Los Angeles, CA – When former Hawkwind bass player Alan Davey first launched his Hawkestrel project, an intrepid, free-wheeling collaborative space rock supergroup, the world was on the verge of being plunged into the COVID pandemic. Like a starship bound for better worlds, the band, which counted Hawkwind co-founder Nik Turner along with several other Hawkwind alumni among its crew, ventured beyond the darkness that engulfed the planet and reached meteoric heights, being embraced by both longtime Hawkwind fans and newcomers alike.

Now the mighty Hawkestrel is ready to soar once again with a new album coming April 12. Hosting another collection of stellar musicians and heroic “musicnauts,” including one actual space traveler, William Shatner, alongside Simon House, Mick Slattery, Huw Lloyd-Langton, Helios Creed, and lots more, Chaos Rocks seeks to pay tribute to the past, revamping classic songs like “Silver Machine” as well as honoring those who now live among the stars. Just check out the album’s first single, a transformation of Robert Calvert’s “Evil Rock” from his 1981 album with the brilliant Mick Taylor lending his prodigious six-string talents. Music Artist J.Edmond To Release Debut Single “City Walk” on March 22, 2024

J.Edmond (formerly known as “Jebb”) is a musician hailing from Prospect, CT. Since 2016, he has released over 50 titles under his former name and has been heavily influenced by the likes of Badfinger, Big Star, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. “City Walk” is the first single for J.Edmond, which will be released on March 22, 2024, The new single represents the rebirth of a musician by the name of Jebb, who now goes by the name J.Edmond. The track represents the human condition between light and dark, and how those who are creative have to deal with the obstacles that stop them from being themselves. “City Walk” takes listeners on a journey that is fun, but also laced with fears of the unknown, like life itself. The CD and Bandcamp exclusive bonus track were once planned for a Jebb album but fits here very well with its Badfinger laced sound.

Says J.Edmond, “This single first came to me during a trip to Florida in 2022. This was the first time I traveled alone, primarily to meet up with one of my closest friends. We decided to venture out to Walt Disney World for a few days, and at the end of it, we headed over to CityWalk in Universal Studios Orlando to see The All-American Rejects perform at the Hard Rock. I don’t know what it is, but walking around CityWalk, which is like a small marketplace you can explore before entering the Universal theme parks, really struck a chord with me. This is where the song’s name came from. I wrote it in about 20 mins, but it took a full year to really finalize it. The first person I showed the song to was Steve Rodgers, a fellow musician based in Connecticut. He decided to add some great lap steel and bass parts that are, in my eyes, really pertinent to the song’s sound. Soon after, I called in another friend of mine, Los Angeles-based musician A. Michael Collins of Broken Sound (featuring session legend Fernando Perdomo). He would add drum parts and the fuzzy guitar bits to the track. In the end, I sang lead and played acoustic guitar. Creating this song was definitely a learning experience for me as well. As I said, it took well over a year to really get to know the track, and I feel that with well over 50 releases under my belt, this very well might be the work I am most proud of.”

The cover art was a photograph of River Walk in San Antonio by Ivan Iniego Aguiar.

Says J.Edmond, “I plan to work on getting my new moniker out there by doing gigs both in-state and out-of-state, along with my brand new repertoire, J.Edmond & The Old Souls. We came to fruition in February of this year, but this is definitely one of the tightest bands I have ever worked with. I’m hoping to get them in the studio at some point as well.”

Known for his innovative approach to music, Alvarado collaborated with a group of talented local musicians for this project, infusing their live cover rendition of “Brain Damage” with a fresh, studio-produced sound. Ray White – vocals, guitar
One of the most powerful and distinctive voices that ever graced a Zappa vocal, Ray White. Ray White’s distinctive, powerful voice was first heard interpreting Zappa’s music in 1976. From that beginning, he became an integral member of Frank’s band through 1984, and can be seen on the DVD recorded the summer of that year in New York, “Does Humor Belong In Music?” A former member of the Edwin Hawkins Singers gospel group, he also brings a solid R&B guitar style to the blend, both as a rhythm player and as a soloist. Looking towards future creative endeavors with Banned From Utopia, Ray is also a gifted writer and lyricist

Robert Martin – vocals, keyboards, saxophone, French horn
Keyboards, horns, and of course, the voice that always made Frank smile, Robert Martin brings it all. Robert (Bobby) Martin joined Frank Zappa in 1981 and sang and played various instruments on every tour from then on, through the final tour in 1988. In addition to the diverse sonic palette Robert brought to the band with his multi-instrumental skills, Zappa relied heavily on Robert’s unique vocal power and range to enhance the variety of musical styles Frank explored in all his performances. In any moment, Frank might switch from heavy metal to classic Doo Wop, or anything in between, and Robert would be right there..

Scott Thunes – guitar, vocals
Scott Thunes played with Zappa’s band from 1981 to 1988, and plays on such albums as “The Man From Utopia”, “Them or Us,” “Broadway the Hard Way,” “You Can’t Do That on Stage Anymore,” “Does Humor Belong In Music?,” “The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life,” “Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention,” “Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch,” “Make a Jazz Noise Here,” and “Guitar,” a double-album compilation of Zappa’s live guitar solos. His most prominent bass performance can be heard on Frank Zappa’s “Valley Girl,” which peaked at #32 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Robbie Mangano – guitar, vocals
Robbie has performed with Zappa Tribute band Project/Object, playing bass and guitar with members of Frank Zappa’s band, and embarked on his first tour and first overseas gigs through that ensemble. Soon after he would begin touring with more Zappa alumni in The Grandmothers Of Invention. Most recently he has toured with Sean Lennon & Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Jamie Kime – guitar
Jamie Kime has performed and recorded with Dweezil Zappa’s Zappa Plays Zappa project from 2006 until 2012. More recently, he did a European tour with The Banned From Utopia. Earlier this year, Jamie Kime recorded his very first solo album: “Alleys.” Some standout moments include gigs w/ The Boneshakers (feat. Texas blues/soul legend Malford Milligan), Jewel, the original lineup of a Zappa Plays Zappa – with whom he collected a Grammy Award in 2009, the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the World Premiere of Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels Orchestral Suites in 2013, and rock legend Dr. John. The Jamie Kime Group performs on the first Monday of every month at the world-famous Baked Potato in Studio City, CA.

Joel Taylor – drums
Joel Taylor has toured or recorded with artists such as Greg Howe, Brian Bromberg, Mike Garson, Al Di Meola, Frank Gambale, Allan Holdsworth, Banned From Utopia, and appears on Yanni’s live concert video Tribute.

The Paul Green Rock Academy

The Paul Green Rock Academy (PGRA) is the latest music program from School of Rock founder Paul Green. From the very beginning of his teaching career Paul has taught the music of Frank Zappa, calling it “one stop shopping for musical education.”

While co-headlining the German Zappa festival Zappanale in 2023 Paul and his students got to see Banned From Utopia in action, and vice versa, and an instant bond was formed between the acts.

FEATURING AN UN-BROADCAST TV SESSION OF LIFETIME FOR BEAT CLUB IN 1970 & ALL THE SURVIVING BBC RADIO & TV SESSION RECORDINGS & APPEARANCES, INCLUDING TWO CONCERTS SCREENED BY THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST IN 1975 & 1981.

ALL NEWLY REMASTERED & RESTORED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. INCLUDES AN ILLUSTRATED BOOK WITH ESSAY.

The set features all the surviving BBC radio and television appearances made by Jack between 1970 and 2001, along with a wonderful un-broadcast session recorded for the German TV show Beat Club by Lifetime (also featuring Tony Williams, John McLaughlin and Larry Young) filmed around the time of the album “Turn it Over”.

The BBC material includes two legendary In Concert recordings. The first concert dates from 1971 (with friends Chris Spedding, Graham Bond, John Marshall and Art Themen) and is included in its entirety with the full 18-minute version of “Powerhouse Sod” presented on CD for the first time, the second concert dates from 1977 and features the band Jack assembled for the “How’s Tricks” album. Also featured are both audio and video recordings of the 1975 Old Grey Whistle Test special concert with Jack’s band featuring Carla Bley, Mick Taylor, Ronnie Leahy and Bruce Gary. The set also includes a concert from 1981 recorded for The Old Grey Whistle Test, a TV appearance from 1982 and the complete Jazz in Britain sessions from 1971 and 1978 featuring Jack Bruce, Jon Hiseman and John Surman, along with a session for Later with Jools Holland from 2001.

“Smiles & Grins” is the most comprehensive collection of Jack’s broadcast sessions ever released and it includes an illustrated booklet and essay – a fitting celebration of the musical legacy of Jack Bruce, a much-missed master of his craft.

Alchemy Records Elevates the Vibe With “Momentarily,” the Highly Anticipated New Album From Guitarist Jon Durant

PORTLAND, OR – Alchemy Records is thrilled to announce the release of “Momentarily,” an ensemble tour de force from celebrated composer guitarist Jon Durant. The album showcases the best of Durant’s unique skill set, an amalgamation of transcultural, jazz-related styles, that gives way to euphoric, universally relatable grooves and soundscapes. A trio recording featuring Durant alongside longtime musical partners Colin Edwin (bass) and Andi Pupato (drums/ percussion), both legends in their own right, this musical jewel showcases rare mastery through individually compelling tracks and comprehensive arcs.

The responsive and fluid interaction of these three collaborators immediately draws listeners in. Created initially as a series of guitar improvisations by Durant, the composer then developed and rearranged the pieces for trio. Grounded musical elements beautifully balance freely improvised aspects, hinting at one of the key ingredients of Durant’s signature, sublime sound. The seamless flow between composition and improvisation leaves the listener in an effortless state of engagement.

Throughout “Momentarily” Durant’s explorative guitar leads the way. His expressive use of fretless guitar on all but one of the tracks “shows he is one of the precious few practitioners on the instrument that elevate it beyond its usual presence as a mere novelty.” (All About Jazz) In addition, his use of guitar synth – in this case playing a modified sample of an Armenian Duduk – adds a breathy counterpoint to his emotionally tinged guitar parts.

Percussionist Andi Pupato (Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin, Andreas Vollenwider, Fractal Sextet) shines throughout with his totally unique hybrid kit comprising both hand drums and conventional drum set. This distinctive collection of timbres emotes the open space of European jazz with considerable Middle Eastern elements that the hand drums reveal alongside Durant’s Fretless guitar. Anchoring the whole process is bassist Colin Edwin (O.R.k., Gaudi, Burnt Belief), with whom Durant has worked extensively over the past 12 years. On “Momentarily” he is playing acoustic basses (upright and fretless acoustic) providing a sonorous low end balancing out the whole picture.  His beautifully melodic playing on the opening track “In A Moment” provides especially delightful interaction with Durant and Pupato.

Among the standout tracks on the album is the epic “Rockets on Kyiv.” Originally conceived and recorded on the morning Russia bombed the glass bridge in Kyiv (where Durant, Edwin and Ukrainian singer Inna Kovtun had filmed many scenes in the video for their song “Gannochka”). When Durant steps on the distortion on this one, you can instantly feel the deep emotions he was experiencing that morning. In addition, the one track with fretted guitar (“Bitter Wind”) shows a depth of gratitude towards his Scandinavian musical influences.

Following the overwhelming success of their 2023 tour, Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks today announce the first 22 shows of the 2024 “YES Epics, Classics, and More” tour. The tour begins on May 30th at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ.  Like the 2023 tour, the set list will contain numerous YES songs from all stages of the band’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career that feature Jon as their lead vocalist and songwriter. The tour also promises the introduction of new material created by Jon and The Band Geeks.

Jon and the Band Geeks are currently putting the finishing touches on a brand new nine track cd set for release in late summer with a first single and video targeted for release in late June. Tour dates below
