Interview : Patrick Moraz (solo, YES, The Moody Blues)
Δημοσιεύθηκε 18 Ιουνίου 2014 | Από thodoris | In English

HIT CHANNEL EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: June 2014. We had the great honour to talk with a great keyboardist: Patrick Moraz. He was a member of YES from 1974 to 1976 and of The Moody Blues from 1978 to 1990. Previously he had formed Mainhorse with Jean Ristori and Refugee with Lee Jackson and Brian Davison, former members of The Nice. He has an interesting solo career and he has recorded with Chick Corea and Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson). This year, he took part in the “Cruise to The Edge”. Read below the very interesting things he told us:

Was it an interesting experience to record “L.A Woman” with Jimi Jamison (Survivor) and Ted Turner (Wishbone Ash) for the tribute album, “Light My Fire – A Classic Rock Salute to The Doors”?
I think it was a great experience because it made me rediscover The Doors, of whom I knew the music before and I was asked to do the keyboard part without copying Ray Manzarek. The record company wanted us to keep some of the original passages, the instrumental passages and so on and I had fun doing it. I did all the keyboard parts: you know, solos on the keyboards, on the electric pianos and searching sounds. I think it was my idea to have the door opening and shutting in the very beginning of the track. I did all the piano lines and so on. I had a very good rapport with Billy Sherwood, whom I know personally of course, because he was also in a group I used to be a member of as well, YES. I was having a lot of fun experimenting with the song they provided me, with the basic backing track. I think it was a very rich sonic experience for me to do that. I think Jimi Jamison did a very good job, as well as Billy on bass and the guitarist and the drummer as well. I just heard it for the first time yesterday (ed: 15 June), would you believe? It’s a really-really good surprise.

What are the current projects you are involved in?
I’m currently in Los Angeles to finish some big productions on my own, where I composed all the music. I have one project I’m finishing actually until the end of the month. And I have also the continuation with my own soon-to-be-released solo album. You know, I’m in the finishing progress right now.

Local Band for Hire Interview with Terry Bozzio

Terry Bozzio Interview 2014: Rhythm & Sketch
ON JUNE 15, 2014 BY THOMAS MANGANO

Iconic drummer Terry Bozzio took time during his hugely successful world tour to talk to Local Band about his new music and his new art. Bozzio incorporates his new interpretive art which is appropriately named: [RHYTHM] + [SKETCH] into the visuals of his world” tour de force” to create electrifying and highly personalized impressions of sound and art. Terry is probably best know for his work with Frank Zappa, Missing Persons and the progressive rock revival group, UK. However, the artists credits extend much further than that. Starting in the early 70′s the ambitious drummer made appearances with some of the most well known and respected artists in the industry and is perhaps one of the most sought after percussionist around. For tour dates, artist information and some great video promos visit Terry’s site: TerryBozzioArt .com & Terry Bozzio.com.

Please enjoy a conversation with Terry!

LBFH: Terry, Your rig has grown into what has to be one of the most sophisticated in use today. Is this a self creation or have you collaborated with others to bring this “sound sculpture” to life?
TB: It’s my ideas and a lot of personal labor! But of course it’s possible because of the generous support of DW Drums, Sabian Cymbals & my other sponsors.

LBFH: Your performances now incorporate a lot of electronic, computer and visual technologies, Is this tricky to work with live?
TB: It’s all pretty fail safe. I spend a lot of time making things easy for me & my techs who set up and move it. Any ambient music loops are in an iPod & the Roland midi system w/ Pintech triggers is probably the most complex signal chain. But it’s very reliable.

For the rest of the interview, please visit the Local Band for Hire website!

NC Americana Acoustic Duo The Everydays Release Highly Anticipated Debut CD

Asheville, NC – Much to the excitement of Americana music fans worldwide, the highly anticipated debut CD by The Everyday’s has been released! The Everydays, from Black Mountain, North Carolina, is the collaborative effort between singer-songwriters Tim Marsh and David Zoll. Both musicians also maintain membership in several area acts including Chalwa, Asheville Horns and Bayou Diesel. Tim Marsh and David Zoll also perform as solo acts under their respective names. The album was recorded and engineered by J Ferris at Discfunctinonal Family studios in Asheville, NC.

Says David, “This album for us is just a collection of tunes played and recorded in a live, bare-bones style. Some we wrote individually, some together, and some learned and recorded on the spot. That was part of the fun. It started more as just having a good time playing some songs at our friend J Ferris’s studio. The more we listened back, the more we thought we might have something. We were really proud of the few co-writes and the arrangements. It started as a demo, then an EP, and eventually we decided to release a ten-track album.”

The Everydays grew from the common musical interests of Marsh and Zoll who first performed together in an electric band featuring Marsh’s compositions. A love for acoustic roots music and vocal harmony lead the pair to form The Everydays, turning towards a simpler, more focused sound. The duo’s musical influences range from Doc Watson, Clarence White and The Beatles to Simon & Garfunkel, CS&N, and the Grateful Dead.

“Meet The Everydays, the sweeter, subtler side of two local rockers; sincere songs with seventies swagger and timeless musicianship” – Laura Blackley, WNCW Host of Local Color

“A finely crafted album…moody and textural, showcasing Zoll and Marsh’s tasteful and complimentary guitar and vocal stylings.” – Alli Marshell, Mountain Xpress

“The Everydays have created satisfyingly sincere songs, sung by soul-siblings with stirring stories to share”. -Jonathan Scales, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra

The Everydays are currently performing in support of their self-titled debut, which has been receiving substantial airplay on 88.7 WNCW in Spindale, NC. In closing David has this to convey, “Love. Listen. Enjoy the tunes and the delivery. Dynamics. We feel like the real message will be delivered with our next album, which is already in the works.”

2. Waiting
3. So I Leave It To You

Nik Turner’s Hawkwind To Tour North America With Witch Mountain And Hedersleben This Summer/Fall 2014!

Los Angeles, CA – In the spirit of the critically acclaimed and historic ‘Space Ritual’ tour of 1973, Nik Turner’s Hawkwind plan to blow minds on their sonic and visually stimulating journey on their 2014 North American tour with Portland’s own Witch Mountain and SF bay area Krautrockers Hedersleben. Starting in August, this package tour is not to be missed by anyone, in hopes to enlighten and inspire both people who have witnessed last year’s tour or any of Nik’s tours prior and the first timers, bringing sonic traditions of old to the forefront of 2014. Attendees and Nik Turner’s Hawkind fans will not be disappointed. Though staying true to the spirit of Space Ritual as a concept, don’t be surprised to hear other classics, songs off of the 2013 release ‘Space Gypsy’ album and perhaps a new song or two as Nik Turner prepares to return to the studio after the tour. Nik also has a new fusion project forthcoming featuring Billy Cobham and Chris Poland (Megadeth) later this year.

“This tour is the essence of space-rock, the extra-terrestrial, inter-galactic, orgasmic embodiment of the loving and healing vibrations, and the rocking music of the spheres, flame on, one love.” – Nik Turner

“Witch Mountain is thrilled to follow up its Summer tour of Europe with the release of latest album Mobile of Angels, and tour in support of the legendary Nik Turner’s Hawkwind. We feel sure that our music will be ‘out there’ enough to reach the heads, and Nik Turner and co will sufficiently rock our fans in turn. It’s a match made in Hell and we can’t wait to hit the road.”

Hedersleben

Year 1 report…“It was the same time last year that Hedersleben accompanied Nik Turner on a space trek around the USA promoting their debut album ‘Upgoer’. Since then the crew have not been resting on their cosmic sofa rather they’ve pressed on to new and exciting ventures, including completing the next Brainticket album as the legendary Joel Vandroogenbroeck’s side-kicks (including many writing credits), launched their first headline tour of the west coast, preformed a showcase with special guest Captain Sensible from the Damned, (See the Hedersleben Facebook page for footage) and not least recorded their 2nd album ‘Die Neuen Welten’.

‘Die Neuen Welten’, featuring the epic side long “Zu Den Neuen Welten”, (Youtube video scheduled for mid August), celebrates the Kepler mission space telescopes discoveries of more than 2000 exoplanets. DNW also boasts the studio version of stage favorite “(On The Ground) Safe and Sound”. The album is mixed by Jürgen Engler of Die Krupps.

Prog fans look out for further large sections of Hedersleben’s 3rd album, slated for recording early next year, as part of this tours set. ‘The Fall Of Chronopolis’, based on the book of the same name by Barrington J. Bayley, is distinctly more progressive in the tradition of the great early prog concept album. See you in August or September” – Nicky Garratt

Superstars Of Classic Rock Honor The Music & Legacy Of The Doors Feat. Members of Deep Purple, Foreigner, Yes, Rainbow, Mountain, Moody Blues, ELP and Others!

Light my Fire CoverRBG med res

For Immediate Release

Superstars Of Classic Rock Honor The Music & Legacy Of The Doors Feat. Members of Deep Purple, Foreigner, Yes, Rainbow, Mountain, Moody Blues, ELP and Others!

Featuring Todd Rundgren, Ian Gillan, Edgar Winter, Steve Morse, David Johansen, Larry Coryell, Mark Farner, Patrick Moraz, Mick Box, Keith Emerson, Lou Gramm, Leslie West, Thijs Van Leer, Steve Cropper, Rick Wakeman, Roye Albrighton, Nik Turner, Steve Hillage, Zoot Horn Rollo and Others!

Los Angeles, CA – A star-studded syndicate of rock virtuosos have gathered together to pay tribute to one of the best loved and most influential bands of all-time, The Doors, on a new CD release titled Light My Fire – A Classic Rock Salute To The Doors to be released by Purple Pyramid Records on June 24th! Produced by the extraordinarily talented Billy Sherwood, the album features brand new interpretations of classic Doors cuts that defined an entire generation, songs such as “Light My Fire,” “Riders On The Storm,” “Break On Through (To The Other Side),” “Love Her Madly,” “L.A. Woman,” “People Are Strange,” and lots more!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear some of The Doors’ peers and prodigies tackle these seminal songs. Not one but TWO members of the quintessential prog rock band Yes, keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman and lead guitarist Steve Howe, joined Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan on the signature song, “Light My Fire,” which as Wakeman explains, “has always been one of those iconic tracks that keyboard players listen to because of the fact that there are so few tracks with keyboard/organ solos on them compared to our six-stringed buddies. It’s also a solo area that is totally open to interpretation so whatever you do is not comparable to the original, so it was an absolute joy to do.” Howe likewise enthuses, “I was delighted to play on this album as The Doors were a band I heard a lot as everywhere I went in the late ‘60s their music was playing, at friend’s, in restaurants, gigs & bars throughout London. I’m sure I saw them play at Middle Earth, a then hip club. Then, when the reissue more recently came out, I got totally back into their music, especially ‘Light My Fire.’”

Another keyboard legend, Geoff Downes, likewise extolled the genius of Doors’ organist Ray Manzarek saying, “It was a real privilege to be asked to participate in this project. Ray Manzarek was one of the pioneers of keyboard playing in rock music, and had a major influence on me and many others. His style was totally unique, and an integral element into what made The Doors sound the way they did.”

Meanwhile, renegade guitarist Steve Morse, of Dixie Dregs fame, recollects that The Doors were “a soundtrack, literally, for some of the most memorable times, good and bad, that I experienced as a young teen. Like many of my favorites, they were adventurous, improvising, unafraid of what the media might say, and all with a sort of lyrical freedom that still stands up today.” The Cars’ lead axeman Elliot Easton proclaims, “I had a wonderful time reinterpreting ‘Spanish Caravan,’” a song Easton found both “challenging and very rewarding!” And jazz fusion Larry Coryell concludes, “The Doors were the unofficial representatives to the world for LA, not ‘Los Angeles,’ but ‘LA.’ Their sound – raunchy, cluttered, sassy, leering, kind of mean, and always horny was the sound of LA/Los Angeles itself. How many times circa ‘65-66 did my first wife Julie and I drive through LA on the freeway listening to, say, ‘Love Me Two Times,’ and think that The Doors were the sound of LA just as clearly as Thelonious Monk was the sound of NYC.”

That sound continues to reverberate outward through both space and time, touching each new generation around the globe and keeping The Doors’ flame burning brighter than ever! Producer Billy Sherwood sums it up when he declares, “The Doors’ music will live on forever, and it’s my hope that we’ve paid tribute to the band in the highest way possible.”

1. L.A. Woman – Jimi Jamison (Survivor), Ted Turner (Wishbone Ash) & Patrick Moraz (Moody Blues)
2. Love Me Two Times – Lou Gramm (Foreigner), Thijs van Leer (Focus) & Larry Coryell

5. Riders On The Storm – Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow), Tony Kaye (Yes) & Steve Cropper (Booker T. & The M.G.’s)

Rush’s Legendary ‘Presto’ Album To Be Released On Limited Numbered Edition Hybrid SACD

RUSH Presto-SACDMockup(1)

For Immediate Release

Rush’s Legendary ‘Presto’ Album To Be Released On Limited Numbered Edition Hybrid SACD

“…arguably Rush’s most original effort ever!”

Camarillo, CA – Rush fans rejoice! Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity will be reissuing Rush’s legendary ‘Presto‘ album on limited numbered edition Hybrid SACD! Rush were never a band known to play the same sort of thing for any extended period, they often pushed the boundaries of rock and their formidable list of albums helped to bring prog to a wider audience. By 1989 a change was inevitable and with their 13th studio album, ‘Presto‘, it was a change for the good. ‘Presto‘ marked the beginning of a transition period, moving away from a sound dominated by synthesizers and toward more traditional rock instrumentation. The synths were toned back while the guitars were brought up to a reasonable level allowing the emphasis to return to the rhythm instruments, resurrecting the groove that Rush maintains so very well.

“A creative rebirth – producing a groove that’s positively infectious.”

Geddy Lee and Neal Peart are in good form, but Alex Lifeson is the real story, he can be heard in grand force and even pulls out the acoustic guitar. Lifeson’s leads in “Superconductor” are brilliant, Geddy Lee does great solo work on “Show Don’t Tell” and Peart’s percussion on “Scars” features a complex tribal rhythm drum pattern in which both acoustic and electronic drums are utilized – a synthesis of the two that’s accessible without compromising. Each of these tracks, along with “The Pass,” reached the top of the Album Rock Tracks charts with “Show Don’t Tell” hitting #1. ‘Presto‘ climbed to #16 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.

Rush made a stab at greatness with ‘Presto‘ and Rupert Hine’s deft production had much to do with its success.
