This release features new songs that span Rock, Fusion, Funk and even a ballad or two. This is the first worldwide official release by Narada Michael Walden on his new imprint Tarpan Records.

Narada Michael Walden has produced many household names including: Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Regina Belle, Steve Winwood, Ray Charles, Wynonna Judd, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Barbara Streisand, Lionel Ritchie, Elton John, Sting, Carlos Santana, Shanice Wilson, Tevin Campbell, Lisa Fischer, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones, Jeff Beck and The Temptations. He was awarded Grammys for Producer of the Year in 1988, Album of the Year for the movie soundtrack The Bodyguard in 1993 and the R&B Song of the Year in 1985 for Aretha Franklin’s Freeway of Love. Billboard Magazine also named him one of the “Top Ten Producers with the Most Number One Hits”.

As impressive a production and songwriting resume as Narada Michael Walden has assembled over the past thirty years, he has earned equal acclaim as a recording and performing artist in his own right. Beginning as a drummer with the pioneering Mahavishnu Orchestra (replacing Billy Cobham at 19 years old), Narada also toured with Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin, and Weather Report. With eleven acclaimed solo albums of his own which produced Dance Hits such as, I Shoulda Loved Ya, Divine Emotions, I Don’t Want Nobody Else to Dance With You, along the way, he has achieved greatness in a wide range of sonic arenas. Walden’s music includes groundbreaking soundtrack work on such blockbuster films as The Bodyguard, Free Willy, Beverly Hills Cops II, 9 ½ Weeks and Stuart Little to the EMMY-winning “One Moment In Time,” the theme to the 1988 Olympic Games.

Thunder 2013 is a strong new direction from Narada Michael Walden, inspired by his recent successful two-year tour with the Jeff Beck Band. Narada returned home to finish this album and put together his band to tour on his own. In early February 2012, Narada Michael Walden returned from a well received 10 day stint of shows at the Blue Note in Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan to perform at the White House in an all-star band for President Obama’s “Red, White and Blues” Concert with legends B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Trombone Shorty, Booker T Jones and more. Narada enlisted some amazing musicians and performers for his band on Thunder 2013 including: Nikita Germaine (Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and Patty Austin) on Vocals, Frank Martin (Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Madonna, Jennifer Hudson, John McLaughlin, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen) on Keyboards, Angeline Saris (Gretchen Menn, Zepperella) on Bass and Vocals, Matthew Charles Heulitt (Zigaboo Modaliste, Salvador Santana, Megan Slankard, Eion Harrington) on Guitars.

His new label, Tarpan Records is a home for many great established artists and some amazing up-and-coming artists as well. Los Angeles, CA – Purple Pyramid Records will be releasing on CD a vintage concert recording of legendary San Francisco psychedelic jam band Quicksilver Messenger Service titled ‘Live At The Old Mill Tavern – March 29, 1970’ on August 27, 2013. Packaged in a sleek digi-pack, the CD features a rare performance by the newly formed 6-piece line-up, playing several new songs and old favorites.

By early 1970, Dino Valenti, a veteran of Quicksilver’s earliest incarnations, had returned to the frontline of the group. Touring constantly, the band were riding high from the success of their third album ‘Shady Grove’, released just a few months previously. Says Gary Duncan, “Live shows were our bread and butter. We didn’t sell a lot of records like some of the other groups… But we played a lot of shows – constantly.”

From the CD liner notes by famed writer Dave Thompson: “The six-piece band – Dino Valenti, Gary Duncan, John Cippolina, David Freiberg, and Greg Elmore – had only been playing together a few months, since New Year at the Fillmore rang in this new decade, and they are blazing tonight. Fiery and more fiery still…waiting in the wings for encore time was harmonica legend Jimmy Cotton, whose eponymous Blues Band was kicking the crap out of more or less every band it came up against in concert. Apart from Quicksilver… There’s a lot of live Quicksilver material out there, and that is how it should be. The records are great but, as all the members have said, it was live that the Messenger Service really smoked, and the live tapes that truly mark the life and times that they lived so well. This recording punches all of those buttons, and a whole bunch more besides!”

Atlanta, GA – Music fans and critics alike are buzzing with excitement about the news of Atlanta prog ensemble The SixxiS opening for Mike Portnoy’s new band The Winery Dogs upcoming European tour in September 2013. The SixxiS are touring in support of their recently released self-titled CD, which has been garnering major attention worldwide! After their first successful tour of Europe as direct support for classic rock legends Wishbone Ash, The SixxiS are gearing up for their second tour, in which they will play 15 shows in 8 different countries spanning Western Europe (England, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal).

Says founding member and lead vocalist Vladdy Iskhakov, “The European tour with Wishbone Ash was our first tour overseas. We could not have asked for a better band to be an opener for. They were compete gentlemen, and really helped us through many things we had encountered on the road. We did our best to learn as much as we could from them, because, after all, they have been around for a very long time. I think we formed a great bond and mutual respect for each other, not only as professional musicians, but as people. Their fans were unbelievable! The response we got was amazing!”

What started as a collaboration of different musicians in June 2006 became a powerhouse band consisting of world class musicians. The SixxiS, initially the brainchild of the lead singer, Vladdy Iskhakov, exhibit a wide range of musical influences ranging from classic, jazz and rock music coated in a powerful, heavy, seductive and emotional shell of sound reminiscent of Rush, Muse, Soundgarden, System of a Down, Kings X and Alice In Chains. Due to the musical prowess of the band members, the trio are able to toy with time signatures and syncopation, to grasp the magnetism of robust dynamics, and to focus on the individual mastery of each respective instrument while continuing to be a cohesive whole. The lyrics demand attention from listeners, as they are messages of a soul crying out for spiritual awakening and awareness. The combination of haunting melodies, soaring vocal harmonies, distorted guitars, and a truly ‘powerhouse’ rhythm section of drums and bass make the SixxiS sound unique and unforgettable!

After quietly finishing their first full-length independent album entitled ‘Believe’, The SixxiS quickly caught the attention of Grammy Award winning producer Malcolm Springer, who produced their new CD at Warner Brothers Studios in Nashville. In June 2012, the band signed with manager Tony Conway (Garth Brooks, Dixie Chicks, George Straight, etc), who secured their first international distribution deal with WBA Records, making available the band’s new release at all major music outlets (iTunes, Walmart, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc). After a year of honing their live act, The SixxiS would go on to share the stage with bands like the Adrian Belew Power Trio, Winger and Buck Cherry.

The group’s new CD illustrates the overall stripped down sound of the core three-piece group. Says Vladdy, “The music was produced to make us more ‘mainstream’ than the previous album we recorded, which was much more eclectic. Our sound has always been an enigma to those who listen to our music. Some get it immediately…some think they get it…some don’t understand it at all… People generally have a hard time placing our sound…it’s not alternative enough to be alternative…it’s not progressive enough to be pure progressive rock…it’s its own thing. Sure, there are several bands whose influence can be heard in our music, but overall it is independent.” Along with the new studio recordings, the CD and bonus DVD features 3 live tracks taken from the band’s performance in August 2012 at the 12th and Porter (venue) in Nashville.

The SixxiS consist of Vladdy Iakhakov (lead vocals, violin, piano, rhythm guitar), Mark Golden (bass, synth), and Josh “Jbake” Baker (drums, percussion, pads, vocals). The band are supplemented when performing live by multi-instrumentalists Paul Sorah and Cameron Allen. “The unity that music offers us is a testament to its power,” Vladdy explains. “Again, coming from different lifestyles, cultures, races and religious affiliations, music is the one thing that helps unify all these experiences together and present them to our listeners as a unique blend. Los Angeles, CA – Progressive Metallers THOUGHT CHAMBER are finally back with a new release, following up on their acclaimed debut album “Angular Perceptions” from 2007. The U.S. based group named their second album release “Psykerion” and it will be released on September 16th, 2013 in Europe and on October 1st, 2013 in North America via InsideOutMusic.

Next to guitarist and composer Michael Harris as well as vocalist Ted Leonard (also in Enchant, Spock’s Beard and Affector), THOUGHT CHAMBER’s ranks of skilled players now also feature Bill Jenkins (also in Enchant) on keyboards, Jeff Plant on bass and Mike Haid on drums.

THOUGHT CHAMBER’s mastermind Michael Harris checked in to comment about the new album as follows: “We’re all very excited about finally releasing ‘Psykerion’! A lot of changes have occurred in the band since our first record. Beyond Ted & I, we now have Mike Haid on drums, Jeff Plant on bass and Bill Jenkins on keyboards, who all did a stellar job and are all great guys on top of that, so our chemistry is perfect. ‘Psykerion’ is a concept record – a sci-fi human drama – musically yielding everything from prog-metal to jazz-fusion to acoustic.”

“Psykerion” contains 16 tracks / 64 minutes of superb true progressive metal with a technical sci-fi twist, likely to appeal to fans of Dream Theater, Yes, Rush or Planet X. The album’s cover artwork, which can be seen above, was designed by John E. Holland / MistyMountainGraphics.com. The album was recorded in various locations between 2012 and 2013 and finally mixed and mastered by Tom Size (Y&T, Aerosmith, Mr. Big, Enchant) at Tomland Studios, Pacheco, CA.

Last night I went to see Jon Anderson in solo concert at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. The show was billed thus: “Frontman of one of the biggest bands of all time, Jon Anderson brings his stunning voice and exquisite songs to Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre for this very special solo performance. Expect a magical night that draws from the YES songbook and includes all-time classics such as Owner Of A Lonely Heart, Wonderous Stories, Long Distance Runaround, and Yours Is no Disgrace.” The venue sounded interesting and lived up to its description on the Royal Exchange site: “The Royal Exchange Theatre is a seven-sided, glass-walled capsule, literally suspended from huge marble pillars situated in The Great Hall of the historic Victorian Cotton Exchange Buildings in Manchester city centre. The unique design means all seats are less than nine metres from the circular stage giving views from all angles.” I arrived around 7pm after a uneventful drive down the A1 and across the M62.

Vocalist Murray Hockridge and guitarist Dave Kilminster just released their first album of beautifully crafted acoustic covers titled ‘Closer To Earth’ on Killer Guitar Records, via Cherry Red Records. As fate would have it, a chance meeting brought these two musical innovators together for this special project. Says Dave, “This is essentially an album of acoustic covers, where we’ve taken some songs that we love and reconstructed them in a unique way. Also, it’s an interesting format too, as I can’t think of another acoustic duo where they both play guitar, sing lead vocals and throw in some crazy soloing too!”

“The creative potential when you find this kind of chemistry is truly open ended,” enthuses Murray (vocals, rhythm guitar & production), “there are so many combinations of instruments and voicings we can call on, both in the studio and on stage – there are no limits.”

Murray’s three-octave voice is absolutely breathtaking and appears utterly effortless. Although a talented songwriter, interpreting other writers’ songs is very much in Murray’s DNA. Best known for his work with Roger Waters and Keith Emerson, Dave Kilminster is a gifted guitarist and songwriter. Unreleased Rare Recordings Of Guitar Legend Tommy Bolin To Be Released On New Compilation ‘Whirlwind’

Los Angeles, CA – A spectacular collection of rare and unreleased recordings from famed guitarist of Deep Purple, James Gang and the Billy Cobham band, Tommy Bolin will be released on August 13th by Purple Pyramid Records. ‘Whirlwind’, produced by Greg Hampton and Johnnie Bolin, features rare material from Bolin’s jazz-rock band Energy, an epic 26-minute version of “Marching Powder” (here called “Marching Bag”) from his first solo album ‘Teaser’, as well as songs Tommy was preparing for his third solo album before his untimely death in 1976.

Tommy Bolin ‘Whirlwind’ will be released in both a beautiful 8-panel, 2-CD digipak and a 2-LP gatefold vinyl set. For the ultimate collector, Purple Pyramid Records will be releasing a special limited (1000 only) deluxe box edition of this exciting collection, which includes the 2-CD digipak plus 4 color postcards, a Tommy Bolin signature guitar pick, collectable patch and pin!

London, UK – Mountain meets bioethics! Legendary Mountain drummer Corky Laing teams up with two internationally acclaimed philosophers (Prof. Matti Häyry and Dr. Tuija Takala) in this joint effort that brings together ’70s style music and contemporary moral problems of gene technology.

‘Playing God’ is a concept album. ‘Playing God’ is a musical metaphor for today’s attempt to attain perfection.

Musically the album covers many feels and approaches from soft ballads to riff-driven guitar rock, from meditative instrumentals to operatic melody lines. At its core, the guitar-bass-drums combo is complemented with powerful singing. While Corky Laing, the drummer, is known – and his forceful, innovative and mesmerizing drumming features heavily on the album – ‘Playing God’ also introduces Corky Laing, the singer. There is such strength and depth to his voice that one can only wonder why the world has not, prior to this, known him as the lead singer he is. The main female leads are sang by Maya Paakkari (an entrancing raspy voice from Finland), Bonnie Parker (a wide-ranging singer from the band Tang), and Denny Colt (another voice of power and attitude from Tang). The album also features Eric Schenkman (from Spin Doctors) on guitar. ‘Playing God’ was recorded and produced in Finland and further benefits from the local talent of Finnish musicians, singers, and sound engineers.

While ‘Playing God’ is a rock album, it is also a soundtrack to a rock opera. It takes the listener to tomorrow’s world by introducing the small town of Happyville, where the people have enjoyed the benefits of genetic engineering for years without any thought. There’s a man who sells science and parents seeking to perfect their children, there are difficult choices and the need to find someone to blame when things don’t go to plan. The choices these people are making are not new, it is just that the tools available are more sophisticated. ‘Playing God’ is a study of the human condition. The themes of the rock opera are based on theoretical research, but the practical questions it poses are relevant to us all.

‘Playing God’ is something new. It represents a crossover between academic research and rock. The ethical and philosophical questions raised by modern biotechnologies are made accessible by using rock music as a medium. On the surface, the storylines are easy to follow, but they also lend themselves to deep philosophical questions about the future of humanity.

Just enjoy the music – or allow yourself to be taken on a journey into your own moral convictions. In both cases, you will find something new amidst the familiar.
