New Documentary ‘Vangelis And The Journey To Ithaka’ To Be Released On DVD
September 23, 2013

London, UK – Much to the excitement of music fans worldwide, the new feature length documentary on Greek music legend Vangelis titled ‘Vangelis And The Journey To Ithaka’ will be released on September 23, 2013 by Gonzo MultiMedia UK. The two-hour documentary includes interviews with Vangelis and many of his friends and colleagues, including Sean Connery, Hugh Hudson, Jessye Norman, Oliver Stone, Akiko Ebi, Julian Rachlin and many others. It also includes rare, historical footage, most of which has never been seen before. Another highlight includes recent footage of Vangelis improvising new music!

Vangelis, a composer of electronic, ambient, jazz, pop/rock and orchestral music, is best known for his Academy Award winning score for the film ‘Chariots Of Fire’, and composing scores for the films ‘Antarctica’, ‘Blade Runner’, ‘1492: Conquest Of Paradise’ and ‘Alexander’, as well as the use of his music in the PBS documentary ‘Cosmos: A Personal Voyage’ by Carl Sagan. Vangelis began his professional music career working with several popular Greek bands in the 1960’s, such as The Forminx and most notably Aphrodite’s Child. Throughout the 1970’s Vangelis composed music scores for several animal documentaries; the success of these scores brought him into the film scoring mainstream.

In the early 1980’s, Vangelis teamed up with YES vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson. The duo recorded a series of successful and critically acclaimed albums under the name Jon & Vangelis. In 1981 Vangelis composed the score for the Oscar-winning film ‘Chariots Of Fire’, which won him an Academy Award for Best Original Music Score. The soundtrack’s single “Theme From Chariots Of Fire” reached the top of the American Billboard Hot 100 chart and was most recently used as theme music at the London 2012 Olympics.

In a career spanning over 50 years, writing and composing over 50 albums, Vangelis is regarded as one of the greatest composers of electronic music of all time. And now, the new documentary ‘Vangelis And The Journey To Ithaka’ celebrates the music legend’s illustrious and fascinating career!

London’s Royal Philharmonic Scores Fleetwood Mac’s Classic Album Rumours With Guest Appearance By Peter Frampton

London’s Royal Philharmonic Scores Fleetwood Mac’s Classic Album Rumours
With Guest Appearance By Peter Frampton

Los Angeles, CA – One of the world’s most storied and esteemed orchestras, The Royal Philharmonic, continues its bold, symphonic reinterpretations of contemporary rock music, this time revisiting the ‘70s melodic rock favorite Rumours by Fleetwood Mac in its entirety. Recorded at the historic Abbey Road studios, this release marks the first time the RPO have taken on an entire album, from opening note to closing refrain. The roughly 50+ musicians who comprise the orchestra were aided in their quest by the guiding hands of arrangers James Graydon and Richard Cottle as well as very special guest appearances by the legendary Peter Frampton and steel guitarist Sarah Jory!

The RPO couldn’t have selected a better album to recreate. Released in 1977 and considered the high water mark not only of Fleetwood Mac’s extraordinary career but of ‘70s rock in general, Rumours produced a string of hits including “Go Your Own Way,” “Don’t Stop,” “The Chain,” and “Gold Dust Woman.” Graydon comments, “Rumours was such an important album in terms of both songwriting and production. Although we were mindful of the fact that these songs are very well known, we decided to approach the arrangements from a slightly different perspective to make it work in the orchestral world.” Executive producer Anthony Klein remarks, “It was a privilege to work with the Royal Philharmonic, and to have them play and record those classic songs in such an iconic room as Studio 2 at Abbey Road made the whole project even more epic. We now have a fantastic album and hope that it will appeal to all generations.”

Experience this classic album like you’ve never experienced it before!

Curved Air Legend and Virtuoso Violinist Darryl Way Releases First Solo Album In 20 Years!

Darryl Way Ultra Violins CD cover

Curved Air Legend and Virtuoso Violinist Darryl Way Releases First Solo Album In 20 Years!

London, UK – Much to the anticipation of music fans and critics worldwide, Curved Air founding member and virtuoso violinist Darryl Way is releasing his first solo album in 20 years! Now available on Explore Multimedia, via Cherry Red Records, ‘Ultra Violins’ features Darryl’s own interpretations of several well-known classical pieces, as well as a re-recording of Curved Air’s classic hit “Vivaldi”. Says Darryl, “The motivating force behind creating ‘Ultra Violins’ was to introduce some new material for solo violin that came from the vocal repertoire and the world of orchestral music, rather than music specifically for solo violin.”

Originally formed in 1969, Curved Air was a groundbreaking progressive art-rock band renowned for their showmanship. Each member pushed the boundaries of possibilities for rock music performance. Darryl Way with his flamboyant virtuoso exploration of electric violin, Francis Monkman with his brilliant innovative sound manipulation using the VCS3 synthesiser, keyboards and fiery intricate guitar playing. and Florian’s expressive approach to rock drumming. Vocalist Sonja Kristina won the hearts of a generation of music lovers and was voted top British Female Vocalist of the 70’s whilst the three top twenty albums that this lineup released are regarded as classics. Darryl wrote the music for the Top 10 hit (reached #4) “Back Street Luv” and was a major contributor to the 3 albums that made the Top 20. With Curved Air he toured extensively, performing in practically every major city in both America and Europe. Before becoming headliners themselves, Curved Air toured with Black Sabbath in the UK and in the USA they toured with Deep Purple, Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. They also appeared on the same bill as The Doors, Steppenwolf, B.B. King, Johnny Winter and Dr. John.

After Curved Air Darryl went on to release several critically acclaimed solo albums in both ‘rock’ and ‘classical’ genres. Among these, was his ‘Concerto For Electric Violin’, which was premiered on the South Bank Show with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and himself as soloist. Darryl’s collaborations include working with Sir Tim Rice, Sting and Gary Brooker (Procol Harum). In classical genres he has orchestrated Stewart Copeland’s ballet “King Lear” for the San Francisco Ballet, and Stewart’s opera “The Holy Blood and Crescent Moon”, premiered by the Cleveland Opera in the US. In 1996, Darryl’s own opera “The Master and Margarita” was premiered at The Place Theatre in London. Alongside these projects, Darryl has also worked as a film and television composer.

As a violinist, Darryl has lead the London-based Electric Symphony Orchestra for concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, and lead and recorded with The Elektra Ensemble, performing classical and contemporary music. As a session musician, he has recorded with Jethro Tull, Sky and Marrianne Faithful, as well as several film scores with the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent work includes being musical director for the soprano Emma Shapplin, for a series of televised UNHCR concerts at the Parthenon in Athens. Recent compositions include a Symphonic Choral work entitled “Siren’s Rock”, premiered at the Plymouth Guildhall with the South West Sinfonietta, Opera South West, Naomi Harvey (WNO) soprano and Stephen Crook, tenor. Recent projects include writing and producing two albums and DVDs (in 5.1 Surround Sound) for a classical crossover project entitled Verisma. For this project he directed and produced four videos, which have been broadcast on Classic FM TV.

During his illustrious career, Darryl has created and been a major part of over 20 commercially released albums. And now, after 20 years, his highly anticipated new solo album ‘Ultra Violins’ is now available! Along with his stunning adaptations of orchestral pieces such as “Scheherezade” and “Farandole”, is a new composition by Darryl titled “Tarrantelle”; a piece inspired by a performance by Maxim Vengerov, the Russian violinist. Also included on this album is Darryl’s video for “Farondole”. He explains, “Ever since 2002 I’ve been making videos for various projects, including my classical crossover band Verisma, which features the magnificent tenor voice of my co-collaborator, Stephen Crook. We were lucky enough to get our first video broadcast on Classic FM TV, and from then on we had a further four videos broadcast on this TV channel. So to promote the digital release of ‘Ultra Violins’ I decided to make a video of it.”

Of the the new version of ‘Vivaldi’ included on the album, says Darryl, “It is a piece in two halves, as was the original Curved Air show stopper. The first half has been arranged in typically baroque style, or in the style of Vivaldi himself if you like. After a short transition passage the piece arrives in the 20th century, as the introductory melody is now played on electric violin, emulating an electric guitar, with bends and slides. This leads into the main section of the piece which is now played on electric violin put through a distortion unit, with heavy guitar chords as an accompaniment, along with counter melodies also played on electric violin. This section sets out to capture the excitement of the original, which always left the audience wanting for more at the end of a Curved Air set.”

Guitar Icon Merrell Fankhauser Revisits Jimi Hendrix’s Legendary ‘Rainbow Bridge’ In New Documentary

For Immediate Release

Guitar Icon Merrell Fankhauser Revisits Jimi Hendrix’s Legendary
‘Rainbow Bridge’ In New Documentary

London, UK – ‘Rainbow Bridge’ was a peculiar 1972 film featuring Jimi Hendrix (who had died two years before) and a cast of local eccentrics using Hendrix’s music and a whole slew of UFO sightings to explore their spirituality. 41 years later, musician and filmmaker Merrell Fankhauser revisits the film to explore its message more fully. The ‘Rainbow Bridge Revisited’ documentary was really Maui journalist Steve Omar’s idea, and Merrell and Steve produced it together. The two had fun looking up and interviewing the original cast of the 1972 Jimi Hendrix movie ‘Rainbow Bridge’ that was filmed on Maui. It was interesting to hear what they had to say about hanging out with Hendrix making the movie. The one-hour DVD documentary also features some great surfing and music by Merrell Fankhauser, The Space Patrol and Omar and The Wavespies. The package includes a 12-song soundtrack.

Merrell explains, “As you know I lived on Maui for 14 years and I moved there in ‘73 just a year after the Jimi Hendrix ‘Rainbow Bridge’ film came out. And when I moved there I met a lot of people that were in the movie, and a lot of them were hippies, surfers and cosmic people that were seeing UFOs, and they said Jimi was really into the whole UFO thing, and that there were even some hovering about when they were shooting over there. So we contacted the ones that we still knew were on Maui and we went over and interviewed them and it was really interesting what some of them had to say about hanging out with Hendrix and everything. Then we went down to Southern California, because some of them lived down there, and we interviewed a few of those, so we’ve got some really interesting interviews with an insight into some of the things that were going on with that movie with Hendrix that didn’t come out. In the original ‘Rainbow Bridge’, it follows Pat Hartley the actress from the Sunset Strip over to O’ahu and then to Maui where she meets all these characters, and ultimately Jimi. And the message, because of all of her travels and the way it was put together, kind of got lost a little bit in the different scenes and things. I talked to one of the guys from Warner Brothers who was in on the editing and he said that when they brought the film over it was in all of these bags and there was sand in it and they were almost afraid to put it on their machine, and had to clean it all and they kept going through this stuff and it was just a lot of hippies talking about cosmic stuff and getting high on drugs, and everybody kept saying ‘Where’s Jimi, where’s Jimi? Where’s the concert’ You know they were afraid they weren’t going to have enough to make the movie really good, but finally they got to the ‘Concert’ footage. So what we did, we kind of condensed these interviews down and we segue into some really great surfing on big waves over there, because a lot of the people that were interviewed were surfers and we have old footage of them surfing, and then we cut to surfing footage from now. I have about ten of my newer instrumental surf songs in there with the surfing, and then it goes to a couple of band performances – there were two Maui bands featured on the soundtrack: Omar and The Wavespies and The Space Patrol – the lead singer, Les Potts, was in the original ‘Rainbow Bridge’ movie.”

Rainbow Bridge Revisited CD Tracks: 1. All Along The Watchtower, 2. Last Wave at Hanalei, 3. Wild Gyrations, 4. Surfin 101, 5. Waterfall, 6. Hookipa, 7. Mother Sea, 8. The Wind Cried Maui, 9. Monster Swell, 10. Surf Rage, 11. The Wall, 12. Calling From A Star.

Merrell Fankhauser is considered one of the main innovators of surf music and psychedelic folk rock, and is widely known as the leader of the instrumental surf group The Impacts who had the international hit “Wipeout”. His travels from Hollywood to his 15 year jungle experience on the island of Maui have been documented in numerous music books and magazines in the US and Europe. Merrell has gained legendary international status throughout the field of rock music; his credits include over 300 songs published and released. Merrell Fankhauser has presented a number of television programs over the years including ‘California Music’, ‘Route 66 TV Live’, and in 2001 he began hosting a music show called ‘Tiki Lounge’ that airs on the California Central Coast, Southern California, Hawaii and parts of the East Coast.

Psych-Space Rockers Sons Of Hippies To Release Highly Anticipated New Album On Cleopatra Records – July 16, 2013

Psych-Space Rockers Sons Of Hippies To Release Highly Anticipated
New Album On Cleopatra Records – July 16, 2013

Los Angeles, CA – Florida-based Psych-Space rockers, Sons Of Hippies, take flight on the backs of mythical, winged beasts to bring you Griffons At The Gates Of Heaven, the band’s newest and most ambitious recording to date, available July 16 on Cleopatra Records. Mixed by legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, L7) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios, the album fearlessly synthesizes four decades of rock with heavily echoed, neo-Surf guitar, sinister mellotron and crunching power chords. “Rose,” the album’s second single, has achieved extensive support at radio, debuting on KROQ’s “Rodney On The ROQ” program earlier this month as well as landing on CMJ’s Top 200 chart. Simultaneously, the band has been touring across the eastern states, including several special engagements with UK prog legends Nektar.

Conceived by the spiritual union of guitarist/vocalist Katherine Kelly and drummer Jonas Canales amidst the good vibes of the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Sons Of Hippies began their journey in 2008, adding bassist David Daly to the fold in 2011. Together the trio conquered the Florida music scene, earning accolades from audiences and critics alike including honors from their local alternative weekly Creative Loafing. True to their name, the band struggles to maintain the hopeful humanism of their ‘60s forebears while living in today’s alienating post-modern society. “I have always been drawn to ideas of perception versus reality,” says Katherine, “Humans live to tell stories to each other. But what happens in translation is often such a mutation of the truth that we become ideas of ourselves instead of just ourselves. I want our music to remind people to come back to themselves.”

But the band isn’t all ponderous philosophy – the first official video promoting Griffons, “Spaceship Ride,” is a musical peyote trip back to child-like innocence, while the video for “Rose” cheekily sends-up ‘70s exploitation flicks with the band themselves cast as the surprised victims of 3 blood-lusty females. As UK magazine Vive Le Rock enthused in their review of Griffons “Psychedelia just got sexy.”

Griffons At The Gates Of Heaven is available on CD, vinyl and cassette!

Featuring! Joe Satriani, Tony Levin, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry, Marty Friedman, Michael Lee Firkins,
Phil Aaberg, 2Cellos, Tommy Henriksen

Phoenix, AZ – Guitar legend Steve Hunter, best known for his work with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, David Lee Roth, Jack Bruce and Aerosmith, has a new CD released, ‘The Manhattan Blues Project’, featuring an all-star guest line-up! This is Steve’s fifth solo album and is a culmination of his love of the Blues and New York City mixed with his love of melody and “Tone Poems”. After recording and touring with Alice Cooper in 2011, he decided to get off the road to write and record. He thought it would be cool to have some guest players join him and was overjoyed and humbled at the willingness of those he asked to contribute to this project. Many of the guests he had not worked with before and most had a very different style of playing to himself. There are two cover tunes but this album is mainly new material written, played and produced by Steve. He was very happy to also include a short composition by his friend Jason Becker, called “Daydream By The Hudson”.

“This album has been inside me trying to get out for a long time, I wanted to show the other side of New York, the soulful side plus it also says a lot of what I have always wanted to say on guitar.” – Steve Hunter

Guest players on The Manhattan Blues Project: Joe Satriani, Tony Levin, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry, Marty Friedman, Michael Lee Firkins, Phil Aaberg, 2Cellos, Tommy Henriksen

“I am honored to play along side legendary guitarist Steve Hunter on his stunning new album, check it out!” – Joe Satriani

On ‘The Manhattan Blues Project’ Steve goes back to his blues roots in his own unique way. You will hear string arrangements, vocal arrangements, a burst of guitar shredding by the best in the world and echoes of The Beatles. The two cover tunes include Steve’s instrumental version of Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill”, a song he had played the guitars on for the original album version in 1977. The second cover is from one of his favorite artists Marvin Gaye, “What’s Going On”.

“Steve really knows how to play a guitar. His silky delivery and smooth golden tones make you feel like you’ve just leaned back into your living room sofa after a rocky trip. His notes have a direct connection to your heart. He stirs the feelings that we all long for from a guitar. And like all masters, he makes perfection seem so easy.” – Dennis Dunaway

The Manhattan Blues Project is a rich, uplifting musical experience with lashings of soul, passion and outstanding performances from everybody involved!

Drum Legend Billy Cobham Launches Previously Unreleased 1997 Live Album ‘Compass Point’

Los Angeles, CA – In 1997, legendary jazz/fusion drummer Billy Cobham flew to New Providence in the Bahamas for a series of performances at the world famous Compass Point Hotel. Joined by his stellar jazz quartet including guitarist Carl Orr, keyboardist Gary Husband, and bassist Stefan Rademacher, the group recorded a set of all new compositions and improvisations. However, plagued by a series of troublesome events, the recordings remained on the shelf unheard by the general public – until now! The 2-CD set, entitled ‘Compass Point’, was released June 18 on Purple Pyramid Records.

Though the tropical setting proved idyllic, the hurdles the band had to overcome in making these recordings a reality were formidable. Storms hovered on the horizon threatening to overtake them, the stage that placed the band over the resort pools had yet to be built mere hours from showtime, and the only piano tuner in town had that very day quit the business because he had just won the lottery! Despite these setbacks, the band played magnificently, laying down an accomplished set of jazz/fusion pieces that run from the energetic yet haunting “Fragolino” to the smooth shuffle of “Les Cocos.”

Billy Cobham reflects, “All in all, the experience was genuinely a positive one and will live forever in my memories as one of the milestones in my musical career.”

And what an amazing career Billy Cobham has had. From his auspicious start in the late ‘60s touring and recording with the great Miles Davis to his groundbreaking work with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early ‘70s, Cobham built a reputation for complex and soulful drumming. But it wasn’t until 1973 and the release of his first solo album ‘Spectrum’ that he took the title of jazz fusion’s preeminent drummer with a style and technique all his own, one that has been a major influence on drummers worldwide ever since.

‘Flow and Change’ on Gonzo Multimedia – July 1, 2013

London, UK – Judy Dyble’s long-awaited new album, ‘Flow and Change’ is the follow-up to the much-acclaimed ‘Talking With Strangers’.

Produced and mostly co-written by Alistair Murphy (The Curator) and with contributions from Matt Malley (Counting Crows), Julianne Regan (All About Eve), Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson) & Mike Mooney (Spiritualized), gorgeous string arrangements by Phil Toms and fabulous artwork by Catherine Hyde and Jackie Morris.

This is an album to make you smile and make you cry, remember what it was like to be very young but also to understand the art of aging gracefully. With songs ranging through diverse genres, but all held together by Judy’s lyrics.

Sisterhood of Ruralists (edit) on YouTube

Judy’s past career has been eclectic. From being one of the original founding members of the extraordinary UK folk/rock band Fairport Convention, after the first and rockiest of their albums, she left to join with fellow London based musician, and later founder member of Foreigner, Ian McDonald.

Advertising in Melody Maker with the simple words “Judy Dyble requires brilliant and creative bass guitarist/vocalist and lead guitarist vocalist. Musicians only” resulted in a collaboration with the musicians who later collectively became King Crimson – Robert Fripp, Peter and Mike Giles.

Judy however moved on again after recording a few songs with them which later surfaced as ‘The Brondesbury Tapes’ and she became one half of the stunning, if short lived duo Trader Horne, whose eponymous (and only) long player ‘Morning Way’ is still considered to be a classic of its day.

After a short, but jolly collaboration with Lol Coxhill and Canterbury musicians Steve and Phil Miller as DC & the MBs, Judy promptly retired to the rolling English countryside to raise a family, until 30 years later she returned to music to create new music in a way that hadn’t even been dreamed of in 1970. The internet had arrived in the intervening years and with it the ability to record remotely and seamlessly weave contributions from everywhere into a beautiful tapestry of songs. Thus ‘Talking With Strangers’ was born in 2009 and now ‘Flow and Change’ is released in 2013 on Gonzo Multimedia.
