London – Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of a newly re-mixed and expanded deluxe 3-disc edition of the classic 1990 instrumental album by Genesis founding member and guitarist Anthony Phillips, “Slow Dance.” Regarded by aficionados of Anthony’s music as one of his finest releases, “Slow Dance” is a two part orchestral rock suite which showcases Anthony’s music at his most expansive and imaginative.

This new 3-disc(2 CD / 1 DVD) digipak Deluxe Edition of the album features a newly re-mastered original stereo mix and a 5.1 Surround sound mix by Simon Heyworth (on an NSTC / Region Free DVD), along with a CD of previously unreleased “Slow Dance Vignettes.” It includes a lavishly illustrated booklet that fully restores the original album artwork and features a new essay by Jon Dann.

Says Ant, “ ‘Slow Dance’ was an important album to me because it represented the first time that was I able to do a full-scale album after all the miniatures of the, for me, thrifty 80s! I had stockpiled a number of ideas during those years and finally, due to the promise of an advance from my then record company, Passport, I was able to realise these on the big canvas, as it were. Alongside those ideas, I wrote a lot of new material, helped by the new gear, most which feature on Side 2. I was kindly advanced the money by my management Hit & Run and then….Passport went bust….?!!!

“Album all written but not recorded…! What to do …?! Hit & Run were terrific, didn’t pressurise me and I was able to complete the album, secure a publishing deal with Virgin – which led to my catalogue being realised on CD – so the gamble paid off…Phew !!! But it was veritably a labour of love. Seven months very hard work. No road map for that album. Did it make sense …? One long continuous piece, broken up into two sides…?

“I really wasn’t sure and having finished it, found listening to it unbearable ! Yet years on it has its admirers (one who even says he has not been moved thus by an album since…). So I must have got something right – and in the re-release we have tried to really make the re-purchase worthwhile with the improved sound of the main album, the extras CD and the 5.1. I hope the public agree!”

Anthony Phillips is a composer and guitarist who is known as a prolific writer of music for film and television as well as a recording artist. He was a founding member of the band Genesis alongside Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks with whom he recorded the albums “From Genesis To Revelation” and “Trespass.” After leaving the group in 1970, Ant studied orchestration and harmony externally at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. After passing his LGSM exams, he taught music at Reeds School and Peper Harrow whilst continuing to compose and record in his home studio.

Ant released his critically acclaimed debut solo album “The Geese & The Ghost” in 1977 and since then has created a large and diverse output as a recording artist. As well as album releases such as “Wise After The Event,” “Sides,” “Slow Dance” and “Field Day,” he has to date also released eleven albums in the “Private Parts & Pieces” series and four volumes in the “Missing Links” series. Amongst other projects, he collaborated with Harry Williamson on the large-scale instrumental work “Tarka” and he also co-wrote the stage musical “Alice” with Richard Scott.

Whilst Ant continues to release solo albums to critical acclaim, increasingly his music has also been much in-demand for film and television. Commissions have included scores for both dramas and documentaries and he has written and recorded music for over a dozen Survival programmes in collaboration with percussion virtuoso Joji Hirota, including the award-winning “Land of Dragons” and “Creatures of the Magic Water.”

Ant has also established himself as one of the most prolific and successful composers of library music, with tracks from his extensive output being regularly featured on commercials, films and television series throughout the world.

2014 saw Ant renewing his association with Cherry Red Records via the Esoteric Recordings label who are re-issuing his back catalogue. “Harvest of the Heart,” a five-CD deluxe box set anthology which celebrates Ant’s rich musical heritage by featuring recordings made between 1969 and the present day was released in November 2014 to wide-spread acclaim. Subsequent re-releases have included “Private Parts & Pieces I – IV” (a deluxe clamshell box set of the first four albums in that series) and deluxe editions of the albums “Wise After The Event,” “Sides” and “1984” all of which feature new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes.

Esoteric Recordings also recently released the definitive edition of the 1977 seminal debut solo album by Ant, “The Geese and the Ghost”. The music album could arguably be seen to have begun life as far back as 1969, but in essence it was the result of nearly four years hard work by Anthony, in collaboration with Mike Rutherford (who co-wrote three of the pieces on the record), beginning with a series of recordings made on TEAC 4 track tape recorders, progressing to sessions on the barge studio of engineer Tom Newman. Enlisting the assistance of Phil Collins, John Hackett, Viv McAuliffe, Jack Lancaster and many others, “The Geese and the Ghost” finally appeared in 1977 in America on the Passport label and in the UK on the Hit & Run imprint.

Lauded by many as a supreme achievement, this definitive of “The Geese and the Ghost” has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Simon Heyworth and includes a stunning new 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the album by Andy Myles and Simon Heyworth, along with a CD of demos and early versions of the tracks on “Geese”. The bonus tracks are completed with the addition of both sides of an abortive single from 1973, “Silver Song” and “Only Your Love” (previously unreleased). Both tracks feature Phil Collins as vocalist. This 3-disc clamshell box edition includes a lavishly illustrated booklet with new essay by Jonathan Dann and fully restores the original UK album artwork.

London, UK – The collaboration of the ASIA co-founders, John Wetton and Geoff Downes’ iCon, has led to the formation of Epicon Records (via Cherry Red) and its first release of “Urban Psalm” as a 2CD/1DVD set. The release was planned before John Wetton’s death in January 2017 and is fully approved by Geoff Downes and the Wetton Estate.

The concert was filmed at the iconic St Mary-le-Bow church in London and features a unique set including iCon songs, heritage tracks and the greatest hits of ASIA. This release of “Urban Psalm” is the first in a series of definitive re-releases of the iCon catalogue.

The “Urban Psalm” recording also features Dave Kilminster (Roger Waters, Keith Emerson) on guitars, Pete Riley (whom John called “the best drummer in the world” and played with Keith Emerson alongside Dave), Panic Room’s Anne-Marie Helder on vocals and ELO’s Hugh McDowell played cello.

Of the release Geoff Downes said: “ ‘Urban Psalm’ emerged out of a very special one-time concert featuring the music of John and I. Set in an historic church in London, the concert was recorded and filmed. Concert goers received a DVD as part of their attendance. Few people had the opportunity to see this live and until now has had very limited fan-based distribution.”

The setting was historic and intimate and the film has not been shared widely until now, although fans came from around the world to participate. You’re in for a rare treat!

Los Angeles, CA – It’s a music collector’s dream come true – vintage demo tracks, never heard before, from space rock supergroup Captain Beyond are about to be released on both CD and special limited edition red colored vinyl! For those new to the band, Captain Beyond are one of the most underappreciated gems of ’70s rock. A supergroup of sorts, featuring members of Deep Purple (Rod Evans), Iron Butterfly (Lee Dorman & Rhino Reinhardt), and The Johnny Winter Band (Bobby Caldwell), Captain Beyond released 3 studio albums that caused shockwaves in the music world, the effects of which still ripple to this day.

Legend has it that Duane Allman heard a demo tape of the unsigned Captain Beyond and was so blown away that he all but demanded the band join The Allman Brother’s own label Capricorn Records. The rest, of course, is history but those original demos remained buried by time until just recently when they were uncovered by Captain drummer Bobby Caldwell. Now these are being released as Lost & Found 1972-1973 on June 2 via Purple Pyramid Records. Not only will fans be able to hear the original versions of songs such as “I Can’t Feel Nothing” and “Dancing Madly Backwards” but there’s a special treat for diehard fans: “Uranus Expressway” is a song that has never appeared on any subsequent Captain Beyond release. Lost & Found will be made available on CD in a deluxe gatefold wallet with extensive liner notes by music historian Dave Thompson as well as a limited edition red colored vinyl pressing!

Paris, France – French music legends Magma have released a new remastered version of their critically acclaimed 1974 album “Wurdah Ïtah” on CD! The release includes for the first time, “Wurdah Ïtah Prima Materia,” the Original Demo used for the soundtrack to the film “Tristan & Iseult.”

“Winter 1971. Between two series of concerts, we are pacing in circles like caged animals. Georgio Gomelsky senses the tension in the air and decides to book the little Chappell studio for us for a few days in order to release our pent-up energy. On 3 January 1972, Klaus Blasquiz, Jean-Pierre Lembert, René ‘Stundëhr’ Garber and I enter the studio. Despite the many imperfections of this recording, it remains an essential document to understand the origin of ‘Wurdah Ïtah’ and to feel our frenzy at the time.” – Christian Vander 1974

“Wurdah Ïtah” was recorded in April 1974, just one month before the sessions which produced “Kohntarkosz.” It forms the second movement of “Theusz Hamtaahk,” an epic work in three movements of which “Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh,” recorded a year earlier by Magma, forms the final part. Performed by the core players in Magma at that time – Christian Vander (piano, drums, vocals), Jannick Top (bass), Klaus Blasquiz (vocals, percussion) and Stella Vander (vocals) – “Wurdah Ïtah” is music stripped down to its bare essence. Although a total contrast to the splendour and orchestral power of “M.D.K.,” it nevertheless has just as great rhythmic power and surprising vocal lyricism, unquestionably marked by the claws of Magma!

Interview: Jean Luc Ponty’s The Atlantic Years tour coming to the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts

Few players have a resume that can match that of Jean Luc Ponty, and when it comes to violinists, no one can hold a candle to what Ponty has achieved over the last 50 years or so. A player of rock, jazz, jazz fusion and more, Ponty lists Frank Zappa, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stephane Grapelli, Elton John, Chick Corea and Jon Anderson of Yes among his many collaborators. But Ponty has also released an incredible run of solo albums over the years, including many for the vaunted Atlantic Records label.

Ponty has just begun a national tour that’s dubbed The Atlantic Years tour, a venture that’ll see him feature songs from albums like Imaginary Voyage, Cosmic Messenger, Enigmatic Ocean and other albums he released on Atlantic in the ‘70s and early ‘80s. That tour, with all the sidemen who played on those iconic albums, visits the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in Scottsdale, Arizona on June 9. In advance of the show we had a chance to chat by email with Ponty who told us how the tour came about and what he still hopes to accomplish before he retires. Ponty’s commentary below is given exclusively to AXS.com.

AXS: It’s quite the accomplishment to bring together the members of your band from the late ‘70s for your Atlantic Years tour. When the idea struck, did you already know where all of these players were, and did you have to do any cajoling to get any of them on board with the idea?

Jean Luc Ponty: I have always kept in touch with these musicians and there was absolutely no need to cajole any of them.

AXS: How much rehearsal did you have to do to dust off some of the older material?

JLP: We already did an Atlantic Years tour in South America a few years ago, but we had to wait till everyone was available to do it in the U.S., which is the case now. So just a few days was enough to refresh everyone’s memory. But what is special is the fun we experience being together again, almost giving us the illusion that we are still as young as we were. LOL!

Music Legend Todd Rundgren’s Notre Dame Artist in Residence Mini-Documentary

Rundgren started his Spirit of Harmony Foundation a few years ago to help bring music back into schools – http://spiritofharmony.org. A few months ago he accepted an invitation from Notre Dame University to conduct a week-long Artist In Residence music program, on the condition that it highlight the Foundation.

Notre Dame just completed the following mini-documentary on his week on campus (and off campus):

The iconic songwriter, recording artist, producer and innovator released his critically acclaimed new album “White Knight” on May 12 via Cleopatra Records. The 15-track collection features a dynamic range of original songs and deft studio work by Rundgren, with an impressive array of what he terms “collaborators”, including Dam Funk, Donald Fagen, Daryl Hall, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, Bettye LaVette, Robyn, Joe Satriani, and Joe Walsh.

Chicago/Los Angeles – Declassified Records is proud to announce the newest album from progressive fusion legends “BangTower” entitled “ With N With Out” is now also available in retail stores in Japan serviced by Marquee Distribution. The highly anticipated 13 track sophomore album, originally released late December, marks the first full length CD since the internationally acclaimed 2010 debut release, “Casting Shadows”.

Returning to the project are fretless bass guitar legend Percy Jones of “Brand X”, Grammy winner Neil Citron, “L.A. Drum Guru” Walter Garces, and musician/producer Jon Pomplin. In addition, the album also features several guest artists including drummers Frankie Banali of “Quite Riot” and Rodger Carter of “John 5” as well as fretless bassist Robertino “Pag” Pagliari of “Ohm”, Joan Fraley of “The Rave”, Chris Colovus, Josh Greenbaum and Justin Stone.

BangTower was designed from the beginning to explore new musical landscapes by bringing together artists from different musical specialties, disciplines and physical locations to create something exciting and exceptional. When numerous unavoidable and unexpected scheduling issues arose with the core members after production of the new record had started, the concept was expanded to include several other friends of the band as guest musicians to complete the record. The result turned out even better than anticipated and remained true to the BangTower ideal.

By combining digital technology and traditional studio recording techniques, musicians from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Hawaii were able to collaborate, write and record intricate, soulful music with a distinctive and fresh personality that is can be enjoyed numerous times. Compositions that challenged each player’s imagination and style by pushing the edge of their musical “comfort zone”, while remaining familiar and accessible to both the musician and non-musician fan alike. Although each piece of music is an exceptional stand-alone masterpiece, each track remains an integral part of the over-all context and feel of the album, and the BangTower project as a whole.

London – Available for the first time on CD and DVD, “Extremes” is the 1971 film Directed by Tony Klinger, Mike Lytton. It covers the whole gamut of present day human behaviour, from carefree pop fans bathing nude at the Isle of Wight to withdrawn, pathetic junkies hastening their own deaths with hard drugs. Such is the range encompassed by the so-called “permissive society”, doubly significant because it usually involves young people who have either never known discipline or are rebelling against an overdose of it. They can’t change society so they have no alternative but to drop out from it. In some of the most natural and remarkable film footage ever obtained, Tony Klinger and Michael Lytton have captured a unique cross-section of them going their chosen ways, and talking freely and frankly about doing so. Nothing was pre-arranged, nothing rehearsed: everything was filmed as it happened. Hippies, junkies, Hell’s Angels, alcoholics, drop-outs – all fall into the category of nonconformist minorities.

Accompanying this incredible film is an equally amazing sound track produced by Supertramp, Arc, Crucible and others. The sound track album was released on Deram and is so rare it sells for in excess of £250 and has never being be released on CD before.

Available from Gonzo Multimedia, this DVD/ CD package with an extensive booklet of photographs from the set and sleeve notes by Tony Klinger finally pays justice to this unique film
