Former Dressed To Kill Member, KISS Tribute Drummer, Ian Danter Releases Debut Hard Rock CD ‘Prove You Wrong’

London, UK – Muli-instrumentalist and former drummer with the longest running KISS tribute act Dressed To Kill, Ian Danter has released his debut hard rock CD ‘Prove You Wrong’ on Cherry Red Records. Ian Danter, a well-respected musician in his own right, can proficiently play several instruments, which he displays on his new CD. Ian plays drums, guitars, bass, keyboards and sings background vocals and lead on the three tracks. Lee Small, lead vocalist from the UK hard rock outfit SHY, lends his powerful Dio-esque vocals to 12 of the 15 tracks on the CD. Upon first listening to ‘Prove You Wrong’ classic rock artists like Rainbow and Dio immediately spring to mind. Ian explains, “I loved the music I grew up on because it made me stop and listen. It also made me appreciate good melody and how to construct a song. That is what ‘Prove You Wrong’ set out to do – to recreate the era of the song, the riff, the FEEL rather than following a trend.”

Some say sports and rock and roll don’t mix.. yet in the case of Ian Danter, this notion has been proven wrong. As well as his fame in the music industry, Ian is also known for his highly successful and fanatical fan-supported Saturday evening show ‘Football First’ on talkSPORT Radio, as well as presenting both local and national radio programmes in a wide variety of formats for well over a decade. Some may find it peculiar that a renowned sportscaster with a immense fan following would be able to deliver a hard rocking, well written and produced album, yet the CD title says it all. Ian explains, “As for the title, ‘Prove You Wrong’…well that is all about my desire to show that sports broadcasting and rock music are not mutually exclusive career choices! You can be credible as both, despite conventional wisdom, and I want to ‘prove’ that with this album.”

Because of Ian’s fame and work schedule as sports presenter, recording his new CD was not something that happened overnight. Says Ian, “I’ve been meaning to record my original stuff for over a decade now. The spark to actually get me into the studio was a little unfortunate – a couple of local musicians and friends passed away recently, including SHY guitarist/songwriter Steve Harris. At Steve’s funeral, I started talking to a producer friend and the subject came around to my stuff… Steve had been able to complete recording SHY’s best album just before his passing, and it suddenly occurred to me that I had to record my songs as soon as I could…you never know what the future might bring, after all.”

Ian’s musical influences can be heard loud and clear on his new CD, in particular his earliest musical loves Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and Rainbow. Ian recalls, “My older brothers owned ‘Machine Head’ by Deep Purple, ‘Live & Dangerous’ by Thin Lizzy and ‘Rising’ by Rainbow. Rainbow and Ronnie Dio’s voice were a huge influence on me. ‘Rising’ especially really captivated me…the riffs, the vocals, the sheer scale of it all just blew me away. Then one day at my cousin’s place I saw a couple of KISS albums in his collection and asked to borrow one – that was ‘Alive!’ and it was a total life-changer and had a profound effect on me. Before long I was buying everything I could find in their back catalogue – which wasn’t an easy task in 1970’s England! I’ve remained a staunch foot soldier in the KISS Army ever since.” Ian played drums with the longest running KISS tribute band Dressed To Kill for 5 years. Other musical influences include Dio, Rush, Foo Fighters, Wildhearts, Cheap Trick, Jellyfish, Pantera, Journey and Aerosmith, to name a few.

In closing, Ian has this to impart to his fans and listeners, “I hope you get as much out of listening to these songs as I did putting them together. It was a real labor of love…and hard work should always pay off!”

Ian Danter’s CD release party will be held on Friday March 22, 2013 at Birmingham City FC’s Jasper Carrott Suite.

Swiss Prog Ensemble Zenit Release Highly Anticipated Third Album ‘The Chandrasekhar Limit’

Swiss Prog Ensemble Zenit Release Highly Anticipated Third Album ‘The Chandrasekhar Limit’

Switzerland – One of the most respected progressive rock bands ever to emerge from Switzerland, Zenit, have released their third album ‘The Chandrasekhar Limit’ on Galileo Records on January 28, 2013. Possibly the most ambitious release of 2013, right from the beginning of Zenit’s new 69-minute masterpiece, Andy Thommen (formerly Clepsydra), affixes a seal with his distinctive bass playing on the first song (“Awaken”). Later, with the start of the guitar, you will somewhat be reminded of the Clepsydra sound: awesome guitar-bass team play! Here is the beginning of what to expect from this brilliant album – quality!

Says Andy Thommen, “We’ve chosen ‘The Chandrasekhar Limit’ as the title because this mathematical threshold defines if a white dwarf star remains a star or becomes a black hole… So, as a band we feel that we are passing a crossroads without knowing where this track leads to. We do not know if we are above or below the Chandrasekhar limit.”

Zenit was founded in Switzerland in 1998 by bass player Andy Thommen, Keyboardist Ivo Bernasconi and drummer Gigio Pedruzzi, based on their wealth of experience with bands like Clepsydra, Changes and Brainstorm. In 2001, now with the addition of singer Lorenzo Sonognini, Zenit released their debut CD ‘Pravritti’ with Italian and English lyrics, followed by various inspiring live performances in relevant prog festivals. In 2006, with the addition of Luigi Biamino on guitars, the band released the second album called ‘Surrender’. With captivating, elaborate songs and music that harkens to the work of bands such as Genesis, Marillion, Supertramp, Kansas and Gentle Giant, Zenit’s second album garnered praise from critics and fans alike worldwide.

Says Andy, “After ‘Surrender’ we did several shows, and we already had different pieces of tunes for this new album we were working on or just playing to see how it feels. On our show in Montreux, which was also filmed, we played two songs that made it onto ‘The Chandrasekhar Limit’: ‘Awaken’ and ‘PiGreco’. We started writing and demoing the new album with our previous drummer Luigi Pedruzzi. For most of the songs we started on a rough idea by our keyboardist Ivo Bernasconi, then the whole band worked on it, until it was ready for a demo recording. Working on it for us means play it over and over again with absolute freedom to improvise changes, and normally when we get a few ‘wow’ reactions in the band we know we are close. The longest track ‘The Daydream Suite’ (25 minutes) was different. Ivo had just a basic idea; we started playing on it, it just came one note after the the other, one chord after the other. This was a magic band experience. When we finished recording the demos our drummer left the band. We made one single call to a friend and drummer. As he was teaching drums in Lausanne (in the French speaking part of Switzerland) we asked him if by chance he knew someone… His answer was ‘Me’! Within a bit more than a half a year he was ready to record the drum tracks for ‘The Chandrasekhar Limit’ with a fresh breath of new energy! In sum, the essence of our way to work is: play it, play it and play it again until it sounds good, and only then you can start recording.”

“The new Zenit album ‘The Chandrasekhar Limit’ is superb, some of the best modern prog rock I’ve heard for a long, long while”. – Paul Baker, ARfm, UK

Zenit’s musical influences are varied and diverse and include artists such as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Flower Kings and Spock’s Beard. Stand out tracks on Zenit’s new album: The marvelous 17-minute song “Matrimandir” brings a breath of Asian sounds in a very subtle but delicate way without being brash, despite the Sanskrit lyrics now and then. The 25-minute opus “The Daydream Suite” brings to mind the work of Pink Floyd, including all the main elements a prog suite should have: crazy keyboard solos, melodic guitar lines, cool bass parts and complex choirs, harmoniously in action. The rocking instrumental sound of “Pulsar”, the sweet and sinful ballad “Club Lady” and the screaming-jazzy “PiGreco” song, jointly make up an impressive and progressive rock album of the 21st century.

Says Andy, “There was no structured plan for this album. No plan to make it symphonic, epic, neo or retro…it just came out as it is. There are jazzy and samba rhythms, even Sanskrit lyrics bits and Indian sounds and ambiances. The only thing we wanted to create was an ensemble of very different ambiances and feelings, and transmit to the listener the fun we have playing these songs.” Plans to tour in support of the release of Zenit’s ‘The Chandrasekhar Linit’ are currently in the works.

Legendary Singer/Songwriter Greg Lake To Release Highly Anticipated ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ Live CD – February 25, 2013

For Immediate Release

Legendary Singer/Songwriter Greg Lake To Release Highly Anticipated ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ Live CD – February 25, 2013

London, UK – Hot on the heels of a successful solo tour of the US, UK and sold out tour of Italy, legendary singer/songwriter Greg Lake will be releasing a new live CD ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ on Esoteric Antenna / Manticore Records on February 25, 2013. Capturing all the excitement of Greg Lake live in concert, ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ documents Greg’s musical history, from his beginnings with King Crimson to super-stardom with ELP to his illustrious solo career, through stories and songs. Performing all his most popular songs including “21st Century Schizoid Man”, “From The Beginning”, “Still….You Turn Me On”, “Lend Your Love To Me Tonight”, “C’est la Vie” and “Karn Evil 9”, as well as homages to Elvis Presley and The Beatles and Curtis Mayfield, ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ is a must have for Greg Lake fans and music fans everywhere!

Hailed as an “artistic triumph” and “the experience of a lifetime”, ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ gives new insight into Greg Lake and his influences, while showcasing in concert the influence his writing and voice have had not only for rock and roll, but contemporary music of all types.

As a founding member of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Greg Lake has been a major force in music for over 40 years. In 2012 he embarked on a successful solo tour to perform ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’, a unique concert experience that was conceived whilst Greg was writing his autobiography. Greg explains, “From time to time during the writing of my autobiography, these songs would crop up that were in some way crucial or extremely important in the development of my career. These were not always songs that I had written myself, but sometimes songs that had been written and performed by other artists as well. I realized that what they actually represented was the journey that I had shared together with the audience over all these years. Behind these songs there were often stories to be told and it occurred to me that the same must be true for the audience as well. It was then that I thought of the idea of doing a series of very small intimate concerts where I could perform these songs and exchange stories with the audience, in a way reliving the time when the music we shared together really became part of our identity and in a way became the backdrop to our lives, a sort of tapestry I suppose.”

Greg Lake has long been considered a legendary voice and musical powerhouse whose impact changed the landscape of rock and roll. Many simply refer to him as “The Voice”. Visionary and creative, ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ provides an evocative, emotional ride into the life and music of one of the world’s most popular songwriters in a unique format which relies on audience involvement as well as the artistry of the performer. Says Greg, “This is not one of those boring shows sitting on a stool strumming folk songs, I purposely set out to make this show dynamic and entertaining with lots of drama and pathos, even some humour at times as well. Everyone feels part of the performance because we all bonded by the shared memories of our musical journeys together.” The recordings on the ‘Songs Of A Lifetime’ CD were taken from a selection of shows performed on the 2012 tour.

The CD release coincides with the upcoming release of Greg Lake’s autobiography, ‘Lucky Man’, and was inspired by it, but the two are not the same. The autobiography is NOT an audio recording of the show, but a narrative of Lake’s experiences from childhood to the present, including never before revealed details, funny and poignant moments, and colourful facts of his amazing career as one of the world’s leading and influential musicians, songwriters, vocalists and poets. The autobiography will be released both as an audio book read by the author and the complete print edition is anticipated at the end of the year. In support of the release plans for tours in Japan, Europe, South America, USA and Canada are currently in the works and will be announced shortly.

Hawkwind Legend Nik Turner To Perform Legendary ‘Space Ritual’ Album Live At The Echoplex In Los Angeles – March 10, 2013

Performances By Former Hawkwind Member Nik Turner, White Manna and Other Special Psychedelic Guests

Los Angeles, CA – Much to the anticipation of west coast Prog/Psych music fans, legendary Hawkwind member Nik Turner will be performing at the Echoplex in Los Angeles on March 10, 2013. Making this event even more historic, Nik Turner and his band will be performing Hawkind’s famed ‘Space Ritual’ album in its entirety live! Nik Turner was a founding member of Hawkwind during what has been considered their most commercially successful and critically acclaimed period for the band from 1970 to 1976. He wrote/co-wrote some of the group’s most popular songs such as “Brainstorm” and “Master Of The Universe”. Hawkwind’s 4th and possibly most popular album ‘The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London’ was recorded in 1972 (released in May 1973). Reaching #9 in the UK album charts and #179 in the Billboard Top 200, the double-record was recorded during the tour to promote the band’s ‘Doremi Fasol Latido’ (third) release. The Space Ritual show attempted to create a full audio-visual experience. The performances featured dancers, lightshow by Liquid Len and poetry recitations by Robert Calvert. Now Nik Turner brings the historic show to the US shores, recreating the magic once again!

“I’m really excited to bring Space Ritual back to America after all these years and to bring the excitement, madness and four-dimensional experience to the fans. The show will create the astrological sounds, colors, experimentations, dimensions and innovations from the original Space Ritual days of the early ’70s for today’s audiences.” – Nik Turner

Audiences can expect heavy space rock, jazzy science fictional fantasy, spiritual music to heal and raise spirits, consciousness and awareness, promoting communication and good times, getting high without drugs through the use of multimedia sounds/light/visual imagery to create extremely wild, wacky, mind boggling/blowing experience – each performance is truly a happening!

Nik Turner will be fronting the show on vocals, flute and sax, and will be joined by his backing band: Jurgen Engler, founder of German band Die Krupps on guitar, audiogenerator and synthesizer; Nicky Garrett, founder of the UK Subs, on guitar; and Geoff Miles, of the 1970’s punk band Chelsea, on bass. Eccentric, innovative and enigmatic, Nik Turner is full of surprises! Other artists to perform include White Manna and other special psychedelic guests!

All-Digital Release for Rideshare First Feature Film Shot Entirely On the iPhone

All-Digital Release for Rideshare
First Feature Film Shot Entirely On the iPhone

Studio City, CA – Lightyear Entertainment is proud to announce the release of the revolutionary ensemble comedy film, Rideshare.

On June 24, 2010, the filmmakers stood in line at an Apple store and were first in line to buy five of the new iPhone4’s on the first day they went on sale. Production began that day. In 2011, the film debuted at various film festivals, winning awards at three of them: The Audience Choice Award – Ventura Film Festival; Best Performance in an Experimental Film, Narisa Suzuki – Los Angeles New Wave Film Festival; and the Gold Kahuna Award – Honolulu Film Awards. The final version of the film was completed in late 2012.

Rideshare focuses on three complete strangers with nothing in common, driving a car from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., largely on the legendary Route 66. As they share this epic, heartfelt adventure, they help each other with the life crises that led each of them to take the journey.

Why shoot a film on iPhones? Director Donovan Cook explains: “I get this question a lot and the answer is simple – because the story required it. It is built into the concept that the film is shot by the characters using iPhones that they have been given specifically for this purpose. My intention is that the audience quickly forget that they are watching the first full-length feature film shot with a phone because they get so wrapped up in the characters and their story.”

In keeping with its new-tech creation, Rideshare will not be released on DVD. It will debut on Video on Demand, with some outlets such as Verizon and AT&T premiering it on February 10, 2013 and others (including Comcast, Time Warner, and Cox) on March 15, 2013. On April 2, 2013, it will debut on iTunes, Playstation, Xbox, Vudu and Amazon, through eOne Entertainment.

The film stars Narisa Suzuki (Ecstasy of Gold), Susan Isaacs (Plains, Trains and Automobiles, Parks and Recreation), and improv veteran Ryan Fox (Romantic Weirdos).

Purple Pyramid Records To Release Special Collector’s Re-issue Of Nektar’s Classic Sci-Fi Themed Psychedelic Masterpiece ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Eye’

Purple Pyramid Records To Release Special Collector’s Re-issue Of Nektar’s Classic Sci-Fi Themed Psychedelic Masterpiece ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Eye’

Los Angeles, CA – Space Rock fans rejoice! Purple Pyramid Records will be releasing a Special Collector’s Re-issue of ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Eye’, the classic 1971 debut album by UK progressive rock legends Nektar on February 26, 2013. This Sci-Fi themed masterpiece showcases a younger, spacier and more psychedelic Nektar. The CD will include the original album mix fully remastered, original liner notes by famed rock biographer Dave Thompson and a bonus CD featuring a vintage live performance of the entire album! This re-issue kicks off a series of Nektar catalog releases that will culminate with the release of a new studio album, ‘Time Machine’ coming this summer 2013.

Says guitarist/vocalist and founding member Roye Albrighton about ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Eye’, “Basically, it’s a journey to one’s inner-self, and to be able to see the world through your mind’s eye. Recorded in the early years of multi-track tape recording…this whole album was recorded on an 8-track recorder. We had to record each 20-minute piece complete and hope we didn’t make any mistakes… If we did, it was back to the beginning to start again.”

The Nektar story is a remarkable one. A British rock band that found stardom and major success in Germany and the USA, yet failed to make a significant breakthrough in their own country. With three gold albums under their belt (‘Remember The Future’, ‘Down To Earth’ and ‘Recycled’), Nektar produced some of the most original work of the seventies and eighties. In virtuoso guitarist Roye Albrighton Nektar had a charismatic front man who had shared a stage with Jimi Hendrix, in Allan “Taff” Freeman a unique keyboard player, in Derek “Mo” Moore a bass playing powerhouse and in Ron Howden a fluidity rarely found in a drummer. Fifth member Mick Brockett was not a musician, but was responsible for one of the most stunning light and visual shows ever to grace a rock stage. Nektar’s history appeared to have been written when they finally split in the eighties. Despite attempts to re-kindle the flame, the Nektar light, it seemed was out…until the year 2000. The new millenium saw the long awaited reunion tour of the classic line-up, to rave reviews and fantastic receptions. The light we thought was out, had in fact been kept aglow – by loyal fans across the globe!

An American tour in September 2004 saw Taff Freeman depart the band for personal reasons and his successor, Hammond virtuoso Tom Hughes, instantly earning a place in the hearts of the Nektar faithful. With continued concert dates, along with the remastering of the remainder of the Nektar back catalogue on CD, this legendary band has become once more a proud force to be reckoned with in the world of progressive music. In 2007 Nektar truly took over their own management, procured their official website as their own, became an entity entirely under their own control and went on a 22-date tour of Germany. The band released the critically acclaimed CDs ‘Book of Days’ in 2008 and the live DBL CD ‘Fortyfied’ in 2009. Signing with US label Cleopatra in 2011, the band competed it’s first U.S. Tour in seven years by virtue of a successful month-long jaunt of the States, to the delight of their U.S. Fans both old and new. The final Los Angeles date on this tour was captured on the Cleopatra Records 2012 DVD release ‘Space Rock Invasion’. In 2012, Nektar released ‘A Spoonful Of Time’ on Cleopatra Records; a psychedelic head trip through classic rock radio with artful twists on classics by The Doors, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Blind Faith, Steve Miller, 10cc and others. Nektar is set to make its mark once again with the release of their highly anticipated forthcoming studio album ‘Time Machine’ this summer!

As far as future plans for Nektar: “To make more music, and to experiment more in different ways,” says Albrighton. Nektar will be a part of the Cruise to the Edge cruise in March with the Yes, Tangerine Dream, Saga, Steve Hackett – Genesis Revisited, Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy, UK and others.

In conclusion Roye expounds about ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Eye’, “It’s a very unique album and stands alone in the Nektar archives. Many brand this as a ‘spacerock’ album…some a ‘Krautrock’ album…to us it is a Nektar album written and performed as we were in 1970.”

Prog-Folk Legend Judy Dyble Releases The Third Masterpiece Of Her Career In The USA,
A Mere 45 Years After The Last

Featuring Robert Fripp and Ian McDonald

London, UK – Judy Dyble’s career has seen her move on from being one of the original founding members of the legendary UK folk rock band Fairport Convention after the first and ‘rockiest’ album release to join with fellow London based musician, and later founding member of Foreigner, Ian McDonald. Advertising in Melody Maker with the simple words “Judy Dyble requires brilliant and creative bass guitarist/vocalist and lead guitarist/vocalist – Musicians Only” resulted in a collaboration with the musicians who collectively became King Crimson – Robert Fripp, Peter and Michael Giles. Judy moved on again and as the swinging ’60s shed its winter coat and the ’70s sprang into life she became one half of the stunning, if short lived duo Trader Home, whose eponymous (and only) long player ‘Morning Way’ was a huge critical success on both sides of the Atlantic, and is still feted all these years later, original vinyl copies fetching a small king’s ransom.

Judy promptly retired to the rolling English countryside to raise a family. The year 2008 saw a major milestone… With 40 years of songs and melodies in her head Judy was ready to record again! But as usual with one of the first ladies of the British scene, the traditional route was not the one she took. Enlisting friends and musicians, everything was recorded, and accumulated over the internet, from all four corners of the world.

And what a list of friends and musicians it was: including the first time Robert Fripp and Ian McDonald had played together since the abortive King Crimson tour of 1969. The collaborators added supremely to what became HMV’s specialist album of 2009 – ‘Talking With Strangers’.

Says Judy, “All the songs on ‘Talking With Strangers’ are snapshots of my daily life. Even the cover version of Greg Lake/Pete Sinfield’s ‘C’est La Vie’ has a resonance from my past to the future. The 19-minute ‘Harpsong’ is a condensed autobiography of my 45 year musical life, connecting musicians from my past, present and future and the life events which occurred along the way.”

“…a sophisticated triumph…” – Sid Smith, BBC

“…this lovely eight song set…the showstopper has to be the 19-minute autobiographical ‘Harpsong’ with an all-star line-up including Robert Fripp and Pat Mastelotto.” – Grant Moon, PROG Magazine

“It is superbly ambitious, ornate and atmospheric” – The Mail On Sunday

A commercial, critical and artistic success, one of the greatest comebacks of the century, saw superb reaction in the UK, mainland Europe and Scandinavia, and now for the first time, Judy Dyble’s ‘Talking With Strangers’ is released in the USA! ‘Talking With Strangers’ was co-written by Judy with Tim Bowness and Alistair Murphy and engineered and produced by Alistair Murphy and Tim Bowness.

In closing Judy has this to impart to her fans and listeners, “This album, ‘Talking With Strangers’ blossomed from casual internet conversations with people I had then never met in reality into something of which I am very, very proud. My hope is that people who listen to it will find something within it that will resonate within their own lives. And will make them smile.”

Classic Rock Legends Wishbone Ash Set 2013 North America Spring Tour

Classic Rock Legends Wishbone Ash Set 2013 North America Spring Tour

Danbury, CT – Wishbone Ash, one of the most influential guitar bands in the history of rock, kicks off the North American leg of their 2013 tour on February 28. The group returns to these shores following a successful spring tour last year to celebrate the release of their highly acclaimed studio album, ‘Elegant Stealth’, and on the heels of the ‘RoadWorks 3’ release, a collection of live performances.

During the Elegant Stealth Tour of 2012, Wishbone Ash played to full houses in the Northeast and Midwest. The upcoming North American Tour features many familiar venues plus several new stops, including dates on the West Coast and in Canada.

Released in November 2011 by ZYX Music, ‘Elegant Stealth’ represents a benchmark in the evolution of Wishbone Ash. Signature twin-lead melodies and a powerhouse rhythm section frame 11 new tracks that reflect a diverse realm of styles and moods.

Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash has more than 20 original studio recordings and several live albums to their credit. On Elegant Stealth, the group coalesces around strong songwriting and serious chops. Founding member Andy Powell handles lead vocals and trades licks with Finland’s guitar wizard Muddy Manninen. Bassist Bob Skeat, a 15-year veteran of the band and in-demand studio musician, sets the pace with Joe Crabtree, one of the best of Britain’s new breed of drummers, having played with Pendragon and David Cross of King Crimson. The band demonstrates its versatility on ‘Elegant Stealth’, from the pop/rocker “Reason to Believe” to the gentler vibe of “Give it Up” to tunes like “Warm Tears” and “Big Issues,” where the band gets to stretch out and flex its musical muscles.

Classic Rock Revisited’s Jeb Wright called ‘Elegant Stealth’ “one of the best albums in Wishbone Ash’s 42 year career.”

Keith “MuzikMan” Hannaleck of MuzikReviews.com said, “This band is like a fine wine that just keeps getting better with age and this is one of their strongest studio releases in years.”

“The songs are catchy, very technical, but there is a soul in what Wishbone Ash is doing!” said Mark Kadzielawa of 69 Faces of Rock.

Citing Wishbone Ash as an influence on their style, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Southern Rock outfits like Lynyrd Skynyrd and, more recently, heavyweights like Opeth and some of the guitar- based Indie/Alternative bands, have all taken a little something from the legendary twin-guitar approach of Wishbone Ash. Truly, there is no other rock band on the planet that has done more with the twin guitar concept than the Ash.

Drummer Mark Murdock Releases New Prog CD ‘Cymbalic Encounters’ Featuring Brand X’s John Goodsall, Percy Jones, Kenwood Dennard And Other Guest Artists David Sancious and Spock’s Beard’s Ryo Okumotu

Tokyo, Japan – Prog fans worldwide are buzzing with excitement over the new CD release by drummer/songwriter/producer Mark Murdock titled ‘Cymbalic Encounters’. Says Mark, “The concept of ‘Cymbalic Encounters’ represents the ‘Encountering of Symbolic Musicians’ as my greatest success in music has been keeping company with great musicians.”

“Mark Murdock’s ‘Cymbalic Encounters’ fulfills a longtime elusive goal. I tried to feature more the inherent UK prog (progressive rock) element of the fusion band, Brand X – with little success. Mr. Murdock seems to have achieved this combination with remarkable ease.” – John Goodsall

The cymbal in ‘Cymbalic’ symbolizes meeting up with another drummer. “When I was 15, I broke my snare drum head and went into a music store in Phoenix, my hometown, where I was approached by this hippie looking guy with a Liverpool accent, who inquired into the local music scene and identified himself as a drum roadie for a touring band from England and invited me to that evening’s concert to meet the drummer and band he was working for. He presented me with backstage passes and tickets.” There Mark was introduced to the drummer of the band, a guy named Phil Collins with the band Genesis. “To make a long story short, Phil was keen on American drummers and so we engaged in drummers’ talk. I instantly loved Phil’s drumming. I met him on every tour that Genesis made to the states and eventually made it over to the UK, just in time to hear Brand X in rehearsal at Islands Studios in Hammersmith, London, where I was introduced to the other members. They were preparing to record their first record. But I thought they were just jamming, so I used to jump on a percussion rig there and jam along. Not realizing what I was jamming to was the material for ‘Unorthodox Behaviour’. I also went to their very first gigs at the London School Of Economics and The Marquee Club via Phil. He also used to allow me into Trident Recording Studios where Genesis was recording ‘A Trick Of The Tail’. There might have been a hidden motive to this as I was sometimes recruited as the unpaid official Brand X ‘Fish And Chips boy’ and babysitter for Phil. But in return I used to listen to his personal tapes of the ‘Lamb’ tours and play his red upright piano with a green painting on the purple walls. It was really an ugly site!” laughs Mark. “At any rate, it made a great musical impression on my life – not the interior design, but the music, the creative element, the energy.”

“Rated as ‘8’ out of the ‘Best 10 CDs in 2012’! Mark Murdock – ‘Cymbalic Encounters’: Murdock surrounds himself with a group of outstanding players, delivering one of the best solo albums by a drummer that I have heard in a LONG time. Includes the smooth bass sounds of Percy Jones…the always in the right groove playing of John Goodsall – ‘THE CLOSEST THING’ to a new Brand X album that you’ll come close to, with a twist.” – Gary Brown, American Corespondent for Classic Rock Radio Dot EU

Mark Murdock started playing drums at a young age in Phoenix, Arizona. He played in a local jazz-rock band ‘Seacloud’ gaining local recognition and featured on Phoenix radio KDKB sponsored album. Mark’s British connections eventually led him to Peter Banks, original guitarist with YES, who he teamed up with in Peter Banks EMPIRE in Los Angeles where he showcased in Empire and recorded a demo which later was released on CD as ‘Empire Mark III’ on One Way Records. Mark was also mentioned in the Peter Banks biography (co-written by Billy James) ‘Beyond And Before’.

And just how did Mark bring Percy Jones and David Sancious together on the bonus track (song 14) “Waters From Marsh Harbour”?

Mark explains, “In terms of Percy, I have been in touch with him probably the longest out of anyone from Brand X. I moved to New York from Phoenix, only to find that Percy had moved there, as well. So, I just happened to have had the opportunity to write and record three tracks with David Sancious, who I met in Phoenix before moving east. David was touring with Jack Bruce (Cream) and Billy Cobham was their drummer, who had broken his TAMA Octobans stand. The owner of the club called me, knowing I was the only guy in Arizona who possessed one, so I hooked Billy up with my stand and got free tickets and a chance to hang with the band. I played David my recent recording that I had made with keyboardist Allan Zavod (Jean-Luc Ponty, Zappa). I assume David liked what he heard…he suggested that if I was ever on the east coast to look him up, which is exactly what I did shortly afterwards. I spent a few days at David’s house writing a three song demo which we later recorded. David’s playing is so profound! I quickly invited Percy to record bass on our tracks at Unique Studios in NYC. Brand X was actually scheduled for a 2012 tour with David Sancious, but it fell through. As a result I decided to add the track to ‘Cymbalic Encounters’ to show that they in fact joined forces below. Percy has supported me on numerous projects including ‘Eyes Down’ with songwriting, recording and playing live gigs. The ‘Eyes Down’ CD features guest appearances by violinist Shankar (Peter Gabriel, Frank Zappa, Shakti) percussionist Mino Cinelu (Miles Davis, Weather Report) and drummer/vocalist Tony ‘Thunder’ Smith (John Mclaughlin, Lou Reed) Percy is a ‘one of a kind’ bassist. He never plays inside the music, but plays outside just enough to keep within musical constraints in a mysterious way. I have always admired his musical sense.”

“I met up with John Goodsall after not seeing him since the early Brand X days in London, in 1997 in Tokyo, where I currently reside. John is amazing in the way he understands Percy’s playing and visa versus. But more than that, John’s chording, melodies and leads are like no other in my book!!! What he contributed to the tracks was so magical! I was also a big fan of Atomic Rooster which was his previous band before Brand X.”

Former Brand X/Pat Martino drummer Kenwood Dennard who played in Phil Collins absence of Brand X, due to Genesis commitments, also plays electronic drums on the track ‘Unauthorized Recording’. Says Mark, “I had this grand idea of inviting some of the previous Brand X members on board; Robin Lumley and Mike Clark, who had agreed but were swept away with overloaded projects. I later realized I actually had a track of Kenwood playing my old electronic kit at a Tokyo gig that we played together from some years back. I was able to re-trigger the drum sounds and use them on the track. It may be the first time those guys have been on record together since the Brand X ‘Livestock’ album!”

“Murdock’s ‘Cymbalic Encounter’ is a must hear CD!! Accompanied with Percy Jones, and John Goodsall they made one of the best prog – funk – jazz fusion – adult pop recordings that I heard in ages. Highly recommended!” – Gary Brown – American Corespondent for Classic Rock Radio Dot EU

Under the microscope, there are eight instrumental tracks and six vocal tracks that Mark is featured on vocals. Instrumental tracks like “Goodsall Funk Railroad/Ballad Of Percy Jones” which gets its name from Grand Funk Railroad and the kid’s animation ‘Thomas’ is very reminiscent of early Brand X with its tight funk groove and soulful guitar melodies. The track “Cymbalic Encounters” has a mellow atmosphere with John Goodsall’s signature sound. Vocal songs like ‘Artificial Society’ which has a pop element of catchy hooks to it, which Mark lyrically describes living in Japan – from a foreigner’s view point. “The Manufacturers” is a song about China’s manufacturing machine. Mark sings “We are the manufacturers – for better or for worse.” Also featured is Spock’s Beard keyboardist, Ryo Okumoto, who is no stranger to prog audiences worldwide. Ryo plays some mean MOOG synth on the track “Kaiten Zushi.” And guest guitarist, Joe Berger who offers some bluesy/soulful lead guitar on several or more tracks and also mixed and mastered the CD at BEAM AUDIO, NYC. A few of Mark’s long time friends, Dave Juteau and Ken Hall helped cover a needed few spots, which Mark is pleased with their contribution.

What does Mark have as a follow-up to this CD? “I am currently working on a follow-up CD with some of the tracks that didn’t make this CD, also batch of new songs featuring Percy and John with hopefully some new featured artists – kind of like Ringo’s All Stars Band,” laughs Mark. “Plus, I plan to release a few other side projects in 2013 as well.”

In closing Mark has this to impart to his listeners, “Percy and John really dedicated their talented writing skills and playing to support this CD. I feel honored to have them as the ‘Featured Guests’ on ‘Cymbalic Encounters’.”

Jazz Legends MICHAEL WOLFF and MIKE CLARK To Release ‘WOLFF & CLARK EXPEDITION’ Debut CD
Available February 19 on RANDOM ACT RECORDS

New York, NY – When two of the best musicians on the planet decide to combine their estimable talents to create a band without boundaries, the result is the WOLFF & CLARK EXPEDITION. Dizzy Gillespie famously said that jazz must have “one foot in the past and one in the future.” With the Wolff & Clark Expedition, the music embraces the past, ventures into the future, but remains rooted in the improvisatory present. After several high profile performances in 2012, jazz legends Michael Wolff and Mike Clark, the Wolff & Clark Expedition, are preparing to release their self-titled debut album in February 2013. Performing with creative bassist Chip Jackson, the Expedition’s initial outing aims for uncharted, compelling musical territories while still entertaining a wide audience of astute listeners.

From The Beatles to Zawinul, Wolff & Clark navigate a disparate set of beguiling material. They commune with “Come Together,” determine “What Is This Thing Called Love,” before showing no “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” Wolff’s beautiful composition in 7/4, “ARP,” precedes a burning “Flat Out,” rout. By the time Horace Silver’s “Song For My Father” is proffered, listeners will realize this is not their fathers’ jazz trio. This is something very new, quite different…This is exciting, sublime but accessible music.

The sizzling “Is There A Jackson…?” leads to Wolff’s soulful intro to Brother Nat’s “Hummin’.” After church, the trio tears up Gamble and Huff’s “For The Love Of Money” before winding down with the gorgeous ballad “Elise,” Michael’s homage to his late Mom.

Expedition: A journey undertaken by a group of people with a definite objective; or the group undertaking such a journey. So it is with the fearless, tuneful negotiations of the Wolff and Clark Expedition. Although the name may recall other explorers from another era, Wolff and Clark are thoroughly modern: They blaze musical trails, fresh and fertile, with sounds not previously heard.

Says Wolff & Clark, “We have been playing together for many years – We share the same vision, energy and excitement for jazz music, for improvisation. The musical goal of The Expedition is to utilize well-known tunes in addition to intriguing originals and to deconstruct them, then reconstruct them as vehicles for self-expression. We believe it is time to bring modern sensibilities and styles of playing (and writing) to music that comes from the Blues and the roots of Jazz to create fresh rhythmic and harmonic/melodic adventures.”

“The Wolff & Clark Expedition is what happens when great musicians come together and mean business, but sound like they’re having fun doing it!” – Vinnie Colaiuta

Performing together since the 1970’s, both Wolff and Clark have each had stellar music careers. Michael Wolff is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and bandleader, and is best known for his melodically fresh and rhythmically compelling piano style. Wolff made his recording debut in 1972 with Cal Tjader, and went on to record with Cannonball Adderley, Nancy Wilson, Sonny Rollins, Tony Williams, Christian McBride and many others. As pianist and music director for jazz singer Nancy Wilson, Michael wrote orchestral arrangements and conducted more than twenty-five major symphony orchestras worldwide. From 1989 to 1994, Michael served as the bandleader for the Aresenio Hall Show, which heightened his visibility and gave him the opportunity to perform with many established artists such as Ray Charles, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and saxophonist/President Bill Clinton. Michael Wolff has released twelve critically acclaimed solo albums as a leader, ‘Joe’s Strut’ being the most recent. He was a recipient of the BMI Music Award for television composition and was also the winner of the Gold Disk Award in Japan for piano. On Feb 23, 2012 Michael performed a solo piano concert at the University of Toledo, in Toledo, Ohio, as part of their Art Tatum solo piano concert.

Drummer Mike Clark is a true percussion legend – Mike Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk players while touring and recording with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970’s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s ‘Thrust’ album, which garnered him an international cult following. While often referred to as the “Tony Williams of funk,” Mike, a JAZZ musician, has, in fact, become one of the most vital to ever sit behind a set. He has performed with jazz greats Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Bennett, Bobby Hutcherson, Christian McBride, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Wallace Roney, Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton, Fred Wesley, Vince Guaraldi, Chet Baker, Larry Coryell, Eddie Henderson, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, Chris Potter, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Oscar Brown Jr., Lenny White (Mike has a two-drummer band with Lenny called “New Brew”), Mose Allison, Gil Evans and his Orchestra and many more luminaries. Mike is currently finishing his forthcoming solo CD ‘Indigo Blue’, which features Randy Brecker, Christian McBride, Donald Harrison, Rob Dixon and Antonio Farao.

Says Wolff & Clark, “Together, we have years of combined experience playing with many of the greatest jazz artists of all time, so we share an innate understanding as to how to play at a consistently very high level, with a mutual feel for improvised music. Since we both spent time in the Bay Area, and since we’ve been friends and band mates for many years, The Expedition is a natural result of our shared, cumulative experiences.”

“It’s a joy to hear musicians with so much experience approach the music with such great passion.” – Fred Hersch

Together they bring a combination of swing and groove to a unique deconstructive take on classic jazz, popular standards, and original compositions that creates a freedom in the sound to electrify listeners and audiences worldwide. With their collective vast experience, Wolff and Clark can play with anyone, anywhere, always defying boundaries of genre, mingling and mixing with a kaleidoscope of changing players, keeping the music interesting and dynamic. As such, they are excited to present their VIP (Very Impressive Players) List: Dependent upon the gig, they invite one or several musicians from a roster of colleagues to join them – Jeff Berlin, Larry Coryell, Steve Wilson, James Genus, Christian McBride, Donald Harrison, Randy Brecker, Wallace Roney, Tom Harrell, Alex Foster, Lenny Pickett, Seamus Blake and others constitute explorers willing to join the Expedition’s adventures.

Wolff & Clark states, “We strive to take all listeners on unparalleled musical journeys, to unexplored sonic realms. W&C adheres to past musical traditions while pushing the envelope further into the future. We hope to bring great improvised music to as many intrepid listeners as possible; we know that Jazz can be highly entertaining! So hold on tight and join the Expedition…!”

On this expedition, the possibilities are limitless.
