Musicians Contact Celebrates 50 Years Of Referring Musicians To Working Bands

Musicians Contact is celebrating their 50th year in business connecting bands and musicians to each other. Founded by Sterling Howard in 1969, Musicians Contact still remains the place where working bands locate members and individual players find gigs with bands.

Notable past members include Billy Joel, Todd Rundgren, Rick Springfield, Danny Elfman, James Williamson, Kim Fowley, Earl Slick, Robin Zander, Barry Manilow, Tower of Power, Lita Ford,  Jimmy Greenspoon, Terri Nunn, John Lydon, Dr John, Stiv Bators, Bobby Kimball, Terry Bozzio, Iron Butterfly, Robert Palmer,  Art “Killer” Kane, George Lynch, Stu Hamm, Bobby McFerrin, Warrant and many others.

But Sterling says, “It’s important to stress that even though we’ve had famous clients seeking players, obviously the vast majority of our incoming gigs come from working cover and original acts, part time, full time, local, traveling, festival, wedding, casino, club work, etc. And we’ve always been a free service to bands needing players. Some individuals have listed themselves as many as 20 times over the years because they are finding gigs here that they don’t find elsewhere. I’m trying to point out that it is still the ‘bread and butter’ jobs that pay the bills, and these are the ones we get from band leaders.” (On the website Click https://www.musicianscontact.com/recent-jobs to read some partial examples.)

Sterling explains, “Why did I start the business? My working band broke up in 1967 because two of our members were drafted into the military and there was no place to find musicians except for tiny ads on music store bulletin boards. The idea struck me to form an organized musicians referral. That’s when I rented an office upstairs in the Whisky a GoGo. I had resumes and ad forms, and individuals and bands would come in the office, (or call) to connect. I even had many Union members register, since the Union provided no resumes at that time. I was 22 when I started this company, and no, who would have guessed I’d still be doing it 50 years later!”

Within a year after starting, the office was moved to a larger location. In the early 1970’s, traveling bands found members as they passed through California and as word spread, groups from other states called for replacements. Full time working cover acts became more popular, hiring players for road gigs.

By the end of the decade, the office staff had grown to five, and a branch office was opened near Disneyland. Las Vegas groups imported players, and country artists and jazz acts started using the service to hire available players.

In those days, the job listings were distributed to individual musicians either by phone or in person, but a major change was soon to come. Sterling hired a team of technicians to build a custom made computer connected to seven tape recorders. Members could now call 24 hours, enter a password into their phone, and hear current available jobs. It was primitive by today’s standards, but it worked and remember, the year was 1983!

By 1990, cruise ship jobs became more popular and gigs arrived from Asia, seeking players for r&b, funk and soul groups. The “antique” computer eventually gave way to the science of voicemail, so a new computer was put into action to distribute job listings. Entering the era of music videos for TV, managers viewed photos of musicians for use in commercials and videos.

In 1995, it was time to upgrade the call-in hotline yet again with an advanced voice mail system, allowing musicians to record their profiles and demos right over the phone. By 1998, Musicians Contact went online with it’s first website, and became truly a national service.

There have been various website updates and changes to the site, culminating in what you see today. But, the basic function has always been the same since 1969 – a referral service for bands and musicians to find each other.

Stories about famous players? “Well, I still have Billy Joel’s resume from 1972 where he states ‘I’m not interested in messing around, I just want money’. But later he came in when he tried to form an original band and asked the guitarist sitting next to him if he wanted to join. “Is it a paying situation?’, the guitarist asked. ‘No’ said Billy, ‘this is an original band’. “Then sorry, I’m not interested’ replied the guitarist. I’m sure this has happened thousands of times to thousands of musicians!

“Burleigh Drummond, drummer for Ambrosia, hooked up with them through us about 1972 and is STILL with them. Berlin found Terri Nunn around 1979 and she is STILL with them as well. International Celtic rockers The Young Dubliners found their drummer here about 25 years ago, and they just put in an ad seeking a bassist! (and yes, David Ingraham is STILL their drummer).”

Ahead of the release on 25th October, of the new solo album, All This Will Be Yours from Bruce Soord, the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and frontman for The Pineapple Thief, Soord has revealed his video for the title track.

The new album, described by Soord as an observational record, it is inspired by the joy felt by the birth of his third child juxtaposed by the local deprivation in his hometown and with the release of the title track Soord explores these themes more “This song was literally inspired by walking with my new-born daughter in my hometown of Yeovil. I love my hometown, but it’s got its fair share of problems. I was taken by the contrast of this smiling soul staring up from her pram, surrounded by lost souls. Drunks, addicts, the hopeless. Near me is a notorious drug den. No windows, no electricity, no running water. But nevertheless, it is a hive of activity. Lifeless addicts drifting in and out. So our only choice was ‘to push past 158’. Myself, turning a blind eye. The community turning a blind eye.  But don’t get me wrong, I love my hometown. And the people in it. All this will be hers.”

Bruce continues “The video was created by George Laycock and produced by Blacktide Phonic/Visual, who I’ve worked with previously, was shot in London rather than Yeovil as a way of, hopefully,  reflecting the universal themes of the song. Talking of the themes, they are not universally bleak. There is plenty to be worried about. But there really is plenty to be hopeful for as well”.

Keyboardist, songwriter, producer, television and radio presenter, and author, Rick Wakeman is best known for his work with progressive rock band YES, which spans across five tenures between 1971 and 2004 and for his solo albums released in the 1970s. Wakeman’s discography includes over 90 solo albums that range from several musical styles. He has made many television and radio appearances; in recent years he became known for his contributions to the BBC comedy series “Grumpy Old Men,” “Watchdog” and his radio show on Planet Rock that aired from 2005 to 2010. Wakeman has written three books; an autobiography and two memoirs. In 2017, Wakeman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of YES.

SeaSide Fragments is Created and Produced out of the Love for the Music and Musicians who wrote, created and produced in the 60’s and 70’s. Each track is carefully thought out, yet recorded in between sound checks and shows, and are collaborations of our friends and artists from these decades and tracks! Each song was recorded in 1 to 2 takes, all musicians live in the studio together with no rehearsal or planned structure, only what was in my vision. Finally mixed and mastered to reflect the analog, vinyl era of Music!

Says producer Kim Reilly, “SeaSide Fragments is basically my idea of doing old classic songs from the 70’s era that are special to me. I have asked, and continue to ask  some of the artists I work with over the years and have become good friends to help me in this vision. Every friend/artist I have approached so far has been more than happy to join me and be a part of this vision and labor of love, and has come either to the studio pre sound checks of one of my shows with me, or has flown in tracks to implement. I have never been asked for anything in return. I feel as though I am fortunate in this business to have the relationships I have! The music industry is a cut throat, cruel world, and this has proven to me that it is not that way for everyone!

“’How Long’: this track was recorded in 2 takes with just 2 hours of a window between my sound check and show that day. The artists really had no idea what was going on until we arrived at the studio. I told them how I wanted to song revised, and they just nailed it. Dave Muse was added after the fact as I chose a Flute to be part of this track. Billy Livesay (of Clarence Clemons Temple of Soul) was also added in after the fact. The rest of the track was done on the spot! Here is a segment of the SeaSide Fragment intentions.

“I chose this song ‘How Long’ not only because of it’s catchy hook, but because the song is reflecting ‘the Bass player performing in another band without the band’s knowledge, and then returning.’” 

Paul Carrack, original lead vocalist for Ace, responded favorably after hearing the new cover of “How Long” by SeaSide Fragments. The track was produced by Kim Reilly and SeaSide Music Management.

Prog legends Nektar have released their first single “SkyWriter” B/W “Devil’s Door” in October from their eagerly anticipated forthcoming new album “The Other Side”! This is the first new studio album by Nektar made in the United States since 1977!

The original members of Nektar; Derek “Mo” Moore, Ron Howden, and Mick Brockett are back. They’ve added Ryche Chlanda from Fireballet and the 78′ band, Randy Dembo from the 2005 band, and newcomer and world-class keyboard player, Kendall Scott.

The music for Nektar’s new album “The Other Side” comes from the 1978 era when they were writing in Mo’s basement in Chatham, New Jersey. This music was put on pause for the last 40 YEARS and it’s now time to release it with new input and fresh ideas. The music is growing exponentially as Nektar continue rehearsing and writing and letting it take the band to new heights.

Of the new single, Mo explains, “’Sky Pilot’ I wrote in 1978 but did not like it so much, it was OK but not finished. Ryche switched it around and wrote the music for the verse and it became ‘SkyWriter’ which I love. Words are by Ryche, Mick and myself. It’s a story of a guy whose significant other…wife, girlfriend, mother, dies and he is up in the sky writing letters which he hopes she will see. All part of “The Other Side” concept. By the way it does not say he was flying IN anything, I will leave that to your imagination.”

The b-side of the single “’Devils Door’ was an old 1974 song we played in a couple of concerts back in the day but we never finished it, I think the chorus was a little too high and we had never taken it into the studio to finish it. Ryche, Mick and I wrote lyrics for it and got it ready to record. While we were getting ready I realized that Roye Albrighton’s introduction guitar sounded great, I suggested starting off the song with it which was enthusiastically received by all. It became a great piece of music and the beginning vocal even sounds like Roye. The story is of flying near the and flying away from the Devils Door which is beyond the Other Side…”

The 12-inch Vinyl and CD single will first be available at ProgStock, which the band will be performing – October 11th – 13th. Nektar’s new album will be released on Esoteric Records in the UK in January 2020.

The album’s first single “I See Love” was released August 9 and has received rave reviews. CC describes ABSOULUTELY as an album full of “songs that came through my Soul and out of my Heart!” It includes two classic cover tracks delivered in CC’s signature soulful style, “We’re A Winner” by Curtis Mayfield, and “Come Live With Me Angel” by Marvin Gaye. Cornell and his main Producer Kirk Crumpler received tremendous contributions from other talented musicians including his Mentor and Grammy winning Producer Narada Michael Walden, Eddie M (Sheila E) on Saxophone, Rich Armstrong (Tony Toni Tone, etc.) on Trumpet, Brian Braziel on drums, James Henry on Percussions, Dave Shul, and Larry White (Bobby Brown) on Guitar along with Cam Perridge who also was the Engineer for ABSOULUTELY! Additional vocals were provided by featured artist Naté Soulsanger (on the song “Morning Touch” produced by James Day), Niecey Robinson, and mentor Larry Batiste.

Cornell’s strong love for music developed when he was a young man growing up in a San Francisco home chock full of Jazz, Blues, Funk, Soul, and Gospel, which has been the inspiration for his creativity and songwriting. He co-wrote and produced his internationally acclaimed 2016 album In The Moment
 with co-producer Kirk “KC” Crumpler, who has produced various award-winning artists. A collection of 13 diverse tracks spanning R&B, Funk, and heart-piercing Soul numbers, In The Moment is a mix of the past and present, featuring solid classics and contemporary chart-toppers. CC performed all lead and background vocals on the entire album and was also instrumental in the music’s production.

Rocking Horse Music Club presents the music of Anthony Phillips feat. guest appearances by Steve Hackett, John Hackett, Nick Magnus, Kate St. John, John Helliwell & others!

Rocking Horse Music Club presents the music of original Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips on the new album, “Which Way the Wind Blows.” The Rocking Horse Music Club is a songwriting and performing collective that emerged from Rocking Horse Studio, a world-class recording facility in central New Hampshire, USA. The group features producer/songwriter/instrumentalist Brian Coombes, singer/songwriter/guitarist Justin Cohn, and singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Patrik Gochez, along with Rocking Horse Studio session musicians Eric Wagley (drums), Myron Kibbee (guitar), Mike McAdam (guitar), and Brenden Harisaides. The band has been performing as a unit live and in the studio since 2008.

In February 2019, Rocking Horse Music Club began rehearsing and recording material for a tribute album to original Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips. The album is scheduled for release on October 11, 2019, with live dates in England scheduled for November 2019.

The album features numerous special guests, including: 

Steve Hackett (guitar) – Anthony Phillips’ replacement in Genesis. A legend.

John Hackett (flute) – in addition to playing flute on the Anthony Phillips album “The Geese & the Ghost,” John has performed on numerous Steve Hackett records and live shows.

Nick Magnus (keyboards) – Nick has performed on numerous Steve Hackett records and live shows.

Kate St. John (oboe) – Kate was a founding member of Dream Academy and contributed to a Nick Drake tribute album and live show.

John Helliwell (clarinet/saxophone) – John was a primary member of Supertramp.

Noel McCalla (vocals) – Noel was the lead vocalist on Mike Rutherford’s first solo album, “Smallcreep’s Day.”

Steve Anderson (guitar) – Steve is currently the guitarist in the Room, a UK progressive/melodic rock band. Prior to the Room, he was the guitarist in Grey Lady Down, a British neo-prog band in the 1990s.

Evelyn Cormier (vocals) – Evelyn was an American Idol Finalist on ABC television in 2019. She is currently recording her new album at Rocking Horse Studio.

Caroline Carter (vocals) – Caroline is a former Miss New Hampshire. As a vocalist, she won the talent competition at the Miss America pageant in 2017. She is currently recording her debut album at Rocking Horse Studio.

Coombes describes the origins of the name Rocking Horse Music Club: “Over the years we’ve developed a community of like-minded musicians, singers, and songwriters at Rocking Horse Studio. Many of the artists that work with us here at the studio have collaborated with each other and have appeared on each other’s records. Our group project, the Rocking Horse Music Club, developed out of those collaborations.” 

The group’s debut single, “Everywhere is Home,” a gospel-inspired song that features London’s Sing Gospel Choir, was released to critical acclaim in April 2018. The track was featured on radio in New England and received prime time airplay on BBC Radio and London Live in England. In June 2019, almost exactly a year after its release, Everywhere is Home received the award for Best Song – Gospel at the Independent Music Awards in New York City.

The band’s debut album, “Every Change of Seasons,” was released in September 2018, shortly before the band departed for a tour of the UK that saw them perform throughout the country, including numerous appearances at the BBC and a special engagement for the British Prime Minister.

Here is a track-by-track summary of the album with comments from producer Brian Coombes: 

“Um & Aargh” (originally from “Sides”): Our take on Ant’s new wave/prog pop song from 1979… reminds me of Squeeze meets the Cars, with a touch of Genesis thrown in. Features Patrik Gochez on lead vocals. 

“Paperchase” (originally from “Wise After the Event”): Dreamy 12 string guitars and mellotron feature heavily on this one, along with a wonderful vocal from Justin Cohn. It sounds like something Genesis would have done circa 1976. 

“Which Way the Wind Blows” (originally from “The Geese & the Ghost”): We took Ant’s beautiful acoustic song, gave it a slight R&B feel, and then added an epic prog rock climax. This one features Noel McCalla (the lead singer on Mike Rutherford’s “Smallcreep’s Day”) on lead vocals and legendary Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett on the ending guitar solo. Where else can you hear Messrs. McCalla and Hackett performing together on an Anthony Phillips song? 

“Silver Song” (originally from “Sides” remaster): ‘Silver Song’ was originally intended as a single from 1973, featuring Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Our version features the incomparable Nick Magnus on the ending keyboard solo. 

“Something Blue” (originally from “Invisible Men” remaster): We were looking for a song for Evelyn Cormier to sing on the project. Ant and I looked through his catalog of unfinished and/or unreleased songs and presented a few to Evelyn. She loved ‘Something Blue.’ Her sultry vocal delivery led us down a smooth-jazz path with the arrangement that also features the amazing talents of Wesley Thurber on trumpet and Jeremy Harman on cello.

“Pulling Faces” (originally from “Wise After the Event”): This is one of my favorite productions on the record. The rhythm section performed brilliantly, Mike McAdam and Myron Kibbee played some great stuff, and Justin delivered a killer vocal. The song also features Steve Anderson from the Room on lead guitar. Mike and I toured with Steve back in the 1990s when he was with Grey Lady Down and we were in Tristan Park, so this collaboration was a cool virtual reunion. 

“Collections” (originally from “The Geese & the Ghost”): Just like ‘Which Way the Wind Blows,’ we simply couldn’t leave Ant’s beautiful song alone. The chord progression led us into Beatles territory, so we embraced that vibe. This one is really singer/pianist Pat Gochez’s arrangement and features members of his band on drums and bass. Also worthy of note is Myron Kibbee’s slide guitar and the choral background vocals.

“Sleepfall: The Geese Fly West” (originally from “The Geese & the Ghost”): One of Ant’s prettiest melodies. We developed the piece into something bigger, adding and changing instrumentation each sequence through the progression until it ends with a dramatic flourish. Features John Hackett (who performed on the original version back in the day) on flute and Kate St John from Dream Academy on oboe. 

“Nightmare” (originally from “Sides”): Ant’s prog rock classic instrumental in really a showcase for drummer Eric Wagley and bassist Brenden Harisaides. We added a lo-fi optigan/toy piano groove in the middle, and with Caroline Carter’s wailing vocal and John Helliwell’s melodic saxophone in the end section, I guess I’m displaying my Pink Floyd influences vividly on my sleeve.

About Producer Brian Coombes 
Brian Coombes is an award-winning producer, songwriter, and musician. With influences ranging from progressive rock to melodic pop, Brian combines his love of interesting instrumentation, quirky keyboards, melodic hooks, and lush vocal harmonies with an extensive technical knowledge of the recording process to create releases that are both artistically and sonically rewarding. He is the owner of Rocking Horse Studio; he has also produced projects at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee and Genesis’ Fisher Lane Farm in Chiddingfold, England.

Prior to Rocking Horse, Brian was a founding member of Tristan Park, a progressive rock band that was signed to the British record label, GFT. The band recorded four albums and toured extensively in Europe and North America before going into hiatus in 1998. After Tristan Park, Brian recorded a record with his wife, using the name Waking in the Blue.

In his time as a producer, Brian has worked with such notable musicians as Chris Difford (Squeeze), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Anthony Phillips (Genesis), Ian McDonald (King Crimson), Garth Hudson (the Band), Greg Hawkes (the Cars), Ingrid Chavez (Prince), Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan), Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention), Vernon Reid (Living Color), Jonathan Mover (GTR) and Kenwood Dennard (Brand X).

Brian has received various honors for his production work. In 2014, he received two Emmy award nominations from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In 2015, he received a “Producer of the Year” award from the New England Music Awards. And in 2019, “Everywhere is Home,” a song that he co-wrote with Patrik Gochez, received the Best Song – Gospel award at the Independent Music Awards.
