Los Angeles, CA – Florida-based Psych-Space rockers, Sons Of Hippies, take flight on the backs of mythical, winged beasts to bring you Griffons At The Gates Of Heaven, the band’s newest and most ambitious recording to date, available July 16 on Cleopatra Records. Mixed by legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, L7) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios, the album fearlessly synthesizes four decades of rock with heavily echoed, neo-Surf guitar, sinister mellotron and crunching power chords. “Rose,” the album’s second single, has achieved extensive support at radio, debuting on KROQ’s “Rodney On The ROQ” program earlier this month as well as landing on CMJ’s Top 200 chart. Simultaneously, the band has been touring across the eastern states, including several special engagements with UK prog legends Nektar.

Conceived by the spiritual union of guitarist/vocalist Katherine Kelly and drummer Jonas Canales amidst the good vibes of the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Sons Of Hippies began their journey in 2008, adding bassist David Daly to the fold in 2011. Together the trio conquered the Florida music scene, earning accolades from audiences and critics alike including honors from their local alternative weekly Creative Loafing. True to their name, the band struggles to maintain the hopeful humanism of their ‘60s forebears while living in today’s alienating post-modern society. “I have always been drawn to ideas of perception versus reality,” says Katherine, “Humans live to tell stories to each other. But what happens in translation is often such a mutation of the truth that we become ideas of ourselves instead of just ourselves. I want our music to remind people to come back to themselves.”

But the band isn’t all ponderous philosophy – the first official video promoting Griffons, “Spaceship Ride,” is a musical peyote trip back to child-like innocence, while the video for “Rose” cheekily sends-up ‘70s exploitation flicks with the band themselves cast as the surprised victims of 3 blood-lusty females. As UK magazine Vive Le Rock enthused in their review of Griffons “Psychedelia just got sexy.”

Phoenix, AZ – Guitar legend Steve Hunter, best known for his work with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, David Lee Roth, Jack Bruce and Aerosmith, has a new CD released, ‘The Manhattan Blues Project’, featuring an all-star guest line-up! This is Steve’s fifth solo album and is a culmination of his love of the Blues and New York City mixed with his love of melody and “Tone Poems”. After recording and touring with Alice Cooper in 2011, he decided to get off the road to write and record. He thought it would be cool to have some guest players join him and was overjoyed and humbled at the willingness of those he asked to contribute to this project. Many of the guests he had not worked with before and most had a very different style of playing to himself. There are two cover tunes but this album is mainly new material written, played and produced by Steve. He was very happy to also include a short composition by his friend Jason Becker, called “Daydream By The Hudson”.

Drum Legend Billy Cobham Launches Previously Unreleased 1997 Live Album ‘Compass Point’

Los Angeles, CA – In 1997, legendary jazz/fusion drummer Billy Cobham flew to New Providence in the Bahamas for a series of performances at the world famous Compass Point Hotel. Joined by his stellar jazz quartet including guitarist Carl Orr, keyboardist Gary Husband, and bassist Stefan Rademacher, the group recorded a set of all new compositions and improvisations. However, plagued by a series of troublesome events, the recordings remained on the shelf unheard by the general public – until now! The 2-CD set, entitled ‘Compass Point’, was released June 18 on Purple Pyramid Records.

Though the tropical setting proved idyllic, the hurdles the band had to overcome in making these recordings a reality were formidable. Storms hovered on the horizon threatening to overtake them, the stage that placed the band over the resort pools had yet to be built mere hours from showtime, and the only piano tuner in town had that very day quit the business because he had just won the lottery! Despite these setbacks, the band played magnificently, laying down an accomplished set of jazz/fusion pieces that run from the energetic yet haunting “Fragolino” to the smooth shuffle of “Les Cocos.”

Billy Cobham reflects, “All in all, the experience was genuinely a positive one and will live forever in my memories as one of the milestones in my musical career.”

And what an amazing career Billy Cobham has had. From his auspicious start in the late ‘60s touring and recording with the great Miles Davis to his groundbreaking work with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early ‘70s, Cobham built a reputation for complex and soulful drumming. But it wasn’t until 1973 and the release of his first solo album ‘Spectrum’ that he took the title of jazz fusion’s preeminent drummer with a style and technique all his own, one that has been a major influence on drummers worldwide ever since.

Judy’s past career has been eclectic. From being one of the original founding members of the extraordinary UK folk/rock band Fairport Convention, after the first and rockiest of their albums, she left to join with fellow London based musician, and later founder member of Foreigner, Ian McDonald.

Advertising in Melody Maker with the simple words “Judy Dyble requires brilliant and creative bass guitarist/vocalist and lead guitarist vocalist. Musicians only” resulted in a collaboration with the musicians who later collectively became King Crimson – Robert Fripp, Peter and Mike Giles.

Judy however moved on again after recording a few songs with them which later surfaced as ‘The Brondesbury Tapes’ and she became one half of the stunning, if short lived duo Trader Horne, whose eponymous (and only) long player ‘Morning Way’ is still considered to be a classic of its day.

After a short, but jolly collaboration with Lol Coxhill and Canterbury musicians Steve and Phil Miller as DC & the MBs, Judy promptly retired to the rolling English countryside to raise a family, until 30 years later she returned to music to create new music in a way that hadn’t even been dreamed of in 1970. The internet had arrived in the intervening years and with it the ability to record remotely and seamlessly weave contributions from everywhere into a beautiful tapestry of songs. Thus ‘Talking With Strangers’ was born in 2009 and now ‘Flow and Change’ is released in 2013 on Gonzo Multimedia.

London, UK – Steve Hillage is widely considered a guitar innovator, and is associated with the Canterbury scene, working in experimental domains since the late 1960s. Besides his critically acclaimed solo recordings, along with Gong, Steve has been a member of the ensembles Khan and System 7. Much to the excitement of his fans worldwide, Gonzo MultiMedia UK has released ‘Steve Hillage – Live In England 1979’ on a CD/DVD set!

Says Steve, “This was a great performance from another fine period of my band in the late ’70s with John McKenzie on bass and Andy Anderson on drums.”

Steve Hillage first came to prominence as a member of the multi-national rock band Gong. Steve appeared on successful albums such as ‘Angels Egg’, ‘You’ and his final album with the band ‘Shamal’. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled ‘Fish Rising’. This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however, Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System 7.

In 1976 Steve recorded the album ‘L’, which was produced by Todd Rundgren. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the first Steve Hillage Band, which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976.

From 1976 to 1979, Steve Hillage released several critically acclaimed albums and toured the world. Following the live debut of a new line-up, the Steve Hillage Band toured extensively throughout 1979. This CD/DVD set captures a stunning performance by this great line-up of the band! Playing with Steve are the ever-present Miquette Giraudy (synthesiser, vocals), John McKenzie (Bass, Vocals), Andy Anderson (Drums) and Dave Stewart (2nd Guitar). This is the line-up that recorded some of the live tracks and the studio side of Steve’s 1979 release Live Herald. The studio tracks from ‘Live Herald’ eventually came out on CD as part of the album ‘Open’.

The track listing to this historic 1979 performance from the Steve Hillage Band includes: “Salmon Song”, “Unzipping the Zype”, “Hurdy Gurdy Man”, “1988 Aktivator”, “Unidentified Flying Being”, and “It`s All Too Much”.

Bonus tracks on the CD include “Hurdy Gurdy Glissando” (live 1977) and “Electrick Gypsies” (live 1977), recorded with the ‘L’ tour line-up.

Bonus material on the DVD includes two short promo videos for “Radio” and “Light in the Sky” (from the album ‘Motivation Radio’) and a more recent in-depth interview with Steve and Miquette.

Steve currently sees his System 7, Mirror System, and Steve Hillage Band entities as operating in parallel and has been writing some new rock-based material for a possible Steve Hillage Band album for release in 2014/15. Sons Of Hippies was conceived high in the mountains of Tennessee amid fellow music lovers at a festival on a 700-acre farm. Their name originated when Brazilian native Jonas Canales and Florida-bred Katherine Kelly probed familial bonds to discover they were, indeed, children of hippy parents. The duo’s dreamy, melodic but complexly synthesized music struck a chord with audiences and earned the band a critic’s choice award from Tampa’s popular Creative Loafing magazine for “Best Modern-Sounding Record” in 2009. Bassist David Daly joined the group in 2011 and in December of the following year, the band signed with Cleopatra Records. The resulting album is the group’s strongest and most ambitious set of recordings to date, and earned these young upstarts a spot on a summer tour with two giants of classic and progressive rock.

This time around the ensemble will be performing the ONE SIZE FITS ALL album in its entirety, along with other MOI/FRANK ZAPPA favorites from BONGO FURY, OVERNITE SENSATION, ROXY & ELSEWHERE, UNCLE MEAT and WERE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY!

Says Napoleon, “If you liked last year’s tours of us performing the entire ‘Roxy & Elsewhere’ album, you will really have fun this tour, because we are doing ‘One Size Fits All’ in its entirety! (Which includes both German and English versions of “Sofa”) The difference between the GrandMothers Of Invention performing last year’s ‘Roxy’, and this year’s ‘One Size Fits All’, is that the original lead singer for both albums is the same lead singer performing these songs live on stage. This is NOT a tribute band! The GrandMothers Of Invention is the ONLY band currently playing the music of Frank Zappa with two of the original members of the Mothers Of Invention. Says Don, “This tour will be quite an adventure as we will be performing the entire ‘One Size Fits All’ CD. ‘Inca Roads’ is one of Zappa’s best efforts in music writing along with the other songs on that CD, and the band is ready. This band is the tightest ever! Of course that includes the songs that Napoleon recorded with Zappa like ‘Andy’, ‘Florentine Pogan’ and ‘Sofa #2’. Of course I will have some surprises that are just too weird to reveal here.”

The GrandMothers of Invention are the only Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention alumni who have been consistently performing the music of the maestro since 2003. From the classic ‘Freak Out’, ‘Absolutely Free’, ‘We’re Only In It For The Money’, ‘Uncle Meat’, and ‘Burnt Weeny Sandwich’ and ‘Weasels Ripped My Flesh’, to ‘Apostrophe’, ‘The Grand Wazoo’, ‘Overnite Sensation’, ‘Roxy & Elsewhere’, ‘Bongo Fury’ and ‘One Size Fits All’ – they have performed on a very long list of classic Frank Zappa & the Mother’s of Invention’s albums, movies and other projects.

Nevada City, CA – Ray Manzarek and Roy Rogers have received no shortage of kudos since they first recorded together five years ago. Ray Manzarek’s signature keyboard sound was a cornerstone of The Doors – one of the most iconic rock bands of the 60’s. An inductee into the R&R Hall of Fame – he certainly needs no introduction. In the pantheon of music, The Doors’ music continues to be one of the most revered rock song catalogs of any band. Slide guitarist Roy Rogers has been lauded not only for his own recordings but for his long-time collaboration with harmonica master Norton Buffalo as well as his producing of 4 CD projects for blues icon John Lee Hooker and folk legend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. He is well known worldwide for his mastery of slide guitar and has received 8 Grammy nominations for his work as artist and producer.

In 2011 Manzarek-Rogers released ‘Translucent Blues’- a blues-rock collection of songs tinged with poetry and literary references. The project reached #1 on the Americana Roots chart and debuted at #6 on the Billboard blues chart. The lyrical contributions came from such diverse co-writers as Jim Carroll, Warren Zevon and poet Michael McClure, among others. ‘Twisted Tales’ draws from some of those same writers to tell very different stories. Featured musicians are Kevin Hayes on drums, formerly with the Robert Cray Band; Steve Evans on bass who has performed with the Elvin Bishop Band; and George Brooks on saxophones, who has performed with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain.

The new release is a collaboration of keyboard and guitar sounds that merge with stories, images and art. These two amazing musicians create an intoxicating; plush sound that is – more than unique. Manzarek and Rogers are seemingly an odd pairing – but their new recording unleashes a stunning musical landscape for the listener – this music will ‘take you for a ride’… There is a full-length documentary film to be released examining their unique collaboration and friendship in depth this fall.
