Bill Nelson Getting The Holy Ghost Across Esoteric 2014

Bill Nelson was and continues to remain a lyrical visionary just slightly ahead of his time.
Brent Black / http://www.criticaljazz.com

In the late 1970’s Bill Nelson was heralded as one of the finest guitarists in England. A member of the legendary British art rock pioneers Be Bop Deluxe, Nelson was unknowingly charting a lyrical course of influence for progressive rock with his technical precision on the fret board and a lyrically inventive course of imagery that continues to inspire today. Quirky, eclectic, at times experimental all fall short in attempting to place this proverbial musical square peg in a round hole. The 1986 release Getting The Holy Ghost Across” has been a rare and coveted gem among collectors and is now getting a second chance at life as a stellar reissue.

Dutch Rock Legends FOCUS’ Hit Song “Hocus Pocus” Featured In New ‘RoboCop’ Film!

London, UK – Focus fans rejoice! The group’s 1972 worldwide hit “Hocus Pocus” is now being featured in the major motion picture ‘RoboCop’ starring Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton. The song, which features the distinctive and virtuosic yodeling by keyboardist Thijs Van Leer, was originally released on the band’s critically acclaimed second album ‘Moving Waves’.

Check out the ‘RoboCop’ promo clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8vuu0ZbvX8

Says Thijs, “A good friend of mine was so lucky to be present at the pre-premiere of the new ROBOCOP and he called me WHILE ‘Hocus Pocus’ was played during the film, shouting, ‘Hey Thijs, they put your genius song on the best sequence of the picture!!! Congratulations!!!!!’ Since that very moment I am crazily happy about this luxurious feeling: as the composer, the yodeller, Hammond-organ player & flautist!! Halleluya!!!”

With their unique brand of progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the ’70s as the most successful and appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. Fronted by founding member Thijs Van Leer, and best known for their hits “Hocus Pocus”, “House of The King” and “Sylvia”, as well as critically acclaimed albums ‘Moving Waves’, ‘Focus 3’ and ‘Hamburger Concerto’, the iconic Dutch music masters are back with their tenth album, which is guaranteed to please their legions of fans!

After a comeback in the early 2000’s, which resulted in the well-received albums ‘Focus 8’ and ‘Focus 9’, the band regrouped with a fantastic new line-up. Along with Thijs van Leer on vocals, flute and keyboards, back on the drums is beloved Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden, who joined the group on their second album ‘Moving Waves’ in 1972. Internationally renowned for his rhythmic skills, Pierre remains a defining factor in the Focus sound. Bassist Bobby Jacobs, who comes from a well-acclaimed Dutch musical family, and guitarist Menno Gootjes, who participated in Focus at an earlier stage, complete the band’s current line-up.

Focus has been performing select shows in support of their forthcoming 11th album ‘Golden Oldies’, which features re-recordings of classic Focus tracks. Thijs explains, “Producing ‘Golden Oldies’ is tricky. Both the die hard fans and the 2014 Focus-members were having doubts about this enterprise, because we didn’t know if the recent recordings would match the original material, notwithstanding the fact that we had so much fun in doing the session, quick, romantic, virtuoso, full of funny moments & profoundness; But… the final mix turns out to be fantastic and we all are proud to release this album at our earliest convenience!!”

Prog Band An Endless Sporadic To Release New Single and Video In Support Of Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 Cruise Appearance

“A wild progressive sonic ride. It’s thrilling to hear progressive rock that is fresh and inspiring. These guys are obviously very skilled and their music is brimming over with youthful creativity and vitality.” – Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)

Los Angeles, CA – One of the most talked about up and coming prog groups of 2014, An Endless Sporadic, is releasing a new single “Spaceship Factory” in support of their upcoming appearance on the Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 cruise hosted by Transatlantic’s Mike Portnoy! The band, comprising of Zach Kamins (guitars, keyboards), Andy Gentile (drums), Tony Solis (guitar), and Eloy Palacios (bass), have also filmed a new video to the single and can be watched here: http://youtu.be/jCe8NcS3yBs

Says Zach, “I composed the main theme for ‘Spaceship Factory’ a couple of years ago with the intention of it being part of an orchestral piece that would eventually morph into a progressive rock piece. I’ve always loved film scores in movies about big space adventures. So, I wrote a piece while imagining landing on an alien planet and coming across a factory building spaceships. When I originally came up with the theme, I wasn’t sure how I wanted to develop the rest of the piece. Now that An Endless Sporadic has reunited, it seemed like the perfect vehicle for this piece.”

The band’s new single will be part of a forthcoming EP that will also include a studio recording of the song “Derpulous” (the band released a demo version of the track a few months ago) as well as brand new material. It is also the 6 year anniversary of An Endless Sporadic’s first EP ‘Ameliorate’, so plans to re-record a couple songs from that EP as bonus tracks are in the works. The group is planning on running a Pledge Music campaign to help fund the recordings.

Says Zach, “We have enough music demoed for a full length album and depending on how the EP does, we might want to repackage the EP as a full length later on. The idea is that because our music has a sporadic nature but also explores theme development, we want to try and find ways to expand on older material while introducing plenty of fresh material.”

Zach and Andy originally formed the band in 2005 in Houston, TX through a series of random jam/improv sessions together. Eventually, Andy moved to Los Angeles to work for Neversoft, while Zach moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. The duo continued to write music together over the internet and eventually their song “Sun Of Pearl” was featured in Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland video game. The track “Impulse” was added as a bonus song in Guitar Hero 3, and the track “Anything” has been featured in Guitar Hero: World Tour as free Downloadable Content in the Neversoft Track Pack. The band has a wide rage of musical influences, which can be heard throughout their work, and include ELP, King Crimson, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Sikth, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Primus, Mr. Bungle and Ozric Tentacles.

“A wild progressive sonic ride. It’s thrilling to hear progressive rock that is fresh and inspiring. These guys are obviously very skilled and their music is brimming over with youthful creativity and vitality.” – Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)

Prog guitarist Roine Stolt, best known for his work with The Flower Kings, Transatlantic and Agents of Mercy, produced the duo’s self-titled, full length album with Jonas Reingold (of The Flower Kings) featured on bass. Roine relates, “A couple years ago I got contacted by an American band to help produce their record. I knew little about them but heard they’ve been into doing music for gaming. They were a dynamic duo called An Endless Sporadic. As soon as I said ‘yes’ I got my mailbox flooded with audio files with a gazillion ‘out there’ ideas. Zach Kamins, who is the main writer, is a young man with a vivid imagination and all the music he writes expose all freedom that I remember from yesteryears prog. Zach and Andy propose that progressive rock can be played even today, by ‘kids’ that could as well be…my kids. They have the relentless energy and the will to go beyond formula and I can see great things coming from the band in the future. Now it helps that they are friendly and fun people too.”

Here’s what the press has raved about An Endless Sporadic’s 2008 debut ‘Ameliorate’ EP and their self-titled, full length release in 2009:

“The whole album is an onslaught of riffs. The band never seams to run out of ideas of original guitar riffs often over layered with melodic leads. But what makes this band unique is more than just their interesting guitar parts linked together by odd time signatures, melodic soloing and chaotic breakdowns. Each song features unique extras that separate them from the rest of the songs on the EP and make everything sound fresh.” – Simon Harris, SCREAM!

“Overall, this is some pretty impressive stuff, 34 minutes of instrumental jazz-fusion, progressive metal, and progressive rock, with equal amounts of chops and well written memorable songs. Expect big things from this outfit folks.” – Peter Pardo, Sea Of Tranquility

“The bottom line with AES’s debut album is to never get too used to one particular tune or motif as it will disappear before you realize how much you loved it…it’s nonetheless a vibrant display of their skills.” – Joe Osborne, Geekadelphia

An Endless Sporadic is excited about their upcoming performance on the Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 cruise, which runs from February 18-22. Others performing are legendary Jon Anderson of YES, Transatlantic, Portnoy Sheehan Macalpine Sherinian, Adrian Belew, Devin Townsend, Spock’s Beard, The Flower Kings, Animals as Leaders, Periphery and many others. Says Zach, “Sixthman ran a competition called Sixthman Soundcheck, where they were selecting three up and coming progressive rock bands to add to the bill. We actually weren’t selected, but we later received an e-mail that Mike Portnoy had a hard time choosing the three bands and decided to add a 5th stage to the cruise. We were selected to play on that stage.”

Audio Fidelity To Release Barry White ‘Can’t Get Enough’ Limited Numbered Edition 180g Vinyl On February 18, 2014

“…slinky, funky and seductive… A unique and timeless piece of artistry.”

Camarillo, CA – Much to the excitement of Barry White fans worldwide, Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity is releasing a limited numbered edition 180g vinyl LP of soul legend Barry White’s critically acclaimed 1974 masterpiece ‘Can’t Get Enough’ on February 18, 2014! ‘Can’t Get Enough’ made Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time! This is the first time Barry White’s music has been given the audiophile treatment! It’s also the first time the lyrics to all the vocals on the record are included, listed on the inside of the attractive glossy coated gatefold jacket.

By the time he hit his stride in 1974 with ‘Can’t Get Enough’, Barry White had firmly established his vocal persona on the contemporary music scene. This is the third in his stellar run of album successes. The album topped the Billboard 200 and R&B charts and peaked at #4 in the UK.

Barry White’s allure lay in his ability to craft beautiful love songs and embellish them with luxurious strings, a great rhythm section, and a gospel-styled female chorus. The combination is never more evident than on the classic title track as well as the song “You’re My First, My Last, My Everything”, an anthem that appealed to White’s pop audience. Both of these uptempo #1 chart-topping tracks were early echoes of the danceable, orchestrated funk stylings that became the sound of the disco era.

In addition to the hits, “I Can’t Believe You Love Me” and “Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It” qualify as two of White’s most fetching slow burners. The album is bordered by “Mellow Mood (Pts. 1 & 2)”, two brief orchestral instrumentals that showcase White’s knack for layered arrangements.

TRACKS:

Side One
1. Mellow Mood (Pt. I)
2. You’re the First, the Last, My Everything
3. I Can’t Believe You Love Me

Side Two
1. Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe
2. Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It
3. I Love You More Than Anything (In This World Girl)
4. Mellow Mood (Pt. II)

Leaders Of The New Psych Rock Movement Pay Tribute To The Original Riders On The Storm, The Doors!

Leaders Of The New Psych Rock Movement Pay Tribute To The Original Riders On The Storm, The Doors!

Featuring The Black Angels, The Raveonettes, Clinic, Psychic Ills, Sons Of Hippies, Elephant Stone, Dead Skeletons and more!

Los Angeles, CA – Doors fans, prepare to have your minds blown all over again! On March 4th, L.A.-based indie label Cleopatra Records will release A Psych Tribute to The Doors, a heartfelt salute to the hometown heroes who put L.A. on the astrological map, legendary psychedelic rock band The Doors! Contributing to this epic tribute are several leaders of psych rock’s next wave of sonic visionaries including Danish indie rockers The Raveonettes, British post-punk revivalists Clinic, and Austin TX psych rock superstars The Black Angels whose fuzzed out version of “Soul Kitchen” is currently available as an “instant gratification” track on the iTunes album pre-order here: http://georiot.co/cnH

Formed at the apex of the 20th century’s most tumultuous decade, The Doors led a musical and cultural revolution, shaking up notions of what rock bands looked like and sounded like. A quartet with electric organ substituting for bass guitar and led by a shaggy-haired hippy/philosopher/poet with model looks, the band released just 6 albums with front(mad)man Jim Morrison, yet those albums contained enough classic songs to inspire and influence a legion of bands. From the sexy tease of “Light My Fire” to the bluesy sleaze of “Love Me Two Times”, not to mention the pioneering experimentations of “Riders On The Storm” and “The End,” the legacy of The Doors endures precisely because their songs transcended time and place, reaching outward and touching artists and musicians generation after generation.

No wonder then that when the call was issued for participants on this tribute album, many – like stoner rock icons Dead Meadow – leapt at the opportunity. “From the very beginning of our band to recording in the hallowed halls of Sunset Sound, where the Doors recorded all of their classic albums, we would listen to the mystical sounds of the Doors for magic. The escapism and dark tunes were a huge influence…It was an honor to be able to reinterpret them…” Montreal’s Elephant Stone likewise enthuses, “When asked to be involved with this tribute I knew I did not want to just play a Doors tune; I wanted to reinvent it…So, we reconstructed ‘L.A. Woman’ as a drone-y psyche tune that maintained the West Coast vibe but with an added dash of Madchester, a sprinkling of Live at Pompeii and swirl of backwards sitar. Mojo rising indeed.”

1. Elephant Stone – L.A. Woman
2. The Black Angels – Soul Kitchen
3. Psychic Ills – Love Me Two Times
4. Dark Horses – Hello, I Love You
5. Camera – People Are Strange
6. Dead Meadow – The Crystal Ship
7. Sons Of Hippies – The Soft Parade
8. Dead Skeletons – Riders On The Storm
9. Wall Of Death – Light My Fire
10. Clinic – Touch Me
11. VietNam – Roadhouse Blues
12. Geri X – Love Her Madly
13. The Raveonettes – The End

MoonJune Records to Release International Debut of Belgian Singer/Songwriter/Pianist Susan Clynes ‘Life Is…’ on February 18, 2014

MoonJune Records to Release International Debut of Belgian Singer/Songwriter/Pianist Susan Clynes ‘Life Is…’ on February 18, 2014

New York, NY – “Life Is…” marks the international debut of Belgian singer/pianist Susan Clynes, on New York based MoonJune Records. This release was compiled from three live concerts done at two different locations, each one with a unique band configuration.

The Archiduc, an historic Art Deco bar in Brussels dating back to 1937, served as the backdrop for two of these performances. The first was done in trio format with Nico Chkifi on drums and Pierre Mottet on bass. The second was a more intimate solo performance at the Library of The Cultural Center of Bree. The third and final performance saw the return to the Archiduc, this time as a duet with Simon Lenski on cello. Each band configuration provided its own framework and pallet of tonal colors for these diverse sound portraits.

“A Good Man” and “Ileana’s Song” make playful use of the drumkit and bass. These clever songs lie somewhere between Slapp Happy-era Dagmar Krause, Elaine Di Falco’s work with Thinking Plague, Annette Peacock and early period Kristin Hersh in her band, Throwing Muses. The chiefly instrumental piece, “Les Larmes”, a composition about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is brimming with emotional expression making excellent use of the cello as a universal human voice.

The distilled and emotive songs for voice with piano accompaniment bring to mind such undervalued luminaries as Laura Nyro and Essra Mohawk. Susan’s piano work runs the gamut from such radio-friendly performers as Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, briefly dipping into Tony Banks-like arpeggiations and cascades, and arriving at the jazz-inflected polytonality of French composer, Darius Milhaud.

“In my dreams the people speak, of who they are, and what they seek”

There are points in your life when you have to go with the moment. You donʼt always know what the consequences will be of such a choice, or if the path you go down is ultimately the right one. Yet in your heart of hearts you sense itʼs the right thing to do. You go with the moment and take that leap into the unknown.

Susan Clynes knows all about going with the moment and taking the leap.

“It was 2004 and I was in the final year at high school and I was attending a jazz summer camp in Libramont in Belgium. I had no clue as to what I wanted to do with my life and although Iʼd played music from a very young age, when it came to thinking about what to study at university, I was thinking about doing something not at all related to music. I didnʼt want to be a concert pianist or a classical composer or that kind of thing. As far as I knew there wasnʼt a school for the kind of music I wanted to do. So, I was probably on the verge of signing up to do something like philosophy or psychology not music. When one of the teachers at the camp heard I was thinking of going in a different direction he told me ʻYou have to study music: if you do it part-time youʼre not going to grow to your full potential.ʼ”

Her first CD, Sugar For A Dream, was released in 2005 (with Ramses Donvil on drums & Sebastien Thomé on bass) and in other circumstances could have heralded the beginnings of a standard singer-songwriter career path; courting the big labels and looking for the big breakthrough. Instead, Clynes followed the advice sheʼd received at the camp and went on to study composition, eventually obtaining her Masters degree at the Ghent Conservatory. The result was the emergence of a far more rounded talent, not only capable of mapping out the emotional geography of the heart and head at a piano in a solo concert, but scoring a viola concerto or guesting with Belgian prog-jazz outfit The Wrong Object.

That kind of open-mindedness is a crucial aspect of Clynesʼ approach and led directly to one of the partnerships featured on this album, another leap into the unknown. “I first saw cellist Simon Lenski with an Antwerp band called DAAU, part of the Rock In Opposition movement playing instrumental chamber rock. I loved what he did and so I called him to ask if he wanted to play with me. With Simon I didnʼt have to worry about explaining what the song needed. He immediately felt all that. Itʼs almost telepathic when we play.” Thatʼs certainly a quality that can be discerned in the exuberant interplay Pigeonʼs Intrusion and the rushing tension created during Les Larmes. “I want to make music that bridges the different worlds of songwriting and instrumentals of compositions and improvisation. I want to talk to the heart but not forget thereʼs also the mind.”

It was precisely these qualities which forcibly struck MoonJune Recordsʼ Leonardo Pavkovic after Clynesʼ husband Antoine Guenet, keyboard player with Univers Zero, recommended that his wife should sing on The Wrong Object’s After The Exhibition, and in March 2013 suggested to Pavkovic that she should ʻjoin the great Moonjune familyʼ. “Antoine is really a driving force behind me and is always urging me to go forward. They often say behind every great man is a great woman but in this case the opposite is more than true” laughs Clynes.

Itʼs impossible not to notice the surging optimism coursing throughout Clynesʼ work in both the instrumental pieces and the songs which make up this album. Though some individuals become cynical, jaded or world weary, those arenʼt descriptions that could ever be applied to this artist. “Life is what you choose to make of it / will you stop or will you grow?” isnʼt just a line from the title track: for Clynes, itʼs akin to a personal manifesto. “I try to put in a positive message but without the songs sounding naive. Itʼs about having perspective and how you handle a situation. Not only about how to make the best of it but see it as an opportunity to make yourself be the best person you can be. You donʼt always have control of a situation but you do have a choice about how youʼre going to respond.”

The writing of the material on this album coincided with two significant events in Susanʼs life; the birth of her daughter, Ileana and the death of her aunt, Yoka. “While I was giving birth, Yoka was being cut open to find brain tumors in her head. She died of a rare cancer which she was born with and didn’t know she had for most of her life.”

Clynes cites her aunt as someone who also was unafraid of going with the moment and taking that leap into the unknown. “She was always very passionate about plants, and just a few pages before finishing her doctoral dissertation, she decided to take a world trip and ended up just staying in New Zealand, founding a herb factory.” Having spent eight months working on the writing of the song itʼs easy to understand why Clynes regards Childhood Dreams as one of cornerstones of the album. “She lived her childhood dreams and taught me to savour each moment as though it might be your last.”

Itʼs eight years since Clynesʼ last album and in deciding to release live performances, sheʼs also putting her instinct for absolute perfection to one side, opting for a more spontaneous approach. “You can spend years making sure everything is just right, over- thinking everything. Obviously every artist can be a little hyper-critical of what theyʼve done and itʼs the same with this album. I notice that there are little things here and there that could be improved. But this is a statement about one moment in time where an artist does as good as he or she can in front of an audience.”

“Itʼs all about going with the moment and taking that leap. With ‘Life Is…’ we take the leap with her.”

Audio Fidelity To Release Classic Alice Cooper Album ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ On Hybrid SACD On February 4, 2014!

Alice Cooper Billion Dollar SACD Mockup

Audio Fidelity To Release Classic Alice Cooper Album ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ On Hybrid SACD On February 4, 2014!

“…one of the best rock ‘n’ roll records of all time!”

Camarillo, CA – Alice Cooper fans worldwide rejoice! Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity is releasing Alice Cooper’s classic album ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ on Hybrid SACD on February 4, 2014! As a bonus, along with the meticulously reproduced artwork, enclosed in every CD is the very collectible replicated ‘Billion Dollar Bill’.

With ‘Billion Dollar Babies’, Alice Cooper refined the raw grit of their earlier work in favor of a slightly more polished sound resulting in a mega-hit album that reached the top of the US and UK album charts. It’s impossible to overstate how popular the band had become by the time their sixth album was released. The album, is brilliant, decadent and encapsulated all the celebrity trashiness of the 70’s only three years into the decade.

Song for song, ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ is probably the original Alice Cooper group’s finest and strongest. The album’s singles “Elected”, “Hello Hooray”, “Billion Dollar Babies”,and “No More Mr. Nice Guy” all became hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Also included are a pair of perennial concert standards – the disturbing necrophilia ditty “I Love the Dead” and the chilling macabre of “Sick Things”.

After the album was released, the band embarked on a tour which broke the US box office records previously held by the Rolling Stones. The show climaxed with a guillotine execution of Alice. The album and the tour made the band into the world’s preeminent pied pipers of teenage trash culture and the most successful rock band ever to be loathed by American parents.

“Other than the original ‘Alice Cooper Band’ being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011, our second biggest achievement was when our album ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ went to Number #1 in all three music trade magazines at the same time in April of 1973. Number #1 in Billboard, Number #1 in Record World and Number #1 in Cash Box. We had hoped it would sell Gold or Platinum as a follow up to the success of our album ‘School’s Out’, but a Number #1 album was something that was totally unexpected. Over the years the title track “Billion Dollar Babies” has become my signature song because of the recognizable drum intro.” – Neal Smith, Alice Cooper drummer and founding member

“I remember we were out on the road when the album finally came out in February 1973. I listened to it in my hotel room and just got this really big smile. I was thinking, ‘It’s amazing, we’re really pulling this off’. The album was very, very unique and very, very different. I was really proud of the songs, especially ‘No More Mr Nice Guy’, ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ and ‘Generation Landslide’.” – Michael Bruce, Alice Cooper guitarist/keyboardist and founding member

TRACKS:
1. Hello Hooray
2. Raped and Freezin’
3. Elected
4. Billion Dollar Babies
5. Unfinished Sweet
6. No More Mr. Nice Guy
7. Generation Landslide
8. Sick Things
9. Mary-Ann

Oak Ridge Boys Ink Deal With Cleopatra Records To Release Their First Ever Live Country Album!

Los Angeles, CA – With a legacy that stretches across 6 decades, encompasses more than 41 million albums sold, and includes numerous iconic hit singles such as “Elvira,” “American Made,” and “Y’all Come Back Saloon,” it’s no wonder that The Oak Ridge Boys are one of the most popular live acts on the circuit today, packing fans in by the thousands and tens of thousands wherever they perform. What is surprising is that the Boys, renowned for their great live shows, have never released a full length, official hits concert album – that is, until now! Cleopatra Records will release Boys Night Out on April 15th, in three formats – CD, vinyl, and digital download – finally giving ORB fans the experience of the group’s well-polished live performance for them to enjoy anytime, anywhere.

To be sure, Oak Ridge Boys fans have been clamoring for a live album of hits for several years now, but as the band explained, “For some reason or another, the time never seemed right.” Then, in early 2013, lead vocalist and producer Duane Allen saw the stars align as the band was able to get its hands on some top quality remote recording equipment, and promptly began capturing performances of their current show dubbed “Boys Night Out.” Night after night, The Oak Ridge Boys wowed audiences across the nation with a set list that packed all of the group’s hit singles and fan favorites into one magnificent celebration. Years of preparation have made such well-loved songs as “You’re The One,” “Thank God For Kids,” and the brilliant “Bobbie Sue” sound even more exhilarating than when they were originally recorded! It might not be quite the same as being there, but it’s thrillingly close!

1. You’re The One

9. Trying To Love Two Women
10. Come On In
