THOUGHT CHAMBER’s mastermind Michael Harris checked in to comment the track as follows: “Musically, the first half of this piece has a very infectious and driving rhythm, and the last half is instrumental and gets quite proggy & cinematic. Lyrically, our main character Avakus has now awakened after his happy dream in ‘Light-Year Time’ and explores the city-like inner design of the ‘Kerakryps’ ship, expressing how much in awe he is in all of it, while also describing some of the adversity that the ship encounters and how he misses his family & friends.”

Los Angeles, CA – As word began to circulate about William Shatner’s newest musical project, the prog rock concept album Ponder The Mystery, critics and fans quickly realized it was a match made, if not in Heaven, then in the most glorious reaches of the galaxy. Shatner is after all an enormously popular and celebrated icon of science fiction fantasy, and no musical genre is as invested in, devoted to or driven by fantasy and the imaginative as progressive rock. And though Mr. Shatner is no stranger to the musical world, what sets this effort apart from previous endeavors is the fact that he co-wrote the album, penning a set of intensely personal lyrics for producer/multi-instrumentalist Billy Sherwood (of the prog rock institution Yes) to compose around. And now, after months of puzzled rumors, probing questions and ponderous speculation, the album is finally ready to be embraced by the general public; it will be released on CD, vinyl and digital formats October 8, 2013.

Joining the two Bill’s on this journey into the mysteries of human curiosity and consciousness is a group of virtuosos from numerous genres and fields, including guitarists Steve Vai, Al Di Meola and Zoot Horn Rollo, keyboardists Rick Wakeman and the late George Duke, saxophonists Dave Koz, Edgar Winter and Nik Turner, as well as The Doors’ own Robby Krieger and country legend Vince Gill. Many of these artists leapt at the opportunity to contribute to Mr. Shatner’s venture, such as Steve Vai who performs on the album’s eponymous single, and declares, “It was an absolute hoot to play on Bill’s track. It’s great to see and hear that after all these years his contributions are still fresh!” Longtime friend Vince Gill contributed acoustic guitars and mandolin to the album and shares this: “I’ve known William for awhile and have worked with him on one of his previous charity events. It was so cool for me to play on his new album. Overall, it really means a lot to be part of projects that William is doing at this point of his life. William is a special person and I really enjoy any chance that I get to work with him.”

Saxophonist Dave Koz offers this assessment of the project: “What I love most about this album is that it feels like all the musicians were in this big top – a sort of three-ring circus…you have all these talented people, each bringing their unique offering to the table. Then there’s Bill, the ring-leader, with a big smile on his face, inspiring us all to bring even more to the party. It was a blast, and I love the way it turned out. Unlike anything I’ve EVER done before. But then again, that’s what working with an icon will get you!”

Finally, Rick Wakeman sums things up nicely: “I’ve never adhered to the assumption that oil and water don’t mix…stir them hard enough and add a few other ingredients and they certainly will mix, and give an interesting and pretty unique result too. So I’m all for Progressive Shatner Rock and it was a pleasure to play on the album and be involved!”

Guitar Legend Steve Hillage to Release New ROVO and System 7 Rock-orientated Album ‘Phoenix Rising’

London, UK – Much to the excitement of music fans worldwide, guitar legend Steve Hillage is releasing a new album in the US with Japanese progressive rock/jam band ROVO on October 8, 2013 on Cleopatra Records. Steve Hillage is widely considered a guitar innovator, and is associated with the Canterbury scene, working in experimental domains since the late 1960s. Besides his critically acclaimed solo recordings, Steve has been a member of the ensembles Khan and System 7. But, he first came to prominence as a member of the multi-national rock band Gong, and appearing on successful albums such as ‘Angels Egg’, ‘You’ and his final album with the band ‘Shamal’. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled ‘Fish Rising’. This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however, Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System 7.

SYSTEM 7 is the music project of Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, presenting a unique combination of tech-house beats and live musicianship, who have had a strong influence on the development of psychedelic ambient and electronica. ROVO are a popular Japanese progressive rock/jam band. They feature two drummers, funky bass and innovative keyboards and are fronted by guitarist Seiichi Yamamoto (formerly with The Boredoms) and masterful electric violinist Yuji Katsui.

Says Steve, “Working with the brilliant rock/jam band ROVO has given me a fantastic opportunity to combine my work as a producer with my lead guitar playing – I haven’t played so many long solos on a record for decades!”

THE ALBUM

After a groundbreaking tour of Japan in 2011 and a successful Tokyo show at O-East, System 7 and ROVO decided to take the project further by recording a Phoenix Rising studio album. The album was recorded in Tokyo in September 2012, and was completed in January and February 2013 with overdubs in Steve Hillage’s London studio, and final mixing in Tokyo. The album will be released on October 8, 2013 in the USA. The first single, “Hinotori”, was released in June 2013 as a digital download (on iTunes etc), a Ltd Edition CD/EP, and now with a brilliant live/animation video on YouTube: http://youtu.be/2R5F3OZO-Z0

Phoenix Rising features original collaborations from System 7 and ROVO. It also includes a new arrangement of “Meeting of the Spirits” by the Mahavishnu Orchestra – a perfect showcase for the album’s astonishing blend of guitar and electric violin.

ALBUM TRACK-BY-TRACK

  1. Hinotori (Album Version) – a reworking of the brilliant ROVO live rock adaptation of System 7’s “Hinotori”, fully based on the live band with soaring guitar and violin solos.
  2. Love for the Phoenix – A techno tour de force loosely based on the classic System 7 track “Habibi” from the first System 7 album (1991) but made with a completely new beat and overlayed with live playing and violin. A powerful emotion is employed that evokes the suffering and spirit of rebirth in Japan’s recent national tragedy, and the heart-based symbolism of the Phoenix.
  3. Meeting of the Spirits – a simplified cover version of the iconic Mahavishnu Orchestra track, showcasing the fantastic blend of lead guitar and electric violin, and also displaying the extraordinary beats of the two ROVO drummers.
  4. Cisco (Phoenix Rising) – an epic live ROVO track in the “Krautrock” spirit of Can and Neu, with one of the trippiest tempo changes of all time, and featuring an intricate middle section composed by Steve Hillage.
  5. Unbroken – an electro/breakbeat track composed by System 7 that starts completely programmed and switches to completely live playing around the same theme, with another Mahavishnu-style guitar and electric violin melody
  6. Sino Dub (Phoenix Rising) – another live ROVO track combined for Phoenix Rising with a techno trance programmed beat in typical System 7 style.
  7. Unseen Onsen – A floating ambient track with lush live playing, composed by Miquette Giraudy in the Mirror System style.

Steve Hillage was recently awarded the “Visionary” Award at the Progressive Music Awards 2013 at Kew Gardens, West London, on September 3rd. Blackburner was founded by Skyla Talon, a Michigan-born Los Angeles transplant who cut his teeth in the music capital of the world in metal bands who toured the country with acts such as Hatebreed and Type O Negative. As touring wound down, Talon began experimenting with electronic dance music production. Inspired by the revolutionary new sounds in Dubstep and Glitch music generated by the likes of fellow metal-head-turned-DJ Skrillex, Talon added an extra dose of heaviness and in an explosion of computer wires, guitar strings and patch cables, Blackburner was born! Previous Blackburner albums have featured guest appearances by Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream, John Wesley of Porcupine Tree, William Shatner, and members of the prog rock outfit Yes. London, UK – British blues-rock legends Blodwyn Pig, featuring original Jethro Tull guitarist Mick Abrahams, have released a new compilation of rare unreleased recordings titled ‘Pigthology’ on Gonzo MultiMedia UK. Along with Abrahams (vocals, guitars), the band featured Jack Lancaster (saxes, flutes, violin, keys and wind controllers), Andy Pyle (bass), and Ron Berg (drums) and was later joined by Jethro Tull’s Clive Bunker on drums. Produced by Mick Abrahams and Jack Lancaster, ‘Pigthology’ features re-mastered recordings of Blodwyn Pig’s most beloved and successful songs “Dear Jill”, “See My Way” and “Drive Me”, along with unreleased live and studio material.

Blodwyn Pig in its first form was a legend in rock history hitting the top of the LP charts in Britain and elsewhere around the world. The band received new recognition and inspiration when the track “Dear Jill” was used in Cameron Crow’s movie ‘Almost Famous’. Many bands credit Blodwyn Pig with being a huge influence at the start of their careers, including rock legends Aerosmith. Through the years several bands have recorded covers of Blodwyn tunes, the most noted being Joey Ramone’s version of “See My Way”.

Blodwyn Pig played alongside Led Zeppelin, The Who, Procul Harem, BB King, Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd and Joe Cocker at the Isle Of Wight rock festivals, and the Reading rock festival. The “Pig” completed two successful American tours, playing venues like the Filmores, numerous universities and the LA Forum. Most of the recordings on ‘Pigthology’ are from this period.

A few notes from Jack Lancaster: “On ‘Baby Girl’ Mick played piano as an overdub, otherwise the track was played live in the studio. ‘Cosmogrification’, this was a reformed Blodwyn with Clive Bunker on drums. We only did a short tour. Clive joined because of Rin Berg’s illness. I play piano on ‘Monkinit’ – I mention this because normally we never used keyboard on tracks.”

Based in Kalamazoo, MI, Mason Roberts is an artist who loves nothing more than the moment onstage connecting with the audience. With vibrato that is reminiscent of Josh Groban and the vocal purity of Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum, Mason’s passionate tenor pierces emotions. His distinct voice is an innate gift that has been honed through more than 10 years of vocal training where he studied voice both privately and through Western Michigan University’s School of Music. He’s been charming listeners since he was a kid, seizing every chance to develop his skill. Mason achieves what few can by pulling together a broad spectrum of listeners.

Los Angeles, CA – William Shatner will be performing his new record Ponder the Mystery in its entirety along with the progressive rock heroes Circa: featuring Billy Sherwood, who produced and co-wrote Ponder the Mystery with Shatner, and Tony Kaye both former members of the legendary prog rock band YES.

William Shatner is a film and TV icon with an intense passion for music which has yielded several solo records including the critically acclaimed Seeking Major Tom. This most recent solo record, Ponder the Mystery, which includes guest artists from the prog and fusion genres such as Rick Wakeman, Al DiMeola, Steve Vai, Robbie Krieger, Vince Gill, Edgar Winter, George Duke, Zoot Horn Rollo and Dave Koz to name a few), expands Shatner’s musical horizons due to the fact that all of the songs are original, written by Shatner and his musical partner in the project Billy Sherwood. The album will be released on both CD and vinyl on October 8, 2013.

This partnership of Shatner and Sherwood has created a vast and expansive artistic landscape for Shatner’s amazing gift of poetry while Sherwood composed the musical backdrop. The record is conceptual in nature: following a man in despair through the setting sun, twilight and finally darkness, and in the process, regains his joy of life.

Both Bills had a vision of taking the record to the stage and performing it live. When it came time to form the band for this event, Circa: was the obvious choice, Sherwood and Kaye have had a long running musical relationship playing on stage together with YES and forming Circa: in 2006. Circa: recently released a new album Live From Here There and Everywhere.
