Premier Guitar Interview with Dave Davies

Dave Davies photo 1

Interview: Dave Davies – Pure Spirit
Joe Charupakorn

The former Kinks lead guitarist talks about changing the course of guitar history with “You Really Got Me,” what he thinks of Van Halen’s version, and what it would take to bridge the cataclysmic rift between him and brother Ray.

With all the tone-chasing we guitarists do today, you hear a lot of talk about how certain things are going to make some magical difference in our sound. We’ll argue endlessly about whether class-A amps, new-old-stock tubes, germanium transistors, and countless other minutiae are superior to their alternatives. But rarely do you hear us talk about getting that perfect sound by purposely ravaging the structural integrity of our gear. Perhaps that’s a shame—because when former Kinks lead guitarist Dave Davies turned visceral in his tone pursuits back in 1964 while recording the band’s seminal hit “You Really Got Me,” he single-handedly changed the sound of rock ’n’ roll forever.
“I always wanted to write a song about that period in my life and what was going on,” Davies recently told Premier Guitar. And with “Little Green Amp,” the lead single from his new solo album, I Will Be Me, he did just that. Back when Davies and fellow Kinks—older brother Ray (vocals and rhythm guitar), bassist Pete Quaife, and drummer Mick Avory—were recording their eponymous debut, Dave couldn’t get a sound that he liked out of his tiny green Elpico amp. It was either too bassy or too bright, but never right. So he decided to slash the speaker with a Gillette razor blade. The result was a raw, ragged, primal distortion that went down in history forever. “In all modesty,” says Dave, “I think that sound changed an awful lot of people’s values and ideas about guitar playing, and music in general.”

Make music evolve: an interview with Don Preston (GrandMothers of Invention)

MUSIC JUNE 23, 2013 BY: GARY SCHWIND

Don Preston was one of the members of The Mothers of Invention from 1968-74, who now plays with the GrandMothers of Invention. By phone, he discussed the history of The Mothers, working with Frank Zappa, and surviving the Montreux fire in 1971.

The Mothers to this day doesn’t really sound like any other band. How did the band carve that niche for itself?

The main thing is it’s a five-piece group. We have to cover so many bases with that configuration, it necessitates that it takes doing a different arrangement of the music. On “Inca Roads,” I have to play keyboards and marimba or at least the marimba sound and try to get that all covered. The guitar player plays some of the melodies that Zappa couldn’t play at the time.

Did you realize then what a unique musical entity you had?

I don’t know if someone knows that. Maybe toward the end of his life, he started realizing that. It’s a combination of things. He knew that he was good and he knew that he had something unique. As far as realizing the importance of that in history, I think he kind of had an idea of that.

Herald de Paris Interview with Dave Davies

kink-davies

A perfectly ridiculous rock and roll conversation with The Kinks’ Dave Davies
BY AL CARLOS HERNANDEZ ON JUNE 20, 2013
HOLLYWOOD (Herald de Paris) – Dave Davies is the co-founder of the super iconic rock group The Kinks – a seminal band that changed the very landscape of rock music. The Beatles opened up for them in the beginning of their performance career.
Davies was born in London, England. His was a close-knit, working-class family and Davies was exposed to a variety of musical styles, from family sing-alongs at the piano to the early jazz and rock music that his six older sisters listened to. At just 13, he played his first show with his older brother, Ray Davies. Two years later, Davies, his brother and their friends Pete Quaife and Mick Avory formed the band that would come to be known as The Kinks. As a guitarist, his dissonant chord in You’ve Really Got Meinfluenced musicians and his song Death of Clown hit number three on the charts.
The Kinks released their self-titled debut album in 1964 and embarked on a world tour a year later. While the band came together seamlessly enough, conflict was always in the background. A rivalry had festered between the Davies brothers since childhood and Dave Davies and drummer Mick Avory had a turbulent relationship. The band broke up in 1996 and Davies continued writing and recording music – even after a stroke in 2004.

Guitar Legend Steve Hillage Releases Rare ‘Live In England 1979’ CD/DVD Set!

London, UK – Steve Hillage is widely considered a guitar innovator, and is associated with the Canterbury scene, working in experimental domains since the late 1960s. Besides his critically acclaimed solo recordings, along with Gong, Steve has been a member of the ensembles Khan and System 7. Much to the excitement of his fans worldwide, Gonzo MultiMedia UK has released ‘Steve Hillage – Live In England 1979’ on a CD/DVD set!

Says Steve, “This was a great performance from another fine period of my band in the late ’70s with John McKenzie on bass and Andy Anderson on drums.”

Steve Hillage first came to prominence as a member of the multi-national rock band Gong. Steve appeared on successful albums such as ‘Angels Egg’, ‘You’ and his final album with the band ‘Shamal’. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled ‘Fish Rising’. This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however, Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System 7.

In 1976 Steve recorded the album ‘L’, which was produced by Todd Rundgren. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the first Steve Hillage Band, which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976.

From 1976 to 1979, Steve Hillage released several critically acclaimed albums and toured the world. Following the live debut of a new line-up, the Steve Hillage Band toured extensively throughout 1979. This CD/DVD set captures a stunning performance by this great line-up of the band! Playing with Steve are the ever-present Miquette Giraudy (synthesiser, vocals), John McKenzie (Bass, Vocals), Andy Anderson (Drums) and Dave Stewart (2nd Guitar). This is the line-up that recorded some of the live tracks and the studio side of Steve’s 1979 release Live Herald. The studio tracks from ‘Live Herald’ eventually came out on CD as part of the album ‘Open’.

The track listing to this historic 1979 performance from the Steve Hillage Band includes: “Salmon Song”, “Unzipping the Zype”, “Hurdy Gurdy Man”, “1988 Aktivator”, “Unidentified Flying Being”, and “It`s All Too Much”.

Bonus tracks on the CD include “Hurdy Gurdy Glissando” (live 1977) and “Electrick Gypsies” (live 1977), recorded with the ‘L’ tour line-up.

Bonus material on the DVD includes two short promo videos for “Radio” and “Light in the Sky” (from the album ‘Motivation Radio’) and a more recent in-depth interview with Steve and Miquette.

Steve currently sees his System 7, Mirror System, and Steve Hillage Band entities as operating in parallel and has been writing some new rock-based material for a possible Steve Hillage Band album for release in 2014/15. System 7 and Japanese psychedelic progressive jam-band ROVO will be releasing a new CD in September 2013. To hear samples of the new album: http://rovoandsystem7.bandcamp.com/

Paul Adams album ‘SLEEP The Dreaming Flute’ Chosen “Native Flute Album of the Year” by the Zone Music Reporter

Asheville, NC – Paul Adams album SLEEP The Dreaming Flute was voted Native Flute album of the year at the Zone Music Awards show in New Orleans on May 11th. He has made a career building instruments for some very well known musicians, and composed 10 critically acclaimed albums as a guitarist, Flute Player, and Multi Instrumentalist. SLEEP was recorded for gentle spirited man dealing with Parkinson’s Disease, and sleepless nights. “I created slow dreamy songs using Native American Flutes and the sounds of Nature. I then sent them to my friend with Parkinson’s who offered feedback on each tune. He and his wife really had a good feel for what was right.”

Michael Foster of AMBIENT VISIONS writes “Adams masterful playing and his ability to communicate very deep feelings of tranquility via his flute, create for the listener an atmosphere permeated with spirit that is calm and relaxing!”

Bill Binkleman of The Zone Music Report says “Adams once again proves he deserves to be listed among the finest wooden flute players recording today. Sleep – The Dreaming Flute is a sumptuously relaxing album. This CD will reward the listener time and time again. Paul Adams is a true master of his instrument and I highly recommend this album.”

“Music has so much to offer,” says Adams. The mind is very powerful, and with music can be an influential force on the path toward health”. More and more the medical professionals are embracing the magic involved in music. Oliver Sacks, the Neurologist and Author of the movie ‘Awakenings’ staring Robert De Niro, and Robin Williams, authored a book entitled ‘Musicophilia’, in which he describes the miraculous power of music on Neuropathways in the brain (The Alzheimer patient not recognizing loved ones, yet their ability to play the first song ever learned on the piano. The stutterer’s difficulty communicating, yet singing lyrics without error. The patient with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder using the soothing effects of music to learn calm, clarity, and safety. The examples are endless.)

Throughout his career, Paul’s albums have gathered international acclaim in many different areas such as World Fusion, New Age, Ambient, Jazz, and Native American. Adams music can be heard world wide on Satellite Networks like Sirius, Music Choice, Muzak and DMX, Pandora,as well as Terrestrial and Internet Radio.

Some music professionals were dubious about Adams title ‘SLEEP’. They felt Radio might be afraid to use it. However other albums of his in a similar vein such as ‘HEAVENS’, and ‘FLUTE MEDITATIONS FOR DREAMING CLOUDS’, have been getting heavy rotation on Satellite networks Like Sirius/XM, Music Choice, Muzak, and DMX throughout the world. “SLEEP is something I hope will be helpful for people in need. However, I didn’t want the albums to be purely clinical. I tried to keep the them artistically interesting as well. We’ve heard a few albums in this genre that didn’t scratch the artistic itch. It was important to create a marriage of artistic depth and safe Serenity and healing.”

Along with this new album, Adams created a website called A PLACE OF PEACE (www.pauladams.org/aplaceofpeace) where people can go to listen to beautiful healing and enrapturing music, video’s, and read various articles and poems specifically written for those seeking accompaniment down the path of peace and health.

Besides his experience in music and the arts, Adams has worked in the Mental Health Field 30 years and teaches professionals how to use music in the therapeutic practice. “I’ve always wished there was a place to go where one can just sit down and be soothed, reassured, rested, and content. The use of nature in Video and Music is a very organic way to align ones self with the earth, and receive a sense of “Connection” that is needed to feel alive, safe, and rested. ‘SLEEP The Dreaming Flute’ is available worldwide through his website as well as Amazon, CD Baby, iTunes, eMusic, AIMCMC, Rhapsody, etc

Sons Of Hippies To Premiere New Single & Video “Rose” On MXDWN

Los Angeles, CA – In anticipation of their brand new full length album, Florida-based psychedelic space rock trio Sons Of Hippies will premiere a new single and video “Rose” on the music & culture website MXDWN.com this Monday, June 17th. “Rose” is the second single from the Hippies’ new album, Griffons At The Gates Of Heaven, mixed by Jack Endino (Nirvana, L7) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios, to be released July 16th on Cleopatra Records.

Directed by James Herrholz, “Rose” stars SOH vocalist/guitarist Katherine Kelly, drummer Jonas Canales and bassist David Daly out for a drive in their classic, cherry red Mustang on a sun soaked Florida afternoon when they encounter a seductive trio of car washing vixens. Much sudsy fun and playful teasing ensues. But things are not all what they seem and soon enough the story takes a shocking turn you’ll have to see to believe!

Sons Of Hippies was conceived high in the mountains of Tennessee amid fellow music lovers at a festival on a 700-acre farm. Their name originated when Brazilian native Jonas Canales and Florida-bred Katherine Kelly probed familial bonds to discover they were, indeed, children of hippy parents. The duo’s dreamy, melodic but complexly synthesized music struck a chord with audiences and earned the band a critic’s choice award from Tampa’s popular Creative Loafing magazine for “Best Modern-Sounding Record” in 2009. Bassist David Daly joined the group in 2011 and in December of the following year, the band signed with Cleopatra Records. The resulting album is the group’s strongest and most ambitious set of recordings to date, and earned these young upstarts a spot on a summer tour with two giants of classic and progressive rock.

The GrandMothers Of Invention Featuring Legendary Zappa Alumni Don Preston & Napoleon Murphy Brock To Embark On ‘One Size Fits All And More’ US Tour

The GrandMothers Of Invention Featuring Legendary Zappa Alumni
Don Preston & Napoleon Murphy Brock To Embark On ‘One Size Fits All And More’ US Tour

Los Angeles, CA – Having just completed a month long European tour of performances in the CZECH REPUBLIC, HUNGARY, SLOVAKIA, AUSTRIA, GERMANY, HOLLAND, SWITZERLAND, the GrandMothers Of Invention, featuring legendary Frank Zappa alumni Napoleon Murphy Brock and special guest artist Don Preston, once again will tour America. This time around the ensemble will be performing the ONE SIZE FITS ALL album in its entirety, along with other MOI/FRANK ZAPPA favorites from BONGO FURY, OVERNITE SENSATION, ROXY & ELSEWHERE, UNCLE MEAT and WERE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY!

Says Napoleon, “If you liked last year’s tours of us performing the entire ‘Roxy & Elsewhere’ album, you will really have fun this tour, because we are doing ‘One Size Fits All’ in its entirety! (Which includes both German and English versions of “Sofa”) The difference between the GrandMothers Of Invention performing last year’s ‘Roxy’, and this year’s ‘One Size Fits All’, is that the original lead singer for both albums is the same lead singer performing these songs live on stage. This is NOT a tribute band! The GrandMothers Of Invention is the ONLY band currently playing the music of Frank Zappa with two of the original members of the Mothers Of Invention. Come on down and sing along if you know the words!”

Says Don, “This tour will be quite an adventure as we will be performing the entire ‘One Size Fits All’ CD. ‘Inca Roads’ is one of Zappa’s best efforts in music writing along with the other songs on that CD, and the band is ready. This band is the tightest ever! Of course that includes the songs that Napoleon recorded with Zappa like ‘Andy’, ‘Florentine Pogan’ and ‘Sofa #2’. Of course I will have some surprises that are just too weird to reveal here.”

The GrandMothers of Invention are the only Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention alumni who have been consistently performing the music of the maestro since 2003. From the classic ‘Freak Out’, ‘Absolutely Free’, ‘We’re Only In It For The Money’, ‘Uncle Meat’, and ‘Burnt Weeny Sandwich’ and ‘Weasels Ripped My Flesh’, to ‘Apostrophe’, ‘The Grand Wazoo’, ‘Overnite Sensation’, ‘Roxy & Elsewhere’, ‘Bongo Fury’ and ‘One Size Fits All’ – they have performed on a very long list of classic Frank Zappa & the Mother’s of Invention’s albums, movies and other projects.

Says the press: “Rare are the musicians who can even play Zappa’s music, let alone make it live and breathe. So Thank the Lord for the GrandMothers of Invention.”…“With two different Zappa eras represented, the GrandMothers have a wide palette of material to choose from.”…“They served up vintage psychedelia – rock songs with surreal lyrics, jazz-like harmonies and melodic complexity, with flashes of wacky satire.”…“Amazing virtuoso musicians, fun and funny.”

The GrandMothers Of Invention are:

NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK
(Mothers of Invention/Frank Zappa alumni from 1974 thru 1984), on vocals, tenor saxophone, flute, suavenicity, and dancing(!). Napoleon won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2009!

Ray Manzarek & Roy Rogers ‘Twisted Tales’ CD Now Available!

“In our last meeting together before his passing, Ray and I were both very excited about the upcoming release of ‘Twisted Tales’. We signed off on the artwork and agreed that it should be released sooner than later. So, honoring that decision, I have proceeded with the release. We both were proud of this recording and hope that people enjoy it. This recording is dedicated to Ray’s memory” – Roy Rogers

Nevada City, CA – Ray Manzarek and Roy Rogers have received no shortage of kudos since they first recorded together five years ago. Ray Manzarek’s signature keyboard sound was a cornerstone of The Doors – one of the most iconic rock bands of the 60’s. An inductee into the R&R Hall of Fame – he certainly needs no introduction. In the pantheon of music, The Doors’ music continues to be one of the most revered rock song catalogs of any band. Slide guitarist Roy Rogers has been lauded not only for his own recordings but for his long-time collaboration with harmonica master Norton Buffalo as well as his producing of 4 CD projects for blues icon John Lee Hooker and folk legend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. He is well known worldwide for his mastery of slide guitar and has received 8 Grammy nominations for his work as artist and producer.
http://www.manzarekrogersband.com
http://www.roy-rogers.com

In 2011 Manzarek-Rogers released ‘Translucent Blues’- a blues-rock collection of songs tinged with poetry and literary references. The project reached #1 on the Americana Roots chart and debuted at #6 on the Billboard blues chart. The lyrical contributions came from such diverse co-writers as Jim Carroll, Warren Zevon and poet Michael McClure, among others. ‘Twisted Tales’ draws from some of those same writers to tell very different stories. Featured musicians are Kevin Hayes on drums, formerly with the Robert Cray Band; Steve Evans on bass who has performed with the Elvin Bishop Band; and George Brooks on saxophones, who has performed with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain.

The new release is a collaboration of keyboard and guitar sounds that merge with stories, images and art. These two amazing musicians create an intoxicating; plush sound that is – more than unique. Manzarek and Rogers are seemingly an odd pairing – but their new recording unleashes a stunning musical landscape for the listener – this music will ‘take you for a ride’… There is a full-length documentary film to be released examining their unique collaboration and friendship in depth this fall.

‘Twisted Tales’ is destined to become a classic, not only as Ray Manzarek’s last recording, but also as a definitive work of two great artists. Available at http://www.manzarek-rogersband.com/ Amazon and iTunes and retailers nationwide.

Making this event even more exciting, a mind-bending video will accompany the single featuring footage from Nik’s recent performance at The Echoplex in Los Angeles! Nik Turner was a founding member of Hawkwind during what has been considered their most commercially successful and critically acclaimed period from 1970 to 1976. He wrote/co-wrote some of the group’s most popular songs such as “Brainstorm” and “Master Of The Universe”, which was recently used in an ad campaign for Ford’s new B-Max car. Innovative French Music Artist Marcus To Release Debut Solo Album ‘Catch 22’ – June 18, 2013

Passion, urgency, energy, gorgeous melodies and creative lyrics, served by a sharp voice reminiscent of Peter Hammill’s!

Paris, France – There’s magic in the music of songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Marcus Linon. Passion, urgency, energy, gorgeous melodies and creative lyrics, served by a sharp voice that sometimes reminds you of Peter Hammill’s. Here are some of the attributes of Marcus, a talented young musician from Paris, whose first album, ‘Catch 22’, is about to be released. Add to this the fact that Marcus plays all the instruments, great multi-layered drumming, incisive guitar riffs, melodic keyboards and you have the foundation for a serious talent to pay attention to.

Says Marcus, “At the time I did this record, the most important thing was to try and do something that’s special/different, the structures of the songs, the sound. I wanted to try and do something that’s ‘easy to listen’ for the majority of people, but when you go deeper, you realize it is much more complex than what it lets you hear the first time you listen to it.”

Growing up in a family of musicians, Marcus became a talented drummer before evolving into an instinctive guitarist. His sharp and precise voice perfectly complements songs deeply anchored in a solid rock foundation. Catch 22 has the energy of pure rock and incorporates complex melodic structures veering sometimes towards pop, folk, even east-Indian music. Son of legendary Stella Vander (Magma, Offering), Marcus directed the Magma ‘EPOK’ DVD series, and developed/executes the very sharp light design for Magma’s tours.

Marcus’s voice will grab you. His songs are not the kind that you easily forget. They will catch you off-guard, carry you into a passionate universe and sweep you off the floor. Don’t just take my word for it, listen to “We are life and love” with its burning urgency, “Skyzophrenia” or “A boxful of eyes” with their fantastic lyrics just to name 3 titles from an album that you will play again and again, every time an opportunity to discover something new.

Says Marcus about his new CD, “I often say that it’s a drummer’s album. Because everything is based on rhythms and all the inspiration for the arrangements came from the drum parts (which is my first instrument). At the time I played little guitar, but I had no idea how to write songs (in the traditional sense), I just tried to let out the melodies and rhythms that I had in my head as naturally as possible. And simply not try and control them, just played them as they came out. This was the key to make it different. For the lyrics, I had precise melodies but usually only a few words, sentences, or a general idea of what I wanted to sing about.
