French Music Legends Magma To Play Select North American Dates Spring 2015!

Magma USA spring 2015 tour poster

For Immediate Release

French Music Legends Magma To Play Select North American Dates Spring 2015!

Paris, France – One of music’s most innovative and eclectic ensembles Magma will be performing select North American dates beginning in April 2015! Swirling riffs in odd time signatures, theatrical choir arrangements, heavy and distorted pulsing bass guitar, bombastic and minimalistic (sometimes both at the same time), dark and brooding, adventurous and angelic, jazzy or classical, but always with the highly innovative and original drums of founder and main composer Christian Vander. On the forthcoming US dates the legendary ensemble will be performing selections of new and classic Magma music!

“MAGMA is happy to return to the United States to play for Americans. We know you are passionate, respectful and curious about music. We find you to be generous and open. It will be a joy for us to see you this year.” – Christian Vander

Magma was founded in Paris in 1969 by Christian Vander, who derived his inspiration from a “vision of humanity’s spiritual and ecological future” that profoundly disturbed him. Vander was a self-taught musician, who received some tips from drum legend Elvin Jones. In the course of Magma’s first album, the band tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the planet Kobaïa. Later, conflict arises when the Kobaïans, who are descendants of the original colonists, encounter other Earth refugees. A distinguished aspect of Magma’s music is that Vander actually invented a constructed language, Kobaïan, in which most lyrics are sung. Later albums told different stories set in more ancient times; however the Kobaïan language remained an integral part of the music. Reportedly, Christian Vander is also highly influenced by the work of jazz legend John Coltrane. “For my work, it is still Coltrane who actually gives me the real material to work on, to be able to move on.,” says Vander.

Audio Fidelity To Release Soft Rock Legends Bread “The Best of Bread” On 4.0 Quadraphonic Hybrid SACD

Bread - Slipcase Mockup

Audio Fidelity To Release Soft Rock Legends Bread “The Best of Bread” On 4.0 Quadraphonic Hybrid SACD

“A true classic filled with rediscovered treasures…!”

Camarillo, CA – With many exciting releases scheduled throughout 2015, Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity starts the New Year off with the release of soft rock legends Bread “The Best of Bread” on 4.0 Quadraphonic Hybrid SACD! This 1973 recording is a great collection of music from Bread, the popular 1970’s band best known for their mellow, smooth, melodic and often mournful tunes. Many of the classic Bread tunes included in this set live on through soft rock stations everywhere.

Lead singer David Gates crooned his way into America’s heart, and starting with “Make It With You” quickly spun off hits like “Everything I Own,” “Diary,” “Baby I’m A Want You,” “It Don’t Matter To Me” and “If.” At times, their songs had a more upbeat feel as with “Mother Freedom,” but they always retain that same soothing blend of soulful lyrics and gentle music. This album covers all the early hits and more delivered with a deceptively breezy tone by one of pop’s purest vocalists.

Audio Fidelity reassembled all the original masters of the tracks that appeared on the album release rather than work from the compiled “Best of…” master thus giving the recording a completely fresh, updated sound.

TRACKS:
Make It With You
Everything I Own
Diary
Baby I’m-a Want You
It Don’t Matter to Me
If
Mother Freedom
Down on My Knees
Too Much Love
Let Your Love Go
Look What You’ve Done
Truckin’

Produced by David Gates
Associate Producer: James Griffin
Stereo CD and SACD mastering for this release by Steve Hoffman at Stephen Marsh Mastering, Los Angeles, CA

Legendary Blues Guitarist Harvey “The Snake” Mandel Releases Early Solo Albums In 6CD Box Set!

Legendary Blues Guitarist Harvey “The Snake” Mandel Releases Early Solo Albums In 6CD Box Set!

Los Angeles, CA – Innovative blues guitarist Harvey Mandel, has had the kind of career that musicians dream about. Most known for his pivotal work with blues rock institution Canned Heat in 1969 & 70 including their legendary performance at Woodstock, Mandel has over the course of his 6 decade career collaborated with music luminaries such as John Mayall, The Rolling Stones, Love, The Ventures and many more! But Mandel’s genius playing truly shines on his solo efforts, which he began releasing in 1968, and continues to release to this day. Now, some of these early solo albums are being made available in a deluxe 6CD box set from Purple Pyramid Records on January 20. The limited edition Snake Box includes 5 classic solo albums each packaged in its own sleeve with original artwork plus a bonus 1968 concert recording and a full-color booklet with in-depth liner notes! Taking its title from Mandel’s nickname “The Snake” given to him by Canned Heat’s keyboardist for his cracked leather jacket and his snake-like guitar licks, this box set is an essential piece for fans of this lethally talented musician.

Harvey Mandel began his career as the original guitarist for Chicago blues legend Charlie Musselwhite, appearing on his 1966 debut album Stand Back!. He then relocated to the Bay Area, performing often at a club called The Matrix, where local favorites like Jerry Garcia and Elvin Bishop would sit in and jam (a recording of which makes up the bonus disc of Snake Box). He then met up with renowned producer Abe “Voco”’ Kesh, releasing his first solo album titled, Cristo Redentor in 1968, which included his extra-terrestrial version of “Wade in the Water,” still a classic to this day. Then the news arrived that Harvey Mandel had replaced Henry Vestine as lead guitarist of Canned Heat, and it was clear that his talents had been noticed by more than just a few musicians. After several tours and 3 albums with the Heat, he was recruited by British blues man John Mayall to be a member of the Bluesbreakers. In 1971 Mandel resumed his solo career, releasing several more albums including Baby Batter & The Snake.

One of Mandel’s most significant session credits was his participation on The Rolling Stones’ 1976 LP Black and Blue. His unique style is evident on the song “Hot Stuff.” When Mick Taylor left the Stones at the end of 1974, Jagger & Co. auditioned various guitarists, among them Mandel and the man who eventually got the job, Ronnie Wood. Following his success with the Stones, he became a busy session player with groups such as Love and The Ventures, and opened for Jeff Beck on his Canadian tour as part of a power trio with Jimmy Haslip, of the Yellowjackets. He relocated to Chicago in the late ‘70s and continued to tour extensively as well as supporting groups such as Roxy Music. Throughout the next 3 decades, Mandel has earned copious praises for both his solo work and his collaborative efforts becoming one of the most influential and best known guitar players of his era. Now’s your chance to own a box set featuring the albums that started it all!

Vintage Rock Interview with Patrick Moraz

patrick_moraz_interview_2014

The Patrick Moraz Interview
(2014)

By Shawn Perry

In some ways, keyboardist Patrick Moraz has attained a scent of mystique since the 80s. The keyboardist who played with not one, but two, top-shelf bands — Yes and the Moody Blues — was fairly visible in the 70s and 80s. Once his membership with the Moodies expired under tenuous circumstances, Moraz sought refuge with his piano, and issued numerous solo albums, rooted very much in classical and jazz modes, far and away from the radio-friendly music he’d made with the Moody Blues.

While Moraz’s credibility and musical contributions have been recognized, it’s only been recently that his place in progressive rock and affiliation with Yes have been reinvigorated through the release of tribute records he’s played on like Light My Fire: A Classic Rock Salute To The Doors and the reissue of Yes’ 1974 album Relayer — the only Yes album Moraz appeared on — in high-definition stereo and 5.1 surround sound.

There are numerous other tribute albums he’s played on, plus other sessions, including some with Yes members, but Moraz also continues to compose and record his own music. In fact, he has a new band with drummer Greg Alban called The M.A.P. (The Moraz Alban Project) that he says he wrote and arranged a majority of the material for. The veil of mystique that once shrouded Patrick Moraz, at least to the public at large, is about to be lifted.

~

Tell me a little bit about your participation on the Light My Fire: A Classic Rock Salute To The Doors CD.

I was contacted several months ago by a very good friend Billy Sherwood, whom I have the greatest respect because he’s a great producer; he’s always around doing all kinds of productions. I probably was one of the very first musicians to be asked to participate in the classic rock tribute. (Laughs) Funny enough, my agent proposed that and asked, “What would you like to play on? You know, you have the choice of all the music.” Of course, I’d like to play on “Light My Fire” because it’s the most known hit by the Doors and it’s their greatest. But anyway, so I think five or 10 minutes later he got back to me on email and said, “Well, I’ve got to tell you, this title has already been taken, so give me another list of titles.” So I started with “L.A. Woman,” of course, and that was it. Then I started working on it, and I worked online, like little sessions are being done like that. I took quite some time to do it, because I also wanted render homage to the Doors and to Ray Manzarek. Funny enough — funny enough, I mean, it’s not funny — but suddenly enough, Ray Manzarek passed just about two weeks, one week or two weeks before I heard that I had delivered the tracks. That was it. The CD came out and it came out actually on the 24th of June, and I really enjoyed listening to it and all the work that had been done. I really enjoyed what Jimi Jamison did singing “L.A. Woman,” especially, and Ted Turner on guitar from Wishbone Ash, and Scott Connor and — funny enough, of course, Billy Sherwood on bass, because the Doors didn’t have a bass player. So it made the whole thing really much more fuller sounding. But I really was very surprised, and shocked to hear that Jimi Jamison had passed. That’s why I did homage on my Facebook and stuff, and my newsgroup and so on, because I didn’t know the guy — I knew of his work, of his voice, of his presence. He was a fantastic singer.

Drummer Dylan Howe To Release Subterranean – New Designs On Bowie’s Berlin

“That’s a top-notch album you’ve got there. Really.” – David Bowie

London, UK – Drummer Dylan Howe, son of YES guitar legend Steve Howe, has recorded a radical new take on the instrumental cuts from David Bowie’s 1977 albums ‘Low’ and ‘Heroes’. ‘Subterranean’ is Dylan Howe’s first studio album in ten years. It is made up of his arrangements of Bowie’s influential music from his ‘Berlin Trilogy’ and has been seven years in the making. Some of the music featured on this album was previewed live at the London Jazz festival in October 2007. This is the completed album and is universally accepted as Howe’s strongest to date. It features some of the best musicians in the UK with special guest Steve Howe playing koto (‘Moss Garden’).

The response to ‘Subterranean’ has been simply phenomenal; it has garnered universal critical and popular acclaim from all corners of the globe with sales to match. The CD is already in its third pressing with the double vinyl well into its second.

David Bowie recently sent a message to Dylan saying; ‘That’s a top-notch album you’ve got there. Really.’ He requested a vinyl copy the following day.

Dylan Howe: “This is the first of my albums on which I’ve really utilized the potential of the recording studio, with multiple sessions and overdubs, really thinking about production, I was making a record this time, not just recording an album. In the past I would be in the studio for a day or two at the most, or just bring a mobile studio to a gig; this time however, the process and result has been a little like the music, kind of cinematic, a feeling of scale and intensity; think the John Coltrane Quartet produced by Neu! mixed by Brian Eno in an air-raid shelter.”

The Guardian: ‘A superb player, inspiring and invigorating.’
London Metro: ‘The thrilling, incisive drumming of Dylan Howe.’
Ronnie Scott’s: ‘Rightly acclaimed as one of the best drummers of his generation.’
Shaun Keaveny, BBC6 Music: ‘Dylan Howe on drums – just superb.’
Ian Dury: ‘A funky little bastard.’
Jimmy Page: ‘You’re playing beautifully.’

Dylan Howe is a British drummer (born in 1969) best known for leading his quintet and other jazz groups since 2002 and his tenures with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Steve Howe and Wilko Johnson, coupled with extensive session work since 1990, playing with Nick Cave, Damon Albarn, Ray Davies, Paul McCartney, David Gilmour, Beth Gibbons, Gabrielle, Hugh Cornwell and Andy Sheppard amongst others.

Recently Dylan played on the no.1 album ‘Going Back Home’ by Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltrey, with sell-out shows at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire and Royal Albert Hall.

This new album (his sixth) is the natural progression from his acclaimed 2010 Stravinsky adaptation ‘The Rite Of Spring’ for piano and drums and Blue Note styled hard bop quintet albums Translation – Volumes 1 and 2.

Uncut Magazine: ‘A beguiling jazz rethink of Berlin-era Bowie – 8/10.’
– Also featured in Uncut’s Top 20 Best Albums of 2014

Mojo Magazine: ‘So majestic…scuffling in musical corners only hinted at in Bowie’s originals. 4 stars.’

Katie Puckrick – BBC 6 Music: ‘It’s stunning. I stopped in my tracks to hear the whole thing – put me into a dream… Album of the week.’

John Fordham – The Guardian: ‘A warm, contemplative treat, subtle, cinematic…The painterly atmosphere is conjured by creative electronics and elegant arrangements. A warm tribute to Bowie, but a jazz album too, Subterranean offers plenty to fans from both constituencies.’

John Bungey – The Times: ‘Brooding intensity is mixed with fluid jazz passages and the ghost of John Coltrane dances through ‘Warszawa’. It’s an imaginative take on defiantly timeless music.’

Phil Johnson – The Independent: ‘4 stars. Succeeds in living up to the source material… subtle reinvention and imaginative twists.’

Blues & Soul: ‘Probably one of the UK’s most important and vital drummers…Subterranean is an audacious and astounding piece of work that should be in every music collection – a real triumph. 9/10.’

Jazzwise Magazine – ‘A splendid recording – gorgeously intimate…A project for which he deserves huge credit. 4 stars”

Along with The Beatles, Phil’s impressive resume includes recording sessions and tours with such iconic music groups and artists as John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, The Eagles and many others. It’s easy to be familiar with Phil Kenzie’s superb sax work. Just recall the soaring solos on Al Stewart’s “Year of the Cat” or “Time Passages” still enjoying favored airplay to this day, or the punchy brass intro to “Jet” by Paul McCartney, or the inspired solo on “The Long Run” from “The Eagles Live” album. In fact, this gifted sax player/arranger has lent his masterful touch to hits by everyone from Rod Stewart to Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks and Rosanne Cash to David Bowie, and in the process amassed some nineteen gold and platinum albums! Phil also holds the world record for the highest note ever played on Alto Sax on a solo on a top ten hit record (entry note on the first solo on “Time Passages” by Al Stewart). A documentary of Phil’s incredible musical journey is in progress and is 99% finished. With 120 minutes in length, it is produced by Harry Jarvis an Independent video producer from Nashville TN.

Phil relates, “I’m originally from the Liverpool area in England and in my first band, The Pressmen, I played many of the clubs made legendary by The Beatles, even occasionally sharing billing with the ‘Fab Four’, including The Cavern and Hamburg’s famous Star Club. So it was totally appropriate that I should be asked later to play on the most classic ‘swan song’ of the century, ‘Let It Be’. This connection continued with my work on recordings for Apple Records, most notably John and Yoko’s ‘Plastic Ono Band’ at Lennon’s home in Ascot and all of the horn section work and solos on George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’ and playing in the massive sax section on ‘Jet’ for Paul McCartney and Wings. Through these sessions, I also worked with such notable stars as Eric Clapton, Steven Stills, Peter Frampton, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, Doris Troy and Billy Preston.

“As a session man, I was doing gigs around London with Manfred Mann’s ‘Chapter Three’, arranging and performing shows for Jack Good’s psychedelic update of Othello entitled ‘Catch My Soul’, finding time to appear on Paul McCartney’s ‘Band On The Run’ album and to be heavily involved in the hit cult classic ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, playing and recording both the show and the movie; supplying the screaming rock sax for Meatloaf’s portrayal of ‘Eddie’. During this time I also worked with Alan Parsons, David Essex, Joan Armatrading, Ian Gillan, Alex Harvey, Leo Sayer, Black Sabbath, Steve Harley, Marc Bolan, Wishbone Ash, Annie Lennox, David Bowie, The Coasters, The Temptations, Arthur Connolly, Mick Ronson, Ian Hunter and Roger Daltrey appearing on his ‘Ride a Rock Horse’ and ‘One Of The Boys’ albums and on both David Bowie’s ‘Diamond Dogs’ album and his wildly inventive television special ‘The 1980 Floor Show’. At this point I was asked by Alan Parsons to record what would become a legendary hit ‘Year of The Cat’ by Al Stewart. In the subsequent tour of America and another hit for Al, ‘Time Passages’, I caught the attention of Rod Stewart and was asked to join his band, recording with Rod what would turn out to be his biggest album to date ‘Blondes Have More Fun’. I would ultimately appear on five albums for Rod including ‘Footloose and Fancy Free’, ‘Foolish Behaviour’, ‘Rod Stewart Truly Live’ and ‘Greatest Hits’.”

Now, much to the excitement of his fans worldwide, Phil is releasing a CD titled ‘A Night With The Cat’. The album, recorded between 1998 and 2008, has never been released before and is an instrumental depiction of the lyrics/story of “The Year Of The Cat” hit single by Al Stewart, in which Phil plays the world acclaimed hit saxophone solo. Titles on Phil’s new CD reflect the lyrics of the song. Phil is backed on ‘A Night With The Cat’ by Peter White “king of the soft jazz charts”and legendary session players Bob Babbitt and Larry Knechtal.

Says Phil, “The album’s listed producers are Phil Kenzie and Michael Snow and the album was recorded partially in Los Angeles and partially in Nashville Tennessee. It was done in my personal recording studios using analog and digital methodology and myself being the recording, mixing and mastering engineer. I am Industry recognized in these fields. My daughter Anna Pauline Kenzie did all the hand drawn and digitally colored artwork for the CD sleeve which is exceptional. Apart from both composition and musical artistic performances by current top ‘Soft Jazz’ star Peter White. There are what well might be the final recording performances from two of the biggest iconic pop/rock session artists of our age, Bob Babbitt ( Motown, “Poppa Was A Rolling Stone” etc) and Larry Knechtel (Bread, The Wrecking Crew, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” etc.). These two legends both passed away in recent years. The album contains a composition and a performance by Larry called ‘Amazing’ which I co-wrote with him.”

In support of his new CD release, plans for Phil’s S.O.S.S (Save Our Sax Solo) tour is currently in the works. The show will premier at Jazziz Nightlife on Jan 15th, 2015 in Boca Raton, Florida.
