Herald de Paris Interview with Judy Collins

A Paris Conversation with the Legendary Judy Collins
By Al Carlos Hernandez on May 21, 2014

HOLLYWOOD (Herald de Paris) – Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960’s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her presence shines brightly as new generations find solace in her iconic 50 album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to succeed in the music industry for half a century.

She is the Judy of whom the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s 70’s anthem, Suite; Judy Blue Eyes, pays homage.
In March of this year the much-anticipated Judy Collins Live In Ireland, CD/DVD on Cleopatra Records was released to rave reviews. The CD/DVD was recorded during a concert at Dromoland Castle on September 29, 2013, for PBS broadcast. For those who missed the concert, fans worldwide can enjoy this inspiring set of Judy’s most beloved hits along with her favorite Celtic folk songs and stories (including duets with Irish singer Mary Black & NY singer-songwriter Ari Hest, via CD/DVD)

The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her memorable and haunting rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns”, a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical “A Little Night Music”, won Song of the Year at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She’s garnered several top-ten hits as well as gold and platinum selling albums. Recently, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the albumBorn to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins.

Judy began her impressive music career at the age of 13 as a piano prodigy, impressing audiences performing Mozart’s “Concerto for Two Pianos”, but the hard luck tales and rugged sensitivity of folk revival music by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger seduced her away from a life as a concert pianist. Her path pointed to a lifelong love affair with the guitar and the pursuit of emotional truth in lyrics. The focus and regimented practice of classical music, however, would be a source of strength to her inner core as she navigated through the highs and lows of the music business.

Legendary Curved Air Founding Member Darryl Way To Release New Prog Album ‘Children of the Cosmos’

“…a trail blazing rock violinist and composer!”

London, UK – Much to the excitement of prog fans worldwide, legedary Curved Air founding member and violinist, Darryl Way is releasing a new album on Right Honourable Records, via Cherry Red on May 19, 2014.

‘Children of the Cosmos’ is Way’s first prog album in over twenty years and demonstrates his creative view of Progressive Rock, forty years after being one of the early founders of the genre. ‘Children of the Cosmos’ features 12 new tracks showcasing Way’s original compositional, rock violin and vocal skills.

A promo video for the title track has been released on YouTube: http://youtu.be/LSoFBKfV-Vo

Says Darryl, “With ‘Children of the Cosmos’ I have tried to recreate the spirit of experimentation that led to the ‘Progressive Rock’ movement of the late 60s and early 70s. As I did in the early days of Curved Air, I have tried to integrate my classical background with rock music, to create soundscapes that are hopefully both exciting and innovative.”

Way continued, “The lyrics for the songs are my observations of our current environment and the world we live in, echoing some of the issues touched upon in the music of the late 60s. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to pass this way once more and I hope that rock fans will enjoy this album, as much as I did creating it.”

Originally formed in 1969, Curved Air was a groundbreaking progressive art-rock band renowned for their showmanship. Darryl Way was noted for his flamboyant virtuoso exploration of the electric violin. He wrote the music for the Top 10 hit (reached #4) “Back Street Luv” and was a major contributor to three Top 20 albums. With Curved Air he toured extensively, performing in practically every major city in both America and Europe.

After Curved Air Darryl went on to release several critically acclaimed solo albums in both ‘rock’ and ‘classical’ genres. Among these, was his ‘Concerto For Electric Violin’…and now, he will be releasing his highly anticipated new CD ‘Children of the Cosmos’!

TRACK LIST

1. Children of the Cosmos
2. Spooks

Los Angeles, CA – One of the most talked about up and coming prog groups of 2014, An Endless Sporadic, is releasing a new single on the heels of their appearance on the Progressive Nation 2014 cruise hosted by Transatlantic’s Mike Portnoy! The new single, featuring Zach Kamins on guitar, Eloy Palacios on bass, Tony Solis on additional guitar, and Andy Gentile on drums, is titled “Derpulous”; a short instrumental piece about the journey of an alien seahorse in treacherous seas.

“A wild progressive sonic ride. It’s thrilling to hear progressive rock that is fresh and inspiring. These guys are obviously very skilled and their music is brimming over with youthful creativity and vitality.” – Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)

Originally formed the band in 2005 in Houston, TX through a series of random jam/improv sessions by Zach Kamins and Andy Gentile. Eventually, AES’s song “Sun Of Pearl” was featured in Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland video game. The track “Impulse” was added as a bonus song in Guitar Hero 3, and the track “Anything” has been featured in Guitar Hero: World Tour as free Downloadable Content in the Neversoft Track Pack. The band has a wide range of musical influences, which can be heard throughout their work, and include ELP, King Crimson, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Dillinger Escape Plan, Sikth, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Primus, Mr. Bungle and Ozric Tentacles.

An Endless Sporadic’s recent performance on the Progressive Nation at Sea 2014 cruise garnered high praise from those who attended! The cruise, which ran from February 18-22, also featured legendary Jon Anderson of YES, Transatlantic, Portnoy Sheehan Macalpine Sherinian, Adrian Belew, King’s X, Spock’s Beard, The Flower Kings and many others. Says Zach, “Sixthman ran a competition called Sixthman Soundcheck, where they were selecting three up and coming progressive rock bands to add to the bill. We actually weren’t selected, but we later received an e-mail that Mike Portnoy had a hard time choosing the three bands and decided to add a 5th stage to the cruise. We were selected to play on that stage.”

Rock Ensemble Exovex Featuring Members of King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, NIN and Devo To Release Debut CD Fall 2014

Exovex - Dale Simmons 2 med res

Rock Ensemble Exovex Featuring Members of King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, NIN and Devo To Release Debut CD Fall 2014

Greenville, South Carolina – Exovex, arguably one of the most talked about prog ensembles of 2014, prepares to release its debut album ‘Radio Silence’, featuring Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) and Josh Freese (NIN, A Perfect Circle, Devo, The Vandals) on drums. The new project reflects progressive rock icons of the past while staying firmly rooted in the modern art rock genre. To date, two tracks have been released under the Exovex name: “Daylight” and “Seeker’s Prayer”. The tracks are pre-released versions of songs that will appear on ‘Radio Silence’, which is set for an October 2014 release. Both tracks are available for free download on the band’s website.

Exovex is the creation of South Carolina singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dale Simmons. Simmons explains, “The central theme of ‘Radio Silence’ addresses the psychological effects of long term, self-imposed isolation and detachment. It also speaks to personal circumstances that drive us to make life-changing decisions…both good and bad.”

About the Exovex sound, Simmons comments, “I have great appreciation for the work of artists like Steven Wilson, Peter Gabriel and David Gilmour. There are certainly degrees of influence by those artists in my music…some greater than others”. He is particularly influenced by the progressive rock icon Pink Floyd and reverently reflects Gilmouresque melody and phrasing as a guitarist.

As singer, songwriter, guitarist and front man for several bands since the early nineties, Simmons covered a wide spectrum of musical genres ranging from progressive art rock to jazz and funk. The most notable was the South Carolina-based band, Furious Styles. Several songs from their 1997 self-titled debut went into rotation on East Coast commercial radio stations. Polygram Records (now merged with Universal Music Group) took notice, and was working on a recording deal until creative differences caused the band’s demise in 1998.

In 1999 Simmons moved to Europe and would spend the next seven years, refining his songwriting and music production skills. He built a modest studio in his apartment at Chateau d’Uriage (a 13th century castle in the Rhône-Alpes region of France) and began experimenting with sound design. Although only one CD release (‘No Real Direction’) resulted from the expatriate effort, the experience would have a lasting impact on his songwriting and artistic vision. Simmons overdubbed all instruments for ‘No Real Direction’ with the exception of drums, enlisting Chilean drummer Cristian Perez (Patti Labelle) as percussionist. Simmons and Perez co-produced and mixed the project in Perez’s Strasbourg, France studio.

Repatriating to the United States in 2006, Simmons built a new studio and began working on a series of new compositions – some of which would eventually become ‘Radio Silence’.

In 2011, he recruited world-class drummers Gavin Harrison and Josh Freese to play on his new solo recording project. “I asked Gavin and Josh to do whatever they thought would best serve the track, I gave them complete creative control over their contribution to the recording,” Simmons comments. “That unknown creative variable was critical for me because it made the effort a true collaboration. Chance, chaos and the unknown can produce beautiful results if you can just let it happen. That’s more difficult than it sounds”.

This concept of an “unknown creative variable” led Simmons to conceive the name Exovex. He explains, “The name of the project is a simple mathematical function, “x(x)” (pronounced “X of X” or “Exovex”). It’s impossible to know the resulting outcome of the function because the function is undefined. It could be anything.”

The Exovex debut album ‘Radio Silence’ is scheduled for October 2014 release. A special limited CD edition (1000 signed copies) will be made available exclusively through the band’s website.
Subscribe for Exovex email updates at http://www.exovex.com, and stay tuned for the debut album ‘Radio Silence’.

Recorded at the historic Galaxy Club, which opened in 1964 just two doors west of the Whisky in the heart of the Sunset Strip, this brilliant performance features the rare early line-up of the band that recorded the monumentally important debut full-length Heavy: Doug Ingle (vocals, organ), Danny Weiss (guitar), Jerry Penrod (bass), Darryl DeLoach (vocals, percussion), Ron Bushy (drums).

“Every big name act that was in LA came to see us play at the Galaxy,” says Bushy. “There was Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, etc.” Atlantic Records showed up too, signed the band, and sent them into the studio to record what would become the band’s debut album. The set list from this night’s performance included “Possession,” Heavy’s monumental opening cut, and its far-sighted closer, “Iron Butterfly Theme” as well as “Fields Of Sun,” “Gentle As It May Seem” and “You Can’t Win,” all of them indicative of the Butterfly’s most powerful punch. And all of them performed by a band that was about to emerge from its cocoon to become one of the most adventurous, fearless and astounding bands to ever take flight – the mighty Iron Butterfly!

Los Angeles, CA – Acclaimed singer/songwriter Spencer Day returns to his musical roots with his fifth full-length album Daybreak, and his first independent album in seven years. His past two albums were released on the legendary Concord/Jazz label. With Daybreak, Spencer has created an album of signature interpretations of well-loved songs from the 1960’s along with five brand-new compositions written in homage of these classic American tunes.

There was a time, a sound, a feel, and a sensibility that defined the California mid-century experience. Spencer calls Daybreak his “top-down Chevy convertible on the Pacific Coast Highway” album, evoking the breezy feel of a sunny Southern California afternoon. Classics including Groovin, A World Without Love, and Never My Love have been re-imagined and interpreted in Spencer’s trademark honey baritone voice.

Spencer Day is widely regarded for his original songs that blend compelling melodies, smart lyrics and lush arrangements. For Daybreak, Spencer has crafted five new works that blend seamlessly with the cover tunes to create a moving tribute to that special time and place that gave rise to so many musical gems. Audiences around the world have enthusiastically supported Spencer for over ten years at venues as diverse as Birdland in New York, the Hollywood Bowl, Jazz Alley in Seattle, the Pacific Rim Jazz Festival in Manila, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Feinstein’s in San Francisco, Tanglewood, the Craig Ferguson Show and at music venues and festivals across the U.S. and worldwide. Spencer has a widely diverse and enthusiastic fan base in the U.S., Asia, Latin America and Europe.

Missing Tonight is the first single from Daybreak to be released to radio, and it reflects Spencer’s roots in the Great American Songbook, with a contemporary, upbeat twist that has become Spencer’s signature sound. Written with legendary composers Bill DeMain and Larry Goldings, Missing, with its jazzy feel and persuasive lyrics, evokes the excitement of a new relationship and the universal allure of limitless possibilities.

Spencer will tour extensively with his band on his Daybreak CD Release tour beginning May 10th in Georgia and continuing in San Francisco, New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Orange County, Europe, Mexico (2015) and other venues and festivals in the U.S. and abroad.

Mary Sarah Bridges Album Featuring Superstar Duets to be Released by Cleopatra Records on July 8th, 2014

Los Angeles, CA – On July 8th, 2014, Cleopatra Records will be releasing the debut album Bridges by Country newcomer Mary Sarah. On her new album Bridges, 18-year-old singer and songwriter Mary Sarah duets with some of country music’s biggest names on 12 captivating songs. Amazed by the Texas ingénue’s voice and talent, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Vince Gill, the Oak Ridge Boys, the late Ray Price and others all signed on to sing with Mary Sarah on their most iconic hits. Dolly’s “Jolene,” Willie’s “Crazy” and Merle’s “The Fightin’ Side of Me” are just a few of the songs interpreted by Mary Sarah and her A-list collaborators.

Produced by Kent Wells, Dolly Parton’s grammy nominated producer, and overseen by executive producer Freddy Powers, who helped Mary Sarah assemble her dream collaborators, Bridges was moved along by the singer’s keen use of social media. “I’ve been singing since I was 8 years old, touring and posting my performances on YouTube,” says Mary Sarah, who already has amassed 80k+ followers on Twitter. “One day I got a tweet from the Oak Ridge Boys, who asked me to sing at their concert that night acapella impromtu. It was incredible. My love of the legends of country music grew, and that’s how this project was born.” The endorsements didn’t stop there, as Willie Nelson himself agrees that “Mary Sarah is a beautiful young lady with a beautiful voice”.

Now, Mary Sarah is ready for country fans to hear it and connect those who love traditional country with those who follow today’s more polished sound. “I see Bridges as something that spans now and then,” she says, “and brings that music back over to this generation.” Originally scheduled for a May 13th independent release, Cleopatra Records involvement came thru a recommendation to Mary Sarah’s team from none other than the Oak Ridge Boys, who’s current album “Boys Night Out” is enjoying success thru its release on the Cleopatra Records label. Says Cleopatra Records VP/General Manager Tim Yasui, “We couldn’t let this opportunity to work with such an exciting young artist slip away and we felt that given the historic nature of the project a much larger reaching release was worth moving the street date to get it into more fans’ hands. This is a win-win for all her fans and country music at large to have a much wider distribution in place.”

1. Jolene (feat. Dolly Parton)

2. Crazy (feat. Willie Nelson)

3. Fightin’ Side of Me (feat. Merle Haggard)

4. Heartaches By The Number (feat. Ray Price)
