Bill Bruford reflects on embarking on a solo career and forming Bruford: “I wanted to play drums in a certain way and if you want to hear them played in that way you’ve got to write the song. You’ve got to control the audio environment in which your drums are going to be heard and once you’re doing that you’re into a solo career. Looking back, the band despatched these tricky little compositions with a smile on its face; with brio, vigour and only a handful of wrong notes. The band was over-caffeinated – short on subtlety but long on the sort of majestic stately themes with antecedents in progressive rock that set it apart from contemporaneous American outfits. We were a rock group with a jazz sensibility, rather than a jazz group with rock leanings.”

Containing the collected works of Bruford on one extraordinary 6cd/2dvd-a box set, “Seems Like A Lifetime Ago” is a magnificent testament to one of the UK’s most inventive and important Progressive Fusion bands.

Featuring 2017 remastered versions of the albums “Feels Good To Me” (1978), “One Of A Kind” (1979), “The Bruford Tapes” (1979), and “Gradually Going Tornado” (1980), the set additionally includes the previously unreleased “Live At The Venue” (from 1980) and the highly sought after “4th Album Rehearsal Sessions” (also from 1980).

“Bruford 1977-1980: Seems Like A Lifetime Ago” showcases the prodigious talents of Bill Bruford, Dave Stewart, the late Allan Holdsworth (who the album is dedicated to), Jeff Berlin and The ‘Unknown’ John Clark.

Says Dave Stewart, “The great thing about Bill is that he’s not just a drummer. He doesn’t just think about what he’s playing…he’s thinking about the whole picture; thinking about soundscapes; what the guitar is doing; the arrangement; the keyboard sounds and so on. He’s got this composer/arranger mentality which was there from the beginning and he evolved through the life of the band. He’s a deep-thinking musician and it was great working with him for that very reason.”

Jeff Berlin adds, “I learned a lot from Bill. Bill was the person who opened more doors for me not only with regards to reputation…he opened up doors to me about sound, presentation, interplay, the elements of a performance, the elements of group interaction. I think it was one of the happiest and musically productive periods I ever had in my career. I was working with fine human beings and with fine musicians.”

“Feels Good To Me” and “One Of A Kind” are available on both remastered CD and DVD-a, the latter featuring 2017 5.1 mixes by Jakko Jakszyk. Says King Crimson’s Jakszyk on remixing “Feels Good To Me” and “One Of A Kind” into surround sound, “I use the original mixes as a guide and Bill handed over the whole 5.1 remix to me. It becomes an immersive experience. I’m not talking about flying instruments around 360 degrees. While that’s possible it’s also ridiculous…it’s all about sculpting the sound into three dimensions. The new versions of these albums sound much bigger, fatter and warmer and whilst I’m keen to take credit for that the reality is that this is Dave Stewart, Jeff Berlin, Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth, and it’s not just about their playing abilities; it’s that they’ve got their sound together and what you need to do is replicate that and not mess about with it.”

London – Pioneering rockers Phil May & Wally Waller (of The Pretty Things) present the highest quality release to date of their collaboration with French playboy Philippe DeBarge. To be released on September 1st by Madfish Records, the album is now remastered and reworked and features bonus tracks and rare photos!

It was late August in 1969 when Phil May and Wally Waller were flown to St. Tropez by Philippe DeBarge (a French wealthy playboy), and taken to the DeBarge family estate – a magnet for the rich and famous of the era, from politicians to film and rock stars. DeBarge had serious money and wanted to make a serious album, with him as the front man. He’d done his research. He knew exactly who he wanted to make that album with. They were The Pretty Things.

At this time, songwriters May and Waller were at their most prolific but they were between albums, between tours. When DeBarge came calling, it was hard to come up with a good reason why not to go, so they went, did the deal and soon penned and recorded Philippe’s project back in London at Nova Studios. And when “S.F. Sorrow” sales picked up, EMI wanted a new album and “Parachute” took over. The Philippe DeBarge project was dropped and didn’t see commercial release until 2009.

Now restored and reworked with rare photos and new liner notes by Wally Waller, this is the finest release of the Philippe DeBarge sessions to date. Released as a CD presented in a digipack packaging with a 16-page booklet.

The Pretty Things created some of the most exciting and innovative records of the sixties and early seventies. Winners of the Hero award at the 2009 Mojo Honours, the band have been name checked over the years by an array of artists ranging from The Clash, David Bowie and Aerosmith through to The Libertines and Kasabian.

Often called America’s answer to Black Sabbath, one of the most unsung bands in the history of US hard rock music, BANG, is back with a new biography “The BANG Story: From the Basement to the Bright Lights”! With the heaviness of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, coupled with the groove of Grand Funk Railroad, BANG released three critically acclaimed albums on Capitol Records in the early 1970s before disappearing for a number of years. 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of BANG’s critically acclaimed debut album and the band is celebrating with the release of their new book! “The BANG Story: From the Basement to the Bright Lights” was written by Lawrence Knorr, Frank Ferrara, Tony Diorio, and Frank Gilcken.

In the summer of 1971, BANG, a trio from the Philadelphia area, decided to take a road trip to Florida to try their fortune. While buying some rolling papers in the Sunshine State, they learned about a Small Faces and Deep Purple concert nearby in Orlando. They showed up at the venue and brazenly declared they were ready to go on stage. The concert organizer asked them to set up and play for him. After a couple songs, he told them they were opening for Rod Stewart and Small Faces. Before they knew it, BANG was playing with Bachman Turner Overdrive, Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac, Ike and Tina Turner, The Doobie Brothers, and even Black Sabbath. Capitol Records signed them, and three LPs were released. Join Frank Ferrara, Tony Diorio, and Frankie Gilcken, as they recall their rapid rise to fame, playing with numerous Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.

The 1971 self-titled debut album “BANG” is considered an important forerunner to the early Doom Metal genre. Undoubtedly one of America’s heaviest ‘proto-metal’ bands from the period, BANG also had a strong sense of melodic power. The band’s versatility and songwriting skills are second to none. Highly regarded as a cult act by many for years, it’s now time for this truly amazing rock band to be enjoyed by a new audience worldwide!

Excerpts from the book:

“Those were the days when everything was experimental,” said Karl Richardson, the engineer. “We were looking for something more reverberant. We didn’t want BANG to sound like everybody else. In those days, records were more like paintings, than photographs. The studio was a palette, and we were always thinking about art—not just taking a picture.”

OZZY Cheesesteak anecdote … ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 1972, BANG was back in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to play with Black Sabbath, who was in the midst of their Master of Reality Tour. Wild Turkey was to open this evening, followed by the boys from Philly. That afternoon, the band was hanging out with Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath. They offered to introduce them to cheesesteaks, having discovered a sandwich shop in town that was attempting to replicate their favorite Philadelphia cuisine. “I’ve never had a bloody cheesesteak,” admitted Ozzy. And so BANG introduced the Prince of Darkness to the delicacy. After chomping on a few bites, he asked, “I have another question for you. What do the fans mean when they are making the “V” signs with their fingers? For our Churchill, it meant victory.” “To them it means one of two things,” answered Frankie. “It either means peace or boogie.” After that, Ozzy would often be seen on stage flashing dual V-signs to all of his audiences, as captured on the cover of their next album Vol. 4.

From 1992 to 2007 and again in 2014 & 2015 she was the drummer in Lenny Kravitz’s band, performing through multiple world tours and hit albums. In 2010, she was part of the all-star line-up performing “Bitches Brew,” a tribute to Miles Davis’ seminal album staged at the San Francisco Jazz Festival and NYC Winter JazzFest.

More recently, Cindy has become the regular touring drummer for Santana. Having met several years earlier at a festival in Europe while she was touring with Kravitz, Cindy first played with Santana in spring 2010, when drummer Dennis Chambers had a previous commitment. “They have a great band vibe. It’s nice to play with people who have grown together, built a sound together, and stayed together,” she says. “When that happens, you can create so many different levels of communication. That’s what they’ve done, and I love reacting with it and being a part of it.”

Electricity onstage generated chemistry offstage—Carlos proposed to Cindy during a July 2010 concert, and they married in December. Looking ahead, they will collaborate artistically as well, on projects that will no doubt reflect their shared passion for improvisation, and belief in the transcendent nature of music. Cindy was an integral part of the new Santana/Isley Brothers release Power of Peace, featuring the song “I Remember,” which she wrote and sings. “To me,” she says, “music is completely spiritual, it’s the way you connect with your higher self, with the universe. It’s also a way to share light with millions of people. They don’t need to speak your language, have your beliefs, or be in the same place you are. The music speaks, it channels good energy, and makes a difference in people’s lives. Carlos and I are both conscious of doing that.”

NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN started his storied career as a drummer with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Narada’s music flows freely from pop, rock and soul, to the rarified realms of jazz, fusion, and world music. With Jeff Beck, Narada wrote and played drums on the seminal album Wired that earned them both their first Gold Album. Walden was an integral part of introducing Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to millions of fans worldwide, producing and writing their breakthrough hits. Billboard Magazine honored him as one of the Top Ten Producers of all time.

In 2016, Cindy connected with her fellow drummer and world-class producer NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN, and together the two have been working on new material ever since. Classic Rock Legends Wishbone Ash Get “Tough & Tender” on North American Fall Tour!

Acoustic versions of beloved classics featured alongside hard-hitting numbers

Wishbone Ash, one of the most influential guitar bands in the history of rock, will offer their North American fans a dynamic concert experience on the 2017 “Tough & Tender” Tour. In addition to the high-powered, all-out rockers the band is known for delivering, the guys will turn down the volume (but not the intensity) and treat audiences to acoustic versions of some of their classic hits.

“A great song is a great song, however it’s delivered,” says bandleader Andy Powell (guitar, lead vocals). “Playing acoustically allows people to hear the ‘bones’ of a song and how it might have been conceived in the first place.”

Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash finds itself in rare company these days. Not many bands are still going strong after nearly 50 years. It takes a serious lifetime of commitment to the craft of making music; but, more importantly, real skill is required to navigate the shifting seas of the music industry, and few know that better than Powell.

“We laid down strong musical roots in the ’70s, and these roots continue to prove productive,” he says. “Also, we nurtured our fan base as much as possible through fan club conventions, newsletters and the like; but this was all given a great boost once the digital age came into being, with websites and social media.”

Through the years the band has delved into various musical genres, from folk, blues and jazz to pedal-to-the-metal rock and electronica. Whatever the style, Wishbone Ash’s hallmark is the distinctive twin-melodic lead guitar interplay that has influenced such bands as Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Iron Maiden and, more recently, Opeth.

True road warriors, each year the band logs around 30,000 miles, roughly equivalent to circumnavigating the earth. “The hours, days and weeks we spend touring and recording results in a close-knit group, for sure,” says Powell. “It allows us to bring a level of intensity to the table that people seem to pick up on and appreciate.”

The fruitful results of near-constant touring are evident on the latest DVD release, “Live in Paris,” recorded in May 2015 during a three-day residency at Le Triton Theatre in Les Lilas, Paris. Powell says, “We recorded three nights of material, including current versions of some classic songs, plus some deep tracks that people won’t necessarily expect.”

The band recently released a four-disc “Road Works” box set, a compilation of four separate shows recorded in Germany and the UK. In October 2015, Powell completed his autobiography, “Eyes Wide Open: True Tales of a Wishbone Ash Warrior,” co-written with Irish music journalist Colin Harper. The book, published by Jawbone Press, has met with public and critical acclaim.

“Our concept was to root my musical story and that of the band’s to the times in which I came of age,” says Powell. “That is to say, relating it to those times, decade by decade, so that the reader could get a picture of how I was impacted by the social and musical trends and how I weathered those changes. We also wanted to keep it breezy and poke a little fun at this music game at the same time.”

In addition to the “Tough & Tender” Tour, Fall 2017 will also see the release of a 32-CD deluxe box set, “Wishbone Ash – The Vintage Years,” on Snapper Music.

Los Angeles, CA – Two very different indie films to be released later this year feature soundtracks that make unique use of prog and space rock music. First up is the thrilling action/adventure film set in the Middle East, 8 Assassins – The Beautiful, The Bad And The Ugly, which features one of the most unusual tracks in the entire oeuvre of UK prog-psych rockers Hawkwind, the haunting “Hassan-i Sabbah,” featuring Arabic singing and some brilliant violin work by Simon House. Also featured on the epic 2CD soundtrack are tracks by Hawkwind co-founder Nik Turner, a compelling live track from experimental German band Faust, prog revivalists Hedersleben, and a host of others! Meanwhile, a brand new sci-fi space horror film The Rift – Dark Side Of The Moon features loads of out-of-this-world psychedelic jams including compositions from the Pink Floyd album that inspired the film’s subtitle performed by the legendary John Wetton, XTC’s Colin Moulding as well as The Doors’ Robby Krieger. Also featured are Hungarian prog rock giants Omega as well as not one but two bands featuring avant garde percussionist Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru. So whether you like your prog rock with a little Mid-Eastern influence or prefer the spacier side, these two soundtracks will have plenty to offer! The soundtrack for 8 Assassins will be available August 18 and The Rift soundtrack will be available September 1.

A passionate and moving tribute to Magma, one of the greatest bands that ever existed!

“To Life, Death and Beyond: the Music of Magma” is a feature film that explores one of the most visionary and innovative music of the last 50 years, Magma. It takes the audience on a journey through several countries where the band has been filmed, fascinating interviews with fans and musicians, including Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Trey Gunn (King Crimson). The film also includes an in-depth interview of the leader of the band, Christian Vander, and various musicians who were part of this extraordinary adventure over a period of more than 45 years.

The film is packed with archival footage and an amazingly beautiful soundtrack is always flowing underneath. It is articulated around 6 chapters, taking the viewers on a journey through Christian Vander’s childhood, his discovery of John Coltrane who became his mentor, the birth of Magma and the different periods of the band. It also covers Christian’s unique approach and philosophy on music and life along with a tribute to the band’s be album, “Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh.” It ends on an inspiring and moving section where fans from various countries share the impact that the music has had on their life.

Written & Directed by Laurent Goldstein, the film was created to be seen and enjoyed by both fans of Magma and people who do not know this music. Christian Vander’s story packs an emotional wallop and is a tremendous source of inspiration for anybody who has a passion in life and wants to realize their dream.

“To Life, Death and Beyond: the Music of Magma” will premiere in Toronto at the Royal cinema on August 20th at 2:00 PM. Magma will be perfoming live at the Mod Club Theatre in Toronto that evening. The film will premiere in Montreal at the Casa Del Popolo on Aug. 22nd at 6:30 PM. Magma will perform two shows in Montreal on August 21 & 22 at the La Sala Rossa. Both film screening events will cost $10. Please note that to attend the concerts seperate tickets will need to be purchased.

Laurent Goldstein produced his first feature-length documentary, “Your Second Fifty” a motivational piece that demonstrates that in spite of prejudices and popular beliefs, there is a life after 50, and it can be amazing! The film was shot over an 18-month period, in 6 countries on 3 continents, and showcases 40 fascinating characters. It has been shown in motivational seminars throughout North America since 2015.

In 2016, he produced – partly thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign – his second feature-length documentary: “To Life, Death and Beyond: the Music of Magma,” a tribute to the cult French progressive rock band.

Chilean Prog Ensemble Aisles To Tour US For The First Time In Support of Critically Acclaimed Album “Hawaii”

Chile – Aisles, the acclaimed South American prog rock sextet, will tour the United States for the first time in their career to play five dates, including the festivals Progstock in Rahway, New Jersey, and Progtoberfest, in Chicago, Illinois.

Aisles will be performing part of their latest record, “Hawaii,” a two-disc concept album about human colonies established in space after the destruction of the Earth. Its twelve tracks explore the dilemmas and challenges that the individual and the human spirit would face in this futuristic scenario. Regarding the theme and sound of the album, guitarist and producer Germán Vergara states: “Without a doubt it’s our most profound work so far. With ‘Hawaii’ we dug deep in search of a concept that could really move us. Our objective was to write music that would emotionally and mentally take us to the place where the events in the album occur: Space.”

With four studio albums and a career spanning twelve years, Aisles have become South America’s most acclaimed prog act of the last decade. London – 10cc/Godley & Creme legend Kevin Godley is starting a PledgeMusic campaign for his highly anticipated new solo album “MUSCLE MEMORY.” What makes this album special, along with being his very first solo album, is that it will be comprised of collaborations between Kevin and, as yet, a cast of unknown musicians submitting instrumental tracks that he can turn into songs.

Write and record with me:

Recently something happened that eclipsed any songwriting techniques I’d learned in 10cc or Godley & Creme. Out of the blue, I was sent 2 recorded instrumental tracks with requests to write melodies and lyrics and turn them into songs. Both tracks came from people I’d never met and still haven’t.

We communicated by email and all I did was load their tracks into Garageband and react to them vocally. Experiencing this kind of remote collaboration and its results has been transformational for me, as I believe I’ve recorded 2 of my best ever songs and “MUSCLE MEMORY,” as I’m calling the album, will be about opening this collaborative door a lot wider.

It’s my first time out fronting a record so it’s exciting and daunting in equal measure but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and with your help I intend to make it count. The idea is to work on 10 new tracks that inspire me and share the copyright 50/50 with each writer or co-writers. It’s that simple.

Just to be really clear…submissions are open to anyone. That’s new and emerging acts through to established musicians. I’ve already had interest from a few significant artists but my selection process will be totally democratic so I won’t be revealing any names until I’ve listened to everyone and everything and begun to select my 10 collaborators.

The timeline of the release will depend on the submissions, but I plan to have the album released in the first half of 2018 and will be posting regular updates along the way to keep you informed of its progress.

Around the album’s release I’ll be opening the door for both creatives and fans to be a part of the album recording process, with live events taking place which you can Pledge to be a part of.

– Each submission must be an original recording made by the submitter in a stereo WAV format and ideally be around 3-5 minutes long.
– All submissions must consist of 100% original content, composed by the submitter. No covers or samples are to be included.

– Audio stems must be available.
– The submission must not have previously been published or included in any other published work.
– The submitter agrees that any submitted work may form the basis of a joint collaboration with KG.
– KG does not guarantee working with any particular party with regards to their submission, but in the instances that he does, the revised/reworked “Collaboration Composition” (CC) will become the joint property of both KG and the submitter.
– All publishing copyrights to Collaboration Content will be owned 50:50 between KG and the owner/submitter of the original material.
– Any publishing income derived from the publishing of or any use of the Collaboration Content, will be split 50:50 be-tween the parties.

Live Experiences:
Workshop: Join Kevin Godley part way through recording the album and add your own voices and sounds to some of the tracks. He will record you, demo his studio techniques and talk guests through the record’s progress. The evening will conclude with an informal Q&A session.

Video Shoot Visit: Visit the set or location during the shooting of a video for a key album track and maybe get the opportunity to appear on-camera as an extra.

Album Playback and Q&A: Attend an exclusive Album Playback with Kevin Godley to hear the finished record before anyone else and take part in an informal Q&A session about the recording of the new album. Date and location TBC.
