Jean-Luc Ponty Interview with AXS

Interview: Jean Luc Ponty’s The Atlantic Years tour coming to the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
By: Kevin Wierzbicki AXS Contributor May 30, 2017

Few players have a resume that can match that of Jean Luc Ponty, and when it comes to violinists, no one can hold a candle to what Ponty has achieved over the last 50 years or so. A player of rock, jazz, jazz fusion and more, Ponty lists Frank Zappa, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stephane Grapelli, Elton John, Chick Corea and Jon Anderson of Yes among his many collaborators. But Ponty has also released an incredible run of solo albums over the years, including many for the vaunted Atlantic Records label.

Ponty has just begun a national tour that’s dubbed The Atlantic Years tour, a venture that’ll see him feature songs from albums like Imaginary Voyage, Cosmic Messenger, Enigmatic Ocean and other albums he released on Atlantic in the ‘70s and early ‘80s. That tour, with all the sidemen who played on those iconic albums, visits the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in Scottsdale, Arizona on June 9. In advance of the show we had a chance to chat by email with Ponty who told us how the tour came about and what he still hopes to accomplish before he retires. Ponty’s commentary below is given exclusively to AXS.com.

AXS: It’s quite the accomplishment to bring together the members of your band from the late ‘70s for your Atlantic Years tour. When the idea struck, did you already know where all of these players were, and did you have to do any cajoling to get any of them on board with the idea?

Jean Luc Ponty: I have always kept in touch with these musicians and there was absolutely no need to cajole any of them.

AXS: How much rehearsal did you have to do to dust off some of the older material?

JLP: We already did an Atlantic Years tour in South America a few years ago, but we had to wait till everyone was available to do it in the U.S., which is the case now. So just a few days was enough to refresh everyone’s memory. But what is special is the fun we experience being together again, almost giving us the illusion that we are still as young as we were. LOL!

Sixties Documentary “Tonite Let’s All Make Love In London” Feat. Pink Floyd To Be Released on CD & Limited Edition Pink Vinyl!

For Immediate Release

Sixties Documentary “Tonite Let’s All Make Love In London” Feat. Pink Floyd To Be Released on CD & Limited Edition Pink Vinyl!

Newly remastered from the original master tape!

London – The British film director and pop promo auteur Peter Whitehead’s kaleidoscopic 1967 documentary is a vivid and controversial snapshot of the height of London’s “Swinging” era.

Featuring interviews with a diverse selection of iconic figures in British and international pop culture – from artists such as David Hockney and Alan Aldridge, through to actors such as Michael Caine and Julie Christie, the author Edna O’Brien, Beat Poet and writer Allen Ginsberg, and Rolling Stones manager and founder of Immediate Records, Andrew Loog Oldham, the movie is rightly regarded as both a celebration and critique of the London “Summer of Love”.

At its heart was a soundtrack album which featured renditions of “Interstellar Overdrive” by The Pink Floyd, “Here Come The Nice” by Small Faces, and contributions from the enigmatic Vashti Bunyan, Brit blue-eyed soulster Chris Farlowe and vocal duo Twice As Much.

Newly remastered from the original master tape, the album brilliantly captures the overheated atmosphere and ferocious pace of the times.

“Tonite Let’s All Make Love In London” is available on 180-gram heavyweight audiophile vinyl (first 1000 copies pressed on pink vinyl)!

Also available on gatefold SleevePac CD and digital download.

Prog-Fusion Ensemble BangTower Returns With Eagerly Awaited New Album “With N With Out”

For Immediate Release

Prog-Fusion Ensemble BangTower Returns With Eagerly Awaited New Album “With N With Out”
– Now Available Worldwide!

Featuring Percy Jones, Neil Citron, Walter Garces, Robby “Pag”, Frankie Banali, and others!

Chicago/Los Angeles – Declassified Records is proud to announce the newest album from progressive fusion legends “BangTower” entitled “ With N With Out” is now also available in retail stores in Japan serviced by Marquee Distribution. The highly anticipated 13 track sophomore album, originally released late December, marks the first full length CD since the internationally acclaimed 2010 debut release, “Casting Shadows”.

Returning to the project are fretless bass guitar legend Percy Jones of “Brand X”, Grammy winner Neil Citron, “L.A. Drum Guru” Walter Garces, and musician/producer Jon Pomplin. In addition, the album also features several guest artists including drummers Frankie Banali of “Quite Riot” and Rodger Carter of “John 5” as well as fretless bassist Robertino “Pag” Pagliari of “Ohm”, Joan Fraley of “The Rave”, Chris Colovus, Josh Greenbaum and Justin Stone.

BangTower was designed from the beginning to explore new musical landscapes by bringing together artists from different musical specialties, disciplines and physical locations to create something exciting and exceptional. When numerous unavoidable and unexpected scheduling issues arose with the core members after production of the new record had started, the concept was expanded to include several other friends of the band as guest musicians to complete the record. The result turned out even better than anticipated and remained true to the BangTower ideal.

By combining digital technology and traditional studio recording techniques, musicians from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Hawaii were able to collaborate, write and record intricate, soulful music with a distinctive and fresh personality that is can be enjoyed numerous times. Compositions that challenged each player’s imagination and style by pushing the edge of their musical “comfort zone”, while remaining familiar and accessible to both the musician and non-musician fan alike. Although each piece of music is an exceptional stand-alone masterpiece, each track remains an integral part of the over-all context and feel of the album, and the BangTower project as a whole.

Critically Acclaimed 1971 Film “Extremes” Feat. Soundtrack By Supertramp And Others Now Available For Pre-Order!

For Immediate Release

Critically Acclaimed 1971 Film “Extremes” Feat. Soundtrack By Supertramp And Others
Now Available For Pre-Order!

London – Available for the first time on CD and DVD, “Extremes” is the 1971 film Directed by Tony Klinger, Mike Lytton. It covers the whole gamut of present day human behaviour, from carefree pop fans bathing nude at the Isle of Wight to withdrawn, pathetic junkies hastening their own deaths with hard drugs. Such is the range encompassed by the so-called “permissive society”, doubly significant because it usually involves young people who have either never known discipline or are rebelling against an overdose of it. They can’t change society so they have no alternative but to drop out from it. In some of the most natural and remarkable film footage ever obtained, Tony Klinger and Michael Lytton have captured a unique cross-section of them going their chosen ways, and talking freely and frankly about doing so. Nothing was pre-arranged, nothing rehearsed: everything was filmed as it happened. Hippies, junkies, Hell’s Angels, alcoholics, drop-outs – all fall into the category of nonconformist minorities.

Accompanying this incredible film is an equally amazing sound track produced by Supertramp, Arc, Crucible and others. The sound track album was released on Deram and is so rare it sells for in excess of £250 and has never being be released on CD before.

Available from Gonzo Multimedia, this DVD/ CD package with an extensive booklet of photographs from the set and sleeve notes by Tony Klinger finally pays justice to this unique film

Tracks:
Arc – An Ear Ago
Arc – Great Lager Street
Crucible – Box Man
Mark McCann – Black Rose
Mark McCann – Refrigerated Warmth
Arc – Let Your Love Run Through
Crucible – Hit It
Supertramp – Surely
Supertramp – Am I Not Like Other Birds of Prey
Arc – I’m A Perfectly Happy Man
Supertramp – Words Unspoken
Crucible – Elvish Queen
Crucible – We Gotta Watch Out

Release Date: 30th June 2017

“Phaedrus” Digital Magazine & Subscription Service Issues Rare & Unreleased PROG Music!

For Immediate Release

“Phaedrus” Digital Magazine & Subscription Service Issues Rare & Unreleased PROG Music!

Carlos Plaza, leader and main composer of Kotebel, is now Chief Editor of a new quarterly digital magazine and subscription service called “Phaedrus.” The new magazine/service provides awareness among the progressive community and specializes in this genre and, among other content, provides a couple of features that are truly unique! Exclusive PROG music at an affordable price!

Phaedrus Music

“Phaedrus” offers original music that is not available for sale anywhere. In every issue, previously unreleased music is published and subscribers can download it in MP3 of WAV lossless. Says music artist and editor Carlos Plaza Vegas, “In this initial ‘Phaedrus’ phase, I’m the composer of all these pieces but as soon as ‘Phaedrus’ gains enough critical mass, I will be purchasing rights for original music from artists that I like. Thus, belonging to the Phaedrus Community will give you access to music that, at least for several years, will not be (legally) accessible by any other means. When the published pieces reach more than 45 minutes, a ‘Phaedrus’ album is manufactured and released. This album is sent to subscribers at no additional cost (not even shipping).” The digital magazine & subscription service is about to release its first album, “Triptych.”

Classics Choice

In this section, selected progressive rock master works are subject to analysis. It is important to highlight that we are not talking about reviews. The objective of these analyses is to submerge the listener into the details of the work. To allow the listener to discover hidden details, to better understand how the piece has been built, the relationship with the lyrics, the integration with the conceptual framework, etc. For the past 20 years or so, Progressive Rock has found a place among scholars. More and more musicologists are choosing progressive rock pieces as basis for research, doctoral and master’s thesis. Many universities now include progressive rock as a course that forms part of music graduate and undergraduate programs. These research papers are aimed at musicians and musicologists and include a lot of technical information that requires a solid music training. These works, as interesting as they are, cannot be fully understood by the average progressive music fan. Carlos explains, “So, what I do as part of these analyses, is to strip from those documents the parts that require profound music knowledge. I select fragments, ‘decaffeinate’ others, create a lot of new material, and build a detailed analysis that can be followed by any progressive music fan.”

Phaedrus has already published analyses of: “Close to the Edge” (2 articles), “Tarkus,” “Starless,” “Supper’s Ready” (2 articles) and “A Passion Play” (part 1). Next publications are: “A Passion Play” (part 2), “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,” “Relayer,”and “Karn Evil 9.”

These analyses renew the listening enjoyment of beloved progressive rock classics but the most important benefit is this: These analyses help to develop listening skills that will enhance your enjoyment of music for the rest of your life!

Other “Phaedrus” sections include:

Kotebel Corner: with exclusive material for Kotebel fans including rare recordings, videos and music analyses.
Articles on a wide range of subjects related to art in general and music in particular.
Album recommendations.

The first album available “Triptych”:

Watch the promotional video: https://vimeo.com/216530750

“Triptych,” Phaedrus Music’s first album, offers a wide variety of styles, from symphonic progressive rock to chamber music. It features Carlos Plaza’s facet as a multi-instrumentalist, accompanied by a host of very special guests, including some very known to Kotebel fans.

The album is named after a three-piece suite whose first movement, “Dawn”, is the original piece from which the Adagio from Kotebel’s “Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble” was based. The album also marks the beginning of a long-term project: to put music to all 22 major Tarot arcana. “Triptych” includes “The Fool”, “The Magician” and “The High Priestess”. The rest will gradually be presented in future Phaedrus Music albums.

Carlos Plaza explains, “ ‘Triptych’ is an album that will appeal to a wide audience of progressive fans. From hard symphonic pieces like ‘Ignition’ to classical chamber music like ‘The High Priestess’, or even Zeuhl (‘Magmatron’ – my tribute to Magma), it covers a wide palette of textures and styles.

“Although the only way to get this album is by subscribing, subscription is so low that there is really very little difference compared to a standard purchase. The most economic subscription is the Semester Option, that costs 16.98 euros per semester (2.83 euros/month). Since you can cancel the subscription at anytime, you can subscribe, request the album, and for only 5 euros more (assuming the average cost of an album is 12 euros shipping included) you will have 6 months to enjoy all of Phaedrus’ private contents and cancel the subscription if you are not interested. The album of course, is yours to keep. So, almost for the price of an ordinary album, you will have a collector’s item.”

You can get the album, and listen to excerpts of all the pieces, visiting: http://www.phaedrus.es/triptych

New PledgeMusic Campaign For Roger Glover’s “Butterfly Ball” 2017 Directors Cut Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set!

For Immediate Release

New PledgeMusic Campaign For Roger Glover’s “Butterfly Ball” 2017 Directors Cut Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set!

Feat. David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord, Ian Gillan, John Lawton, Eddie Jobson, Vincent Price and others!

London – A new PledgeMusic campaign has been started for Deep Purple legend Roger Glover’s “Butterfly Ball” 2017 Directors Cut Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set to be released on Gonzo Multimedia!

“The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast” is a concept album and subsequent live rock opera appearing in 1974 and 1975 respectively, based on the children’s poem of a similar title. The work was originally conceived as a solo vehicle for Jon Lord to be produced by Roger Glover who had recently left Deep Purple. However, Lord proved too busy with Deep Purple and Glover took up the reins on his own. Using his connections, Glover recruited a large cast of noted rock musicians to perform on it, with a different vocalist for each character, including David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.

On 16 October 1975, a one-off performance at the Royal Albert Hall took place. Again it had a star-studded cast of rock musicians, most notably Ian Gillan who was drafted in at the last minute and received a standing ovation on his entrance. He replaced an unavailable Ronnie James Dio who had commitments with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow (although Dio did eventually get to perform the song at the Royal Albert Hall in 1999 as the guest of Deep Purple). Gillan had not performed since leaving Deep Purple in 1973. Also notable was the appearance of Twiggy as singer and actress and Vincent Price as narrator. Apart from most of the musicians involved in the studio recording, the concert also featured Jon Lord. The live concert was filmed and released in 1976 produced and directed by Tony Klinger.

Tony Klinger is thrilled with the quality of the creation of this Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set which includes Double DVD (original film + 2017, re-edit, remaster), a Double CD (never released before), Reproduction Press Pack, 5 × 10″x 8″ glossy promotional photos, A3 reproduction Film Poster. Each box will contain a number certificate signed by Tony Klinger.

Indo-Fusion Guitarist Rahul Mukerji To Release Debut Album “Ma De Re Sha”

Baltimore, MD – Indo-Fusion guitarist Rahul Mukerji will be releasing his eagerly awaited debut album “Ma De Re Sha” on May 29, 2017!

Rahul is a guitarist/musician based in Maryland, USA. Born in India, he has been performing live for over fifteen years. From dive bars and weddings, to crowds of thousands opening for the B-52s, he has had a varied performing career that has included gigs in Chicago, Boston, Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and India.

Rahul has been featured on a wide array of recordings. His original pieces were featured in the short indie film “Tokyo Confidential”. His music was also featured on DC local tri-state radio and his compositions have been featured in various fractal and traditional animations videos and used in the official score for the Fractal Forums web episodes.

Rahul was featured in the Guitar Player Magazine Editors’ Picks in 2008. He is also a guest Guitar Instructor on the Shred Academy website. In addition to music, Rahul is also an accomplished visual artist and regularly exhibits his work in the Washington metropolitan area. From the traditional to the digital domain, Rahul utilizes a wide array of mediums such as wood engraving, spray painting, pencil sketching, and computer fractal renderings.

“Rahul employs a shimmering acoustic and a bell-like clean tone to craft a light and airy piece that sits ever so nicely in the ‘feel good’ pocket. There are no guitar histrionics or crafty arrangements, here – just breezy melodies kissed by empathetic tones. Its a very pleasurable seduction.” – Michael Molenda, Editor, Guitar Player Magazine

From the source inspiration, to the concept, writing, arrangement, and its actual making, this project is truly a reflection of unity in diversity. This world fusion rock guitar album brings together flavors of Indian music, Middle Eastern percussion, jazz, ambient, rock, and metal. The compositions and the arrangements were inspired by interactions with people from different cultural backgrounds and walks of life, all filtered through the prism of Rahul’s own multicultural upbringing between East and West. The actual making of the music involved coordination with musicians and mixing/mastering engineers living in the US, Germany, Spain, and France.

Says Rahul, “The name for the album, as well as the title song, is derived from a word that a friend’s daughter used to exclaim at every occasion she could find. No one quite knows what it means, but she made it up herself and she just loved clamoring it with conviction and glee. This project is similar, as it’s a deeply personal statement, and the continuing journey to bring it to fruition has been a labor of love. The title song is dedicated to this little girl and the album name is a tribute to the spirit that the word represents.”

The guitars range from crisp acoustic tones and ethereal tapping soundscapes, to Indian Carnatic music inflected leads, heavy riffs, jazz chord progressions and blazing legato runs. Indian tablas and Middle Eastern percussion augment the rhythm section where Ruben Rubio’s superb bass lines go from anchoring the grooves to adding delightful counterpoints. The album’s wide stylistic palette is a reflection of the Rahul’s multicultural background and influences coming together as something new and distinctly unique.

Says Rahul, “Over the years, I have accumulated a large collection of songs and have posted them on different platforms (Myspace, Reverbnation, Soundcloud, etc.). There were also compositions that my band Iritis could not use because of the variance in style. I had always wanted to release a solo album from all this material, and in 2011, I had the opportunity to start working on this project. My former Iritis bandmate and drummer, Bruce Ng, who is currently in Germany, was enthusiastic about being a part of this undertaking. He became an integral and inseparable part of the journey as the co-producer of the album. In addition to programming drums he also reviewed all aspects of the project: from individual tracks, to the artwork, and any written materials. I can’t imagine this album without his help and am extremely grateful for all he has done and continues to do.

“From a writing perspective, the idea initially was to pick the ‘best of the litter’ from my old catalog and rework and release them as a homemade album for free. But as I started working on the pieces, I found myself composing new stronger material compared to my early work. I’ve always enjoyed the sound of tablas in heavy music and I decided to tailor the songs to that theme. Most of the songs were inspired by people from different backgrounds and walks of life, and my interaction with them. I tried to channel the essence of these interactions and the corresponding emotions into my music”

In closing Rahul has this to impart, “The album was born of multiculturalism and created with help from musicians and engineers in four different countries, over more than 5 years, through thousands of emails. We were all already friends or recommended by friends. It proved to me the importance of forging and nurturing bonds despite any geographic and cultural distances. While making this album, we may not have always been able to completely break through the language barrier, yet ultimately we were able to work through it all, and in music we found our common language. It was unity from diversity.”
