Renowned LA Songwriter Bob Beland Releases Highly Anticipated New Album “Left Of Center”

Mar Vista, CA – Much to the anticipation of music aficionados worldwide, renowned LA songwriter Bob Beland is releasing his new album “Left Of Center” on his own independent label Wrong Way Works! Beland is an American born musician/songwriter from Los Angeles, CA, where he has performed, written and recorded original music from 1973 to the present. His diverse career spans over four decades

ABOUT THE ALBUM:

“Left Of Center,” my new fourth solo album and the third under my own label, came as a surprise to me in 2016 as I had two complete albums of new songs already in the archives that I hadn’t released yet.

Early in the year I had just completed a long project partnering with my ex-Furys band mate, the Legendary Fontenelle DuClaw to co-write, co-perform, co-arrange and produce his first (and still unreleased) solo mini album at my home studio Wrong Way Works. Danny Simon, who mastered Fontenelle’s EP, also helped me retrieve 45 song demos by my buddy Jules Shear from 1973 with 3 reels of tape that I had kept with me for over 40 years. When I went to look for those tapes again I found a few reels of my own stuff. One of those reels had the original 1983 recordings of two songs found on this new album. I ended up using one of them, “It’s Alright With Me Mr. Bob” and the other one, “Off The Handle,” I re-recorded.

“Off The Handle” was a song of mine that Fontenelle and I used to perform in the Furys back in the 80’s but I never recorded a proper version of my own until now. I’m certain that today’s political climate and one unsavory character in particular inspired me to revisit it again and record it.

“It’s Alright With Me Mr. Bob” was recorded with my dear friend the late David Beebe who played drums on many recordings of mine including “Stealing Cars” and “The Bob Beland E.P.” David was the drummer par excellence for Jules & the Polar Bears and Slow Children. It was always a joy to record with David and on “It’s Alright With Me Mr. Bob” we had a particularly fun time recording it in a garage in Santa Monica, CA along with the help two other good friends of mine, Marty Korth on bass, and R&B singer/songwriter Dale Mitchell on vocals. All the guys were completely into accommodating my oddball idea about freedom of expression and the fun of creating that idea still seemed to exist in that recording even after 33 years and some wear and tear. Once I heard it again after Danny Simon retrieved it this year from the old tape I really felt the urge to release it flaws and all. It’s a source of personal satisfaction that I wrote and recorded “It’s Alright With Me Mr. Bob” 3 years before Paul Simon’s African influenced album “Graceland” came out. My only regret is that David isn’t here to enjoy it again but I can close my eyes and still see him smiling, laughing and having a great time while we were putting the song together. It was always that way with David but through all the crazy fun he still delivered a great performance every single time we worked together. I still miss him and I hope he is resting in eternal peace.

“One Bright Burning” is a song I wrote way back in the 80’s but never recorded until now. I came across the lyrics in my notebook and actually remembered the melody! I can’t remember my username and password but I can remember a song I wrote from the 1980’s. Go figure!

And of the new songs:

“Some Friends Of Mine” was originally called “Funky Folks” written on a lark for a friend who was working on a solo album with the working title of “Funky Folks.” I thought, “How the hell do you write a song called “Funky Folks?” So I did for the fun of it and sent a demo of it to my buddy who, much to my surprise, wasn’t that impressed by it (this is in spite of the fact that I reference his nick name AND his wife in the frickin’ song! LOL!). Well, in spite of the rejection, I kind of liked it myself so I decided to retool and record the song with a new title so as not to encroach upon his own record. One man’s loss is another man’s gain and “Some Friends of Mine” seemed to work out for me that way and I’m happy about it for no other good reason than to have my old friend Bobby Pickett playing monster bass on the song. Bobby was Etta James bassist for many years and was an original member of Detective, the first band signed to Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song label.

“Sloppy Joe” and “Who’ll Save The World?” feature The Legendary Fontenelle DuClaw on bass, pipe organ, digital saxes, drum loops and ½ piano.

“Cold” features a dear old friend of mine, singer/songwriter Dan Navarro formerly of the duo Lowen & Navarro. Dan and I go all the way back to the Troubadour and the early 70’s. You’d be hard pressed to find a nicer guy than the Calexico Cowboy. Dan and his partner Eric wrote and recorded many albums together throughout their prestigious 20 year career and hit it big with Pat Benatar’s recording of their song, “We Belong.” Look for Dan to be releasing his first solo album very soon.

“The Lost Highway,” “It’ll Take Overtime” and “Ain’t Goin’ Back To That” are all new songs as well. I hope you enjoy the music and performances on “Left Of Center” and thanks again for listening!

Stick Men Feat. King Crimson Members Release New Video “Prog Noir”

Germany – Hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed new album “Prog Noir”, Stick Men have released a new video of the same name. Stick Men features Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto of King Crimson and Markus Reuter.

Says Tony Levin, “We’re thrilled at the video Ofrin has made for our song ‘Prog Noir’. She’s an excellent artist in her own right, musical and visual, and made the video on her own, then presented it to us. It’s pretty special when you find that your music has inspired others to create something new and special.”

Watch Stick Men’s new video “Prog Noir” here: https://youtu.be/YR78Elff0Qs

Stick Men is a progressive rock band created by musicians with extensive experience playing together. Pat Mastelotto and Tony Levin are the rhythm section of the legendary band King Crimson. Mastelotto is in demand all over the world as the premier drummer for progressive rock. Levin plays in Crimson, with Peter Gabriel, and has recorded with John Lennon, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and others. Markus Reuter is a renowned composer/guitarist who designed and plays his own unique touch style guitar.

Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto, the powerhouse bass and drums of the group King Crimson for more than 2 decades, bring that tradition to all their playing. Levin plays the Chapman Stick, from which the band takes it’s name. Having bass and guitar strings, the Chapman Stick functions at times like two instruments. Markus Reuter plays his 8-string touch guitar – again covering much more ground than a guitar or a bass. And Mastelotto’s drumming encompasses not just the acoustic kit, but a unique electronic setup too, allowing him to add loops, samples, percussion, and more.

The result; audiences are fascinated by watching just three musicians onstage perform their unique compositions as well as wild improvisations and some cover versions of songs by King Crimson, Mike Oldfield, etc.

Before “Prog Noir”, Stick Men have released 4 studio CDs (Soup, Absalom, DEEP, Open) as well as two live albums.

Here’s what the press have said about “Prog Noir”:

“ ‘Prog Noir’ is easily the best album of Stick Men and perhaps best album in this particular sub-genre in recent years.” – Erik Groeneweg, Progwereld

“ ‘Prog Noir’ would not sound out of place heard next to any number of post-1980 Fripp-Crimson LPs with its oddly angled tuneful melodies and slightly askew yet utterly coherent rhythms.” – David Luhrssen, Shepherd Express

“In short, if you buy this album you will have in hand something very original, satisfying and great sound quality. A must for fans of King Crimson and minutes of pleasure for others.” – Profil Prog

“The music is complex and full of strange and unusual sounds all the while still maintaining a toe-tapping approachability. It’s a fun disc to listen to. In summation fans of these guys may be a little surprised at just how likable these tunes are, but if you are new to this trio, ‘Prog Noir’ is the perfect place to start your investigation of these remarkable musicians.” – Jerry Lucky

“ ‘Prog Noir’ is by far the most well-crafted and accessible set of songs Stick Men have written thus far. The fact it manages to be so without sacrificing the members’ astonishing musicianship or penchant for syncopation and odd rhythms is a success in and of itself.” – Cameron Piko, Echoes and Dust

“ ‘Prog Noir’ is an exciting album, in which there is to discover a lot of details. Food for stomach, heart and brain alike, as have the three actually surpassed by stick-point again themselves.” – Thomas Kohlruß, Babyblaue-Seiten

“Sinister, Out-of-the-blue time changes, and peculiar rhythms that will keep you guessing until the very end, Stick Men’s new album is like as I’ve mentioned a film score straight out of a Mystery/Horror film with a strange plot twist. If you love the sounds of King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, and Igor Stravinsky, I recommend ‘Prog Noir’.” – Zachary Nathanson Blogspot

Spirits Burning & Clearlight Feat. Members of GONG, Hawkwind & Clearlight To Release New Album “The Roadmap In Your Head”

Spirits Burning & Clearlight Feat. Members of GONG, Hawkwind & Clearlight To Release New Album
“The Roadmap In Your Head”

London, UK – “The Roadmap In Your Head” is the 13th studio album from the Spirits Burning space rock collective, and the second to feature keyboardist Cyrille “Clearlight” Verdeaux. The album has a strong Gong presence, as it includes performances by four musicians from Gong’s Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy (Daevid Allen, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Didier Malherbe), and four members of the current Gong (Ian East, Fabio Golfetti, Dave Sturt, Kavus Torabi). Clearlight is a project of French songwriter and composer Cyrille Verdeaux that blends classical romanticism and prog-rock experimentation. The first Clearlight album was released under the name “Clearlight Symphony,” in 1974, by British major label Virgin Records. The most recent release was 2015’s “Impressionist Symphony.”

“Spirits Burning is a musical collective overseen by American composer/producer Don Falcone that has released a pluralistic combination of ambient, jazz and full-on space-rock with input from many of the genre’s luminaries. Spirits Burning has become a respected melting pot of the space-rock fraternity.” Ian Abrahams, Rock N Reel, July-August, 2008.

Says founding member and band leader Don Falcone, “ ‘Roadmap’ is a musical journey from the beginning of one possible day to the next, touching different styles of music along the way. Like the previous Spirits Burning & Clearlight album, the songs are primarily instrumental. The new album is also a salute to Daevid and what he has meant to Spirits Burning, as he has been part of every release, except one.” Gong legend Daevid Allen, who sadly passed away in 2015, co-wrote two songs on this release. He sings on the closing track “Roadmaps,” and plays guitar on this track and the opening title track.

There are thirty-five musicians on Spirits Burning’s “The Roadmap In Your Head.” Besides members of the Gong global family, there are some special new crewmembers: Paul Booth (who recorded his part while touring with Steve Winwood), Theo Travis (who has played with David Gilmour, Porcupine Tree, and Gong), Judy Dyble (who provided some autoharp flourishes), and Jonathan Segel from Camper Van Beethoven (who Don invited after discovering he was a Gong fan). Returning crewmembers include: Hawkwind family members Steve Bemand, Nik Turner, and Bridget Wishart, plus Albert Bouchard (BÖC). “The Roadmap In Your Head” was mastered by well known ambient recording artist Robert Rich.

Audio Fidelity To Release Legendary Santana Live Album “Lotus” 2-CD On Limited Edition Hybrid SACD

“…one of the greatest live albums ever recorded and one of the supreme achievements in guitar playing.”

Camarillo, CA – Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity will be releasing Santana‘s critically acclaimed live album Lotus on limited edition hybrid SACD. Lotus is a 1974 live album by Santana, recorded at the Osaka Koseinenkin Hall, Osaka, Japan in 1973. It was originally released in 1974 as a triple vinyl LP in Japan only. The first U.S. release was in 1991 as a 2-CD set. It features the “New Santana Band” and combines that group’s jazz and spiritual influences. Some of the band’s biggest hits are performed, such as “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va,” but it is the extended, intense instrumentals that are the order of the day such as the breathtaking “Incident at Neshabur,” “Every Step of the Way,” and “Toussaint L’Overture.”

Carlos‘ superpowered guitar is mesmerizing, the entire atmosphere is otherworldly, beautiful, modern jazzy and most of all, electrifying. His guitar tone is perfect, each solo has a central rhythmic and melodic structure that was used to express in a moment what can never be repeated. The greatness of Lotus is its ability to take all of Carlos‘ beautiful melodies and expand them each into a whole new creation.

Santana fans know there are “several different Santanas.” This was the MILES Santana, the COLTRANE Santana. This is intense and awe-inspiring music played with so much mind-numbing passion. Carlos’ guitar speaks notes on this recording that are nothing short of extraordinary. He manages to imbue a vibration that cuts right through your soul. Even on the familiar hits, the jazz fusion makes its way into the notes and Carlos delivers a new message. This was the top of Santana’s spiritual-fusion era. Lotus is the Live Santana album that gives other Live albums a bad name. Spectacular, breathtaking, emotional, spiritual…and it rocks!

Nik Turner, Co-Founder Of Space Rock Legends HAWKWIND, Launches A Full-Scale, Coast-To-Coast US Tour!

Los Angeles, CA – Fresh off a whirlwind tour through Europe and Japan, Nik Turner, the inexhaustible saxophone and flute-playing co-founder of space rock legends Hawkwind, will return for another US tour accompanied by up-and-coming kraut/prog rock band Hedersleben. Following what has been widely regarded as the most ambitious album of his career, one that MOJO called “a sprawling but polished album,” Space Fusion Odyssey, Turner continues his astonishing career rebirth with a newly reinvigorated sense of musical creativity and sonic exploration.

Frequently called “The Spirit Of Hawkwind,” Turner was a major creative force during that group’s most critically acclaimed and successful period, 1969-1976. His outlandish costumes, improvised sax and flute playing, and general wild man persona became iconic representations of the band, and we would go on to pen some of their most popular songs including “Brainstorm” and “Master of the Universe.” After leaving Hawkwind, Turner used his newfound freedom to travel to Egypt, where he soaked up the history and culture, and also made a recording of his flute music in the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid of Cheops. In 1985, Turner relocated to the western side of Wales, where he set up a new age community in a fairly rural, isolated area. He has continued to release new music including 2013’s Space Gypsy and 2015’s Space Fusion Odyssey. A brand new track from his forthcoming studio album premieres on a special 6CD box set called Space Rock: An Interstellar Traveler’s Guide. This incredible collection features a diverse sampling of space rock artists young and old including Hawkwind, Amon Düül II, Ozric Tentacles, Gong, Can, Earthling Society, and Hedersleben along with a whole host of others!

Melodic Prog Trio The Raptor Trail To Release New Concept Album “Devil on an Indian”

Brevard, NC – Hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed release “New World”, melodic prog trio The Raptor Trail will be releasing their third album on October 28, 2016! “Devil on an Indian” is a concept album dealing with the internal spiritual warfare that stems from a young man coming to grips with his Native American Indian heritage after being raised in 21st century white Christian morality. A near life ending motorcycle accident in the desert continues a mystical, poetic, and spiritual journey of self awareness and understanding, concluding that the heart of man is inherently evil. Set to 10 songs in three movements that seamlessly segue from one song to another, ending with the apocalyptic demise of the world.

Says guitarist Matt Mayes, “I think I have made 17 albums now in my career. They all have kind of felt like near misses. ‘Devil On An Indian’ is the best one yet. To get the music and lyrics to melodically and conceptually move together for an hour and 3 minutes, through ten tracks, without becoming banal twaddle or bohemic noodling was a challenge. That said, I think the result came out pretty good and I’m glad we finally made this record. It has been simmering for decades.”

The Raptor Trail has been slowly and quietly plotting its course over the last 25 years. Founding members John Meyer and Matthew Mayes had been kicking around the idea of recording something together for decades. Finally in 2014, the planets aligned and the idea actually transcended into a studio recording project which later came to be called The Raptor Trail. The Raptor Trail was actually the first song that Meyer and Mayes wrote together for the project, and it snowballed from there, with “Gravity x Ten” following, and then ten more songs over the course of the next year. The self titled first album, “The Raptor Trail,” was released in May, 2015.

Considering the musical backgrounds of Meyer and Mayes, one might not think the styles would mesh. Meyer coming from a harder edged, heavier guitar style; highlighted by the fact that he tunes his guitar in “D.” And, Mayes coming from more of a progressive bluegrass, jamrock background; highlighted by an instrument called a Guijo (Half Strat, Half Banjo, tuned in open G) But in reality, quite the opposite occurred. Not only did the styles mesh, but their melodic interplay and vast, yet different, musical influences pushed one another out of their respective comfort zones. The result was the creation of some of the most prolific, diverse, and conviction fused progressive rock music ever heard.

Before the project could be completed however, there was needed one addition. Gene Bass, long time musical companion with Meyer and Mayes, was brought on to play all drums and percussion. Gene Bass and John Meyer grew up together in Macon, GA, playing in a number of bands together starting back in 1980. Adding to this storied history is the fact that Mayes and Bass played together for 12 years in pioneer Jamrock band Jupiter Coyote which went on to sell well over half a million records. Adding yet more history to the story is the fact that Meyer and Mayes were roommates back in those days and Meyer was actually the first sound man in that band. Meyer is also the person that came up with the name Jupiter Coyote.

So the evolving path that has lead to The Raptor Trail has taken many turns and twists over the years. But, it has somehow reunited a great and long lasting friendship between three individuals who share a unique musical chemistry and history. The music has largely been recorded in each member’s home studio. Then, simply passing the files back and forth over the internet and ultimately back to Meyer who has been the mastermind behind the production and mixing. The self titled album which was released in May 2015 received a warm reception from die-hard Jupiter Coyote fans, as well as many publications from the Progressive rock side of the scale.

The band released their sophomore album “New World” to critical acclaim in Spring 2016, and unlike most of the mindless, Teflon music produced today, The Raptor Trails’s music is rich and layered, somewhat galactic in feel, with razor sharp musicianship and thought provoking lyrical content.

And now, much to the excitement of music fans worldwide, The Raptor Trail is releasing their new album “Devil on an Indian”!

The Raptor Trail is:
Gene H. Bass – Drums, Percussion
Matthew B. Mayes – Vocals, Backing vocals, Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Banjo, Guijo
John M. Meyer – Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Bass, G strings, Organ, Vocals, Effects

Here’s what the press have been raving about The Raptor Trail:

“Their mix of southern rock with transitory flashes of 70s prog is one classy concoction, curious and commercially minded.” – PROG magazine, UK

“The Prog genre, however, doesn’t cleanly delineate the musical environment that the band explores in this album. With influences like Rush and the Dregs, a mix of sound and melody that flirt with pop, West Coast style vocal harmonies, harmonized guitars with a Southern Rock flavor, and suspended atmospheres where Pink Floyd meets banjo rolls, the band goes beyond all duties and limitations of the Prog genre” – Axe Magazine Italy

“Imagine that the Allman Brothers Band were finally released from their alien abduction, and have returned with their minds melded with non-standard open D tunings, and wielding weapons looking like a banjo welded to a Strat’.” – Dutch Progressive Rock Page (DPRP)

“Billed as melodic prog, I can’t quite escape the feeling that the only reason that tag is being used is because there isn’t a neat little genre bag to drop this band into.” – Sea Of Tranquility

Boston Hard Rockers Neon Alley To Release New Video “That’s How It Is”

Boston Hard Rockers Neon Alley To Release New Video “That’s How It Is”

Boston, MA – Hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, Boston rockers Neon Alley are releasing a new video “That’s How It Is”!

Watch Neon Alley’s “That’s How It Is” video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSv3e44GQqQ&feature=share

A Young Woman wakes on the floor, trapped in a nebulous white room. It’s minimalistic and sparse but evokes the future. There’s only a white cube furniture piece with a VR headset on the center. She waves her hand over the cube and holograms of the band appear behind her (in the style of Star Wars holograms). They begin to play. As the guitar lead begins, she dons the headset and is taken to various spaces in a Virtual Reality world. And in each scene she becomes a different person.

In each scene she experiences what it’s like being in someone else’s body through her avatar. Some bodies are interesting. Other bodies are uncomfortable. So she leaves each scene in search of a better body/persona until she finds herself in an avatar that looks just like her own body except she’s clean, nicely dressed in 50’s retro style. The body fits so well that she begins to dance and rocks out, having the time of her life.

End with her back in the white room as she sits down, sweaty, and removes the VR headset. She laughs. What a blast.

Camera cuts to a WS outside of the room and we see multiple rooms, each with one person. Each person looks dejected, upset or depressed. Except for her.

Says guitarist and band leader Dave Vaccaro, “The video, like the song is about the people we cross paths with and interact with everyday. Kind, clever, smart, slow, inspiring, funny, good or bad. It’s just how people are and that’s never going to change. The only thing that you can control is how you react to them. Like our woman in theVR headset (played by Shannon Ashe), some of the people she becomes she likes. Others she finds interesting, and still others she can do without.

“Wouldn’t it be interesting to be somebody else for a time? Who would you be if you could be someone else for a day?

“Directed by Valdimir Minuty the video is one of several interpretations of the song that the band felt best represented the idea of ‘That’s How It Is’. Since Vlad is an artist as well as a film maker (he does great story boards BTW) he was able to translate the feel of the song in a very basic way that worked quite well given the limited resources we had available to us.

One thing we didn’t want was a typical performance video of the band playing in some dilapidated industrial building. We really like how the video turned out, especially the sci-fi vibe of it. It’s different.”

The live footage was shot all in one day at a studio/sound stage in Allston, MA called Red Sky Studio with post production taking another few weeks for edits and revisions.

NEON Alley is:
David Vaccaro – Lead vocals, guitars, keyboards
Mike McDonald – Bass, vocals
Scott Marion – Drums & percussion

BACKGROUND: David Vaccaro’s story in music has a rare upward sweep. Vaccaro has journeyed from hardscrabble Boston club dates to the 90’s music scene of Los Angeles and creative collaborations with some of melodic rock’s platinum selling vocalists. With the self-titled debut album of his new band Neon Alley (out on DMV Music), Vaccaro revisits that visceral soulfulness of his early days. This collection of originals including a cleverly re-imagined cover is perfectly crafted for sweat-soaked live performances.

And Neon Alley has been doing just that, sweat-soaked live performances in clubs in and around Central Massachusetts, working their live show and earning a reputation as one of the best live bands in the area.

Here’s what’s being said about Neon Alley’s debut album:

“…David carries a talent for carrying a tune, and there are plenty of those reverberating in hummable hard rock fashion. Highlights are carved out in the form of ‘That’s How It Is’, a catchy rock anthem and the dreamy echoes of ‘I Only Want to Be With You’. The cover of ‘Jailhouse Rock’ is another favorite; a refreshing reworking of the classic…” – Daniel Pavlica, therocktologist.com

“This album chock full of guitar-driven modern classic rockers kicks off in fine style with the thunderous ‘That’s How It Is’, and backs it up with the more melodic ‘All I Want’, before that aforementioned cover, a rather unexpectedly ballsy ‘Jailhouse Rock’. Wow, what a brilliant rendition these boys bring to the fore here, which they follow up with the drum-led ‘I Only Want To Be With You’.” – Exclusive Magazine

“Neon Alley, It is loud, it is brash, it is exactly what Classic Rock should be.” – Simon Barrett, Blog Talk Radio

“NEON ALLEY: A solid dose of arena rock in search of an arena, this power trio delivers the kind of classic headbang that will speak for the generation throughout the generations. For teens that go to music festivals where it’s about rocking out instead of seeing and being seen, it’s like the 80s and 90s never left. Hot stuff that raging hormones will totally understand.” – midwestrecord.com

“Grab a copy of this album, put it into your car, roll the windows down and crank it up while it’s still warm out and cruise to your heart’s content.” – Altered Frequencies.com

“The new eight-song release begins with the guitar-riff driving rhythm of “That’s How It Is” which will get the blood pumping.” – JP’s MusicBlog.com
