Smith on drums. As is often the case with a musician of Scott’s caliber, the demand is great that he share his knowledge with the current generation of guitarists. He is on the faculty at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, and has written columns for Guitar Player, Guitar World and Guitar School magazines.

Jeff Berlin is a legend of the electric bass, considered by many to be the finest electric bass player in the world. A true master of the bass, Jeff Berlin has played with the likes of Bill Bruford, Alan Holdsworth, AWBH and George Benson. Jeff Berlin’s resume reads like the who’s who of the higher echelon of music artists. Jeff Berlin was even asked to join Van Halen, an invitation that he actually turned down. Not only is Jeff Berlin a innovator in the jazz field, but rock players are constantly siting him as their major influence. Carlos Santana called Jeff the “best bassist in the world”, while Rush’s Geddy Lee used the phrase “best bassist on the planet!” Jeff Berlin’s innovative bass playing has influenced a generation of bass players world-wide. He was voted #1 Jazz Bassist by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. Jeff also pioneered a technique called ‘two handed tapping’, when he performed this style on the track “Motherlode” from his 1985 debut solo album called ‘Champion’. The founder of The Players School of Music in Clearwater, Florida, Jeff has also been at the forefront of music education for almost 30 years. His columns in Guitar Player and Bass Player magazines were the most read columns due to their controversial content of music education. Jeff single-handedly has re-vamped music education by dismissing popular methods of learning such as using electronic tuners, metronomes, handgrips, tablature, or any study method that does not include musical content.

What can be said about Mike Clark except that he is a true drum legend! Mike Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970’s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s ‘Thrust’ album, which garnered him an international cult following. While often referred to as the “Tony Williams of funk”, Mike considers himself a jazz drummer, and in fact has become one of the most vital to sit behind a set. He’s performed with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Vince Guaraldi, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Rob Dixon, Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw, Donald Harrison, Larry Coryell, Jack Wilkins, Mike Wolff, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, James Genus, Bob Hurst, Chris Potter, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Nat Adderly, Oscar Brown Jr., Bill Doggett, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Mose Allison, Maxine Brown, Gil Evans and his orchestra and many illuminating etceteras too numerous to list.

And now, these three legends of jazz-fusion have come together to form a supergroup that will no less than amaze all who attend their dynamic performances.

Santana / Journey Legend Gregg Rolie To Play Put In Bay, OH

7/21/2011 – Houston, TX – Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Gregg Rolie, best known for his vocals and keyboard work with legendary music groups Santana and Journey, will be performing at The Sand Bar in Put in Bay, OH on August 6, 2011. The Gregg Rolie Band will be performing electrifying versions of several Santana classics such as “Evil Ways”, “Black Magic Woman” “Soul Sacrifice”, “Jingo” and “No One To Depend On” as well as tracks from Rolie’s previous effort ‘Roots’ and new songs. The Gregg Rolie Band consists of Adrian Areas (son of original Santana percussionist Jose Chepito Areas) on Timbales, drummer Ron Wikso (who was also in The Storm), Elliot “Toby” Borrero on congas, Rocket Ritchotte on guitars, internationally acclaimed bassist Gary Brown and former Jean Luc Ponty keyboardist Wally Minko.

As you might imagine from his work with Santana and Journey, Gregg is no stranger to great musicianship. Given his experience and his desire to make the music the best it can be, he has chosen some of the best musicians in the world to bring his band and its music to life. Gregg was determined to resurrect the sound he helped shape and make famous as Santana’s original lead singer and keyboard player, while at the same time bringing it forward to the 21st century. To do that required finding just the right mix of experience, musicianship and chemistry. Having worked with some of the biggest names in music over the years and having toured the world many times over, these musicians have the skills to interpret this music in the way it is meant to be interpreted, as Gregg so intimately knows.

“The band are great, because we all really enjoy each other and I think the sound reflects the fun we are having,” Gregg told Voices of Latin Rock.
