A Conversation with Bill Bruford

Mike Ragogna: Bill, your new box set Bruford 1977-1980: Seems Like a Lifetime Ago focuses on just those few years. As the artist, what stands out to you as most important about Bill Bruford and that body of work?

Bill Bruford: The importance it has to me—the beginnings of my efforts as a writer, as a band-leader, as someone ‘getting to know myself’ on my instrument—is incalculable. That, however, may be of little or no importance to the many who attended the band’s frantic live shows from 1977 to 1980 for a beer and an evening out. The way music is received and the meaning it carries for those who consume it, performer as much as listener, are many and varied, so I’m probably in a group of one when asked about its “importance.”

I was very lucky to have gotten the services of the other guys at the time that I did. They were all masters on top of their game and unstinting in the effort they gave to the whole idea of a noisy rock group with jazz harmony. I’d been working with Dave Stewart in his band National Health in 1976 after I’d been with Genesis for a year and around the time, I was putting the band together. Dave was sounding great and would be perfect for the band I had in mind but more than that, he was willing to be a writing partner to help me with the compositions. Then I wanted a stellar, featured soloist and Allan Holdsworth was turning a lot of heads with his work in Gong, particularly on the album Gazeuse! I’d never heard anyone play like that before or since. I thought he would make a good sonic partnership with Dave. That left the problem of finding a bass player who could keep up with those two. I was working with Patrick Moraz on Chris Squire’s album Fish Out of Water, I think, and he was saying he’d heard this kid in New York who was stunning. The British/European players didn’t have sufficient capability to play what I wanted to hear so it had to be a North American. I went to the US to meet with him, eat some pasta, and hear him play, and offered him the job on the spot. Turns out Jeff had almost too much ability! A lot of this is in my book Bill Bruford: The Autobiography. The entire boxed set is dedicated to the memory of Allan Holdsworth.

MR: What did working with Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and others add to your musical vocabulary?

BB: Well, they were the best known of the several bands I travelled through in my formative years so it was in them that I began to forge a musical vocabulary. I knew early on that I wanted to differentiate myself from others on the instrument, but it took a bit longer to realize I could differentiate the music in which my playing was heard by writing some or all of it myself. King Crimson was a good place for that creativity business. It seemed to be in a permanent state of evolution—just how I like it. When I know what’s coming next I tend to get bored.

Sonja Kristina, who topped the British Music female vocalist polls throughout the ’70s was the first UK female lead singer fronting a Rock band. She has been the constant flame leading Curved Air through the decades, and a Guiding Light in the Prog scene. Today, vibrant and edgy as ever, Sonja, the original Prog goddess gives a charismatic and highly visual performance. Looking like a glamorous gipsy queen with her flowing red hair and dressed in sparkly black, that signature voice is still as smoky and seductive as ever as she spins around the stage around the excellent musicians who are Curved Air.

Sonja will be on tour both as a solo artist and with Curved Air as it builds up to its 50th anniversary year.

London – The Keith Emerson Estate is pleased to announce the re-release of the celebrated album of Keith Emerson keyboard (and rare) pieces, Emerson Plays Emerson, which has long been out of print and a collector’s item.

The re-release uses a fresh transfer of the master tapes by Abbey Road, a 2017 remaster, and artwork from the original art files. The booklet contains the liner notes in English, Italian and German.

The re-release is the Estate’s own imprint label Emersongs, via Cherry Red.

The members of Keith’s family have personally overseen the preparation of this re-release and they are also preparing to approve a music transcriptions book of the album for release in early 2018. The family is focused on celebrating and enhancing Keith Emerson’s musical legacy and supporting projects which further the appreciation of his life’s work…

Keith’s eldest son, Aaron said of the release: “Since the passing of my father, we have been inundated with requests for a reissue of the album ‘Emerson Plays Emerson’. This album was a labour of love for Dad, so we decided to go with the original artwork to stay as true to the original as possible as we understand how happy Dad was with it. I know he would be happy with this re-issue, so on behalf of myself, Jo and my boys, of Damon and his family, of my mother Elinor, and of my father’s fiancé Mari, and with thanks to Daniel Earnshaw, Martin Darvill and Stewart Young for all their hard work, we hope you enjoy it!”

London, UK – Uriah Heep is pleased to announce the release of a 2CD/1DVD package of their 20th Anniversary show in 1989, which has only been available on VHS previously. This remastered release is now available on Download and as 2 CDs and 1 DVD in all new packaging.

This concert is likely to be the only gap in many committed fans’ collections and gives their core fanbase the opportunity to complete the entire Heep discography. This release is the culmination of a long process to make sure all of the Uriah Heep back catalogue is available in modern day formats and digitally.

The set also includes a bonus audio interview, recorded on the same day as the concert, which was previously only available on picture disc LP and CD for a very limited amount of time.

Of this release, Mick Box said “This is a great meeting of two products, which were always closely linked together, and are now merged into one definitive set. This is the second release on Uriah Heep Records and a great reminder of our 30th Anniversary celebrations!”

The band has also heard fans’ voices and released the first vinyl title on its own label, a picture disc LP called Selections from Totally Driven, which features the stunning artwork of Igor Morski.

The LP draws on tracks from the band’s own label’s first release, Totally Driven, which was a 2 CD collection of re-records of their greatest hits and continues to be available.

Instrumental Prog Ensemble Podd Release Debut Album “Cosmic Forces”

Podd, the new instrumental, progressive rock band, presents their debut album “Cosmic Forces,” drawing inspiration from the flood plains of the Mississippi Delta, the mountains of Macedonia, to the foothills of the Himalayas. Podd’s original compositions are born from personal introspection. It is a kind of musical storytelling without words, told with the impressions and colors only sound can evoke. Featuring Peter Olsen; guitars, Dejan Dejkoski; drums and percussion, Eric Olsen; keyboards, Takashi Otsuka; bass guitar.

Podd is the brainchild of Peter Olsen. His eclectic compositions, born from his years as an ever searching guitarist, are made manifest by his musical compatriots Dejan Dejkoski, Eric Olsen and Takashi Otsuka. The Podd sound is intense, complex, and variegated, but always funky. Podd’s music is intended as a visceral experience that takes the mind on a journey.

Dejan Dejkoski brings the perfect expression of a driving rock-fusion sound combined with the quirky world beats of his native Macedonia. Takashi Otsukas jazz-steeped finger-style bass playing and advanced theoretical background adds emphasis and counterpoint. Eric Olsen, his arch musicianship in both the jazz and classical music scenes at play, lends chordal and melodic depth to the music.

Podd as a name, is an amalgam of Peter Olsen (PO) and Dejan Dejkoski (DD) who form the core of the band. Peter and Dejan codified the overall feel and arrangements of the tunes. The album was recorded at Peter Olsen’s Aqua Velour Studio with Peter as the recording engineer. Mixing of the album was by Dave O’Donnell with mastering completed by Scott Hull of Masterdisk.

Podd is currently working on a feature video for “Beyond Beyond” off of the “Cosmic Forces” album. The band has written all new material for their second album (title unknown) and has already begun the recording process.

Podd band bios:

Peter Olsen; guitarist, composer, producer – A self taught guitarist Peter has fronted bands playing his original music since the age of 16. He has composed and played guitar in various acoustic and electric ensembles. Past efforts include his world fusion duo Advaita with Dan Johnson, collaboration and support with Prasanna Thokchom (classical Indian sitarist), Saida Fikri (Morocco) and Ustad Shabbir Nisar (India). Podd represents the apex of Peters guitar and compositional style. Peter has two other CD releases: “Arcadia” with Eric Olsen, 2010, and “The Portal” in 2011. Dejan Dejkoski; drums & percussion – Dejan comes from a musical family steeped in the rhythms of his homeland Macedonia. His father, a professional musician, exposed him at an early age to the drums. Dejan played drums with multiple outfits growing up until he moved to the USA to pursue a career in music. His interests know no boundaries with Podd representing his current state.

Eric Olsen; keyboards – Eric has crafted a distinguished career in both jazz and classical music, as a pianist and composer, harpsichordist, synthesist, organist, conductor, and accompanist. He has recorded twenty albums to great critical acclaim, with artists Randy Brecker, Ted Nash, George Garzone, Don Braden, Ratzo Harris, Tim Horner, Peter Olsen, Bucky Pizzarelli, Lou Caimano, Jan Carden, Kevin Maynor, and Larry Newcomb, and performed with jazz luminaries Billy Hart and Eliot Zigmund. He has appeared in concert from Carnegie Hall to Birdland, with orchestra in Taiwan, throughout the United States, and overseas in France, Germany, India, the Fiji Islands, and New Zealand. He teaches at Montclair State University and the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, and is Director of Music and Organist at Union Congregational Church in Montclair, NJ. Takashi Otsuka; bass guitar – Takashi studied composition, arranging and improvisation theory at Berklee College of Music. He has performed with various artists such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Boys Choir of Harlem, Ben E. King, Swing Express, Composer’s Workshop Big Band, Latin Jazz Orchestra and many other jazz musicians. Takashi worked as a bass instructor for four years at Professional Music studios, Inc. and has been teaching privately for the last ten years.

Happy Rhodes
Happy Rhodes is an American singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and electronic musician with a four-octave vocal range. Rhodes cites Wendy Carlos, Kate Bush, Queen, Yes, David Bowie, Bach and Peter Gabriel as primary influences. Happy began her recording career in 1986 producing 11 albums of electric and highly original material. She has been featured on Morning Becomes Eclectic (KCRW in Santa Monica, CA), the syndicated radio shows Echoes and The World Cafe.

Michael Cozzi
Originally from Wales & London, Cozzi got his start in the mid 80’s as the guitarist for the group Shriekback which had the pleasure of touring with “Simple Minds” “INXS” and “Peter Gabriel”. In the early 90’s, Cozzi joined “Sky Cries Mary” with whom he co wrote 5 albums and toured extensively. During this time Cozzi opened up his recording studio “Moscozzi Studio” where he co-wrote and produced the last two SCM albums “Here and Now” and “Small Town”. He has written and produced music for bands, films, commercials, and video games, which let to him meeting and working with Trey Gunn. Two years ago Trey asked Cozzi if he knew of a guitarist for The Security Project, Cozzi put his hand up like a kid in the classroom and said “me me me”.

David Jameson
Keyboardist/Eigenharpist David Jameson began his music career in the 70’s – when multi-keyboard/synth players became a thing. He spent several years touring with Time Machine and then left the music scene for a career at IBM Research after completing a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. At IBM, Dr. Jameson created and managed the Computer Music Center and was elected to the prestigious IBM Academy of Technology. David left IBM to found Digiportal Software and more recently Deskew Technologies where he now co-develops Gig Performer, a recently released audio plugin host that targets the critical needs of live performance/session musicians and which he uses in The Security Project shows instead of carrying around tons of vintage keyboards (for which the other band members are very grateful). In addition to working with The Security Project, David also performs with Beyond The Wall, a Pink Floyd tribute band.

They began writing and recording original material not long after, instinctively creating a fresh sound with Rock & Roll roots and modern vibes. Singing three-part harmonies, their distinctive blend of music and lyrics is drawn from personal inspirations and experiences, allowing the band to be fully expressive and creative in their songwriting. The band recently re-located to New York, and they are thrilled about what the future holds.

The making of the new ACTING NATURAL EP was an exciting process for the band, who loves recording and just being in the studio atmosphere. “It’s a very magical place,” says lead singer Eric Carnevale. “We selected some songs of ours that we had recently laid down on a demo, and wanted to go in and really record them properly.” They called up their good friend / engineer Jim Morris, owner of Morrisound Recording in Tampa, FL, and got to work on the first few tracks of the EP.

The sessions were filled with memorable moments and strong efforts from the whole group. During the recording process, they ended up writing a few brand-new songs in the studio, which led to the writing and the recording being finished all within the same session. The whole project was a joint effort, with JD playing some great bass, Jesse laying down the drums, and both harmonizing with Eric on lead vocals and guitar/piano/percussion. They worked around the clock, sometimes going straight through the night and only catching a couple hours of rest between sessions. Eric says, “I’ll never forget being in the booth just finishing laying down the vocals for the bridge of a song called ‘Nicole,’ and I looked down at the time and it was 7:45AM! I said that’s it, I’m going to bed!”

Acting Natural simply means to naturally be what you are. To be Aware, Awake, Able and Alive. The band’s artistry is instinctive. With their appealing on-stage chemistry and addictive melodies, ACTING NATURAL is confident in their ability to leave an impact and connect to audiences. “We are musicians, but we are also huge fans of music. It’s our identity, it’s in our blood. Our focus is music, period,” remarks Maney.

Although the band’s primary genre is rock, their music manages to cross genres and generations, attracting people from all sides of the spectrum and any ethnicity, from kids in their early teens to adults over 60. This an extremely unique quality to an artist that is not often discovered. “Being accepted by people from many different styles and walks of life is a really beautiful thing for us. We’ve played in everything from hip hop clubs, to hardcore metal venues and have been so grateful for such a positive response across the board.

It’s a spiritual feeling really. We get to play to people. Not these people, or those people…All people. Music has so much power. If we can contribute to even the slightest bit of bringing people together, we believe that’s a whole other accomplishment on its own, bigger than anything.”

With growing notoriety on the east coast, the band has their goals set on gaining new awareness on a larger platform, while continually pushing Rock & Roll music forward as artists. “We just want to play music with no constraints and be as innovative as possible, while performing for fans that allow us to consistently create and share our music,” says Carnevale. ACTING NATURAL strives to prove that raw talent, ambition, and honesty can still prevail in today’s music industry.

The new ACTING NATURAL EP will have a worldwide digital release on September 22, 2017, followed by a physical CD release on October 20, 2017, with national radio exposure, large-scale marketing campaigns, and tours to follow. The Deacon Of Rock Bites Back!

“Before The Lights Go Out” is long time Alice Cooper/Lou Reed Guitarist Steve Hunter’s latest solo album. The cover art and title make a statement about his failing eyesight, but don’t make the mistake of thinking this is a quiet wave goodbye. As soon as you put on the first track, you will know that this is more like a Blues Rock Declaration of Independence! There are sexy grooves, luscious guitar tones and melodies galore.

As with all Hunter’s releases, there is some diversity and sound imagery, not least of which is Tienes Mi Corazón where alongside his nylon string improvisation comes the sound of his own heart. And listen out for Joe Satriani adding his fire to the heat of “Mojo Man.”

Also joining Steve on a couple of tracks are two great Bass players: Erik Scott can be heard on “Mojo Man,” Erik is also an Alice Cooper alumni. On “Under The Bodhi Tree” is Andy Stoller. Steve and Andy toured together with Tracy Chapman during the “Telling Stories” album period, most recently Andy has been touring with Ann Wilson of Heart.

Says Steve, “This album was a real joy for me on many levels. A big part of the inspiration and motivation that kept me going; was from all the people out there who had faith in me and encouraged me through the entire process with their donations and comments. It was really a wonderful experience having you all be a part of it. It’s my deepest hope and desire that you all enjoy the music on this album as much as I enjoyed making it. Steve Hunter is his own man; he has been around the block with a forty-five year career.

From his 1973 solos on Alice Cooper’s “Billion Dollar Babies” album, his legendary acoustic work on Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill,” his “Intro” to Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane” and his searing opening solos on Aerosmith’s version of “Train Kept A Rolling” Most recently he can be heard on Alice Cooper’s 2017 album “Paranormal” making this his ninth Cooper album appearance. The Deacon is not done yet but his life is evolving! He has challenges playing live now but his honed skill, tone, power and soul, is dished up on this hot plate of guitar driven instrumental tastiness.

The album features some of Nik’s most mature songs in years including the emotional opener “End Of The World” featuring a special guest performance by former Hawkwind/Pink Fairies member Paul Rudolph. Another Hawkwind alumnus, violinist Simon House, jumps on board for the space trippy “Why Are You?.” Turner also revisits one of the Hawkwind classics that he co-wrote, “Master Of The Universe,” giving the tune a modern twist. Frequently called “The Spirit Of Hawkwind,” Turner was a major creative force during that group’s most critically acclaimed and successful period, 1969-1976. His outlandish costumes, improvised sax and flute playing, and general wild man persona became iconic representations of the band, and we would go on to pen some of their most popular songs including “Brainstorm” and “Master of the Universe.” After leaving Hawkwind, Turner used his newfound freedom to travel to Egypt, where he soaked up the history and culture, and also made a recording of his flute music in the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid of Cheops. In 1985, Turner relocated to the western side of Wales, where he set up a new age community in a fairly rural, isolated area. He has continued to release new music including 2013’s Space Gypsy, 2015’s Space Fusion Odyssey, and this year’s Life In Space.
