Trey Gunn’s 7d Media Releases Experimental Guitarist, Composer, and Producer Andre LaFosse Releases “Entry Level: An Introduction to Andre LaFosse” Spanning More Than Twenty Years of His Career

When I dreamed up a new collection of experimental guitarists for 7d, Andre was my instant first pick.” – Trey Gunn

7D Media is proud to announce that experimental guitarist, composer, and producer Andre LaFosse is joining our musical family with “Entry Level: An Introduction to Andre LaFosse.” Spanning more than twenty years of his career, this 14 track album brings together remastered classics, remixed favorites, and even offers a sneak peek into the future with an exclusive new track.

Throughout the collection, LaFosse’s distinctive “turntablist guitar” technique takes center stage, showcasing his skill in looping, multitracking, and creative sound manipulation. The title track, “Entry Level,” debuts as an electrifying preview of his upcoming album, “Then Again,” scheduled for release later this year on Trey Gunn’s experimental music label, 7D Media.

Highlights include the energetic “Hard Sci-Fi” (2012), the genre-defying “Interference” (2003), and a re-amped version of “Balancing Act” (2012), along with updated renditions of “Disambiguation,” “IMNSHO,” and “Seismic.”

This compilation serves as the perfect starting point for new listeners while also offering longtime fans a rich archive of LaFosse’s evolving artistry – from early experiments like “Signify” (1999) to more recent explorations such as “Each Planet a Complete Society” (2022). Aligning seamlessly with 7D Media’s mission to spotlight groundbreaking artists, “Entry Level” stands as a testament to LaFosse’s enduring creativity and his significant contributions to the experimental guitar music landscape.

I first encountered Andre’s musical vision through his release ‘Normalized’ and within two bars I was floored. Finally! Someone had taken guitar-looping into wild new territory. While everyone else was crafting these big, swirling, watery pieces à la Robert Fripp (I’d been wrestling with that myself), Andre completely threw out the rulebook.

His ‘Normalized’ sound was seriously funky stuff – think more Carlos Alomar (Bowie), Adrian Belew, and Fela Kuti’s guitar players. More James Brown swagger than Brian Eno dreamscape.

And his looping technique? Totally ‘wrong’ by convention, and brilliantly so! He was corrupting those guitar loops like a mad scientist: chopping them up, stretching them out, breaking them into tiny blips before expanding them back again. No more of those long, drippy sustaining guitar layers – this was musical fragmentation and reassembly, all while keeping the groove alive.

When I dreamed up a new collection of experimental guitarists for 7d, Andre was my instant first pick. Could we get him involved? Would he make new recordings for us? Yes and yes! Even better – we got his whole back catalog, including (Yes!) ‘Normalized.’” – Trey Gunn

The most exquisite moments in music are when you connect with the other players, when you fly, when you touch the spirit and the audience is there with you.” – Andy Summers, One Train Later

Having crossed paths briefly in the ’60s in Bournemouth where Fripp took over Andy’s guitar chair in the band at Bournemouth’s Majestic Hotel, it wasn’t until 1981 – when Summers wrote to Fripp – that the two guitarists would work together.

With King Crimson fresh from recording the now classic album ‘Discipline’ after a considerable break, Fripp was immediate in his response to Summers’s suggestion of working together. And though The Police were busy with the recording and touring of ‘Ghost in the Machine’, the two guitarists somehow managed to find time to experiment, develop and record the first of their two albums.

Whilst “I Advance Masked” showcased the skill and differing guitar techniques of the two players with heavy influence of Fripp’s multi-rhythmic playing evident, their second 1984 album ‘Bewitched’ was a more melodic affair with the inclusion of additional personnel including bassist Chris Childs and Sara Lee, and as Fripp put it, “the album is a lot more Andrew than it is me”.

Almost 40 years later – during plans to reissue the original albums and searching for the original tapes – Summers came across four new tapes in a Los Angeles vault. Not only was most of the original material on those tapes, but a treasure trove of previously unreleased material, early versions, alternative versions of tracks were unearthed.

From that, eleven unreleased tracks were arranged/edited and newly mixed and, along with an alternative take of “Maquillage” and an early slower version of “Parade”, a third mini album titled ‘Mother Hold the Candle Steady’ was created. More previously unreleased tracks such as Balinese and Brainstorm and delights such as an early mix of New Marimba were also discovered by David Singleton in the process of collating and mixing this collection.

In addition, this package includes an audio documentary titled ‘Can We Record Tony?’ which is from a series of cassettes Fripp kept, containing their original exploratory improvisations.

Andy Summers and Robert Fripp “I Advance Masked” (2024 David Singleton Mix) 200gm vinyl

• 200-gram audiophile vinyl of Andy Summers and Robert Fripp’s 1982 album.
• New 2024 stereo mix by David Singleton
• Cut by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering
• Includes 2 previously unreleased tracks ‘Skyline’ and ‘Entropy Pulse’

With a very different sounding 1980s King Crimson lineup on tour and The Police’s status as one of the biggest acts in the world, it’s unsurprising that an album of guitar duets from Summers/Fripp – despite being as far apart from the concept of ‘guitar hero’ playing as possible to imagine, proved intriguing enough to spend several weeks in the US Billboard 200 charts.

On the multitrack tapes for both “I Advance Masked” and “Bewitched”, there were many unfinished tracks. With ‘Skyline’ and ‘Entropy Pulse’, Fripp (on ‘Skyline’) and Summers (on ‘Entropy Pulse’) had played numerous part-complete solos. According to Singleton, this left him “with the wonderful task, now very simple in a digital world, of making a coherent backing and then combining and switching between the various solos to create the “duets” that you now hear”.

Americana-Fusion Ensemble JACK O’ THE CLOCK to Release New Album PORTRAITS on February 13, 2025!

For Immediate Release

Americana-Fusion Ensemble JACK O’ THE CLOCK to Release New Album PORTRAITS on February 13, 2025!

“Jack O’ the Clock just seem to go from strength to strength, one of the most original and compelling groups I know playing some amazing compositions that seem to tread effortlessly between Van Dyke Parks and folk music from an as yet unidentified culture, while making all the things you’ve always thought of as difficult sound as effortless and natural as breathing.” – FRED FRITH

PORTRAITS is “accessible, smart music” (Pascal Bouquillard, Clair et Obscur) by Jack O’ The Clock, “perhaps the foremost modern dark Americana outfit” (Mike Borella, Avant Music News). It is a re-imagining of an album founding members Emily Packard and Damon Waitkus recorded back in the summer of 2003. The album features the original rhythm and violin tracks, bringing new lyrics, vocals, and an array of other overdubs by present band members Kate McLoughlin and Victor Reynolds.

PORTRAITS presents a collection of bite-sized, slice-of-life, mostly first-person portraits of individuals ranging from childhood to old age, bound up in the quietly desperate particulars of their lives. Each voice forges a unique alloy of characteristics, from resistance to resignation, earnestness to irony, but with a consistent undercurrent of humor.

Musically, you might think of these as front porch songs: hooky, energetic, sunny-side-up, reflective, fun, a little casual. Pure play and pleasure. It’s a side of Jack O’ the Clock that has always been present but has never been so concentrated in a single album, and because of the strange decade-spanning way this album came together, could never quite happen again.

“Fronted by the lithe, troubadour vocals of Damon Waitkus and accompanied by lush vocal harmonies, old-timey strings, fingerpicked guitar and shape shifting rhythms, Jack O’ The Clock weave folksy Americana with a fusion 70s rock vibe — think Crosby, Stills & Nash and Pearls Before Swine supported by Weather Report’s rhythm section. Through his balladesque lyrics, Waitkus inhabits a range of characters, exploring the inner monologues and waking dreams of resentful armed white men, dissociated self-impersonators and nocturnal bureaucrats.” -EMILY POTHAST, THE WIRE

“…Through 10 years of recordings, Jack O’ The Clock is now established as a category unto themselves. The music often takes the form of complex, contrapuntal pieces with beautiful interplay between the hammer dulcimer, bassoon, violin, and guitar. The intertwined themes build and meander…On top of this are Waitkus’s poignant vocals, adding to the melancholic atmosphere.

“Listening to Jack O’ The Clock invokes a twisted view of America post World War II – or perhaps projects that view to the rural blight of today. Lyrically, the group does not make a statement in particular. They offer no positions, polemics, nor solutions. Instead, their songs explore dark slices of life, unusual and disturbing happenings involving people both ordinary and strange” – MIKE BORELLA, AVANT MUSIC NEWS

Held By Trees To Release Second Album “Hinterland” Featuring Talk Talk/Hollis veterans Robbie McIntosh, Laurence Pendrous, Andy Panayi With Simone Marie Butler (Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain), Matt Simms (Wire), Jen Macro (My Bloody Valentine) and Others!

For Immediate Release

Held By Trees To Release Second Album “Hinterland” Featuring Talk Talk/Hollis veterans Robbie McIntosh, Laurence Pendrous, Andy Panayi With Simone Marie Butler (Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain), Matt Simms (Wire), Jen Macro (My Bloody Valentine) and Others!

“Hinterland” is the second LP by Held By Trees, taking in elements of jazz, post-rock, and ambient music and will be released on CD/Vinyl (and digital download only on Bandcamp) on Friday 4th April, 2025 on Tweed Jacket Music Ltd and Lasgo Records Distribution. The follow-up to 2022’s critically acclaimed debut, ‘Solace’, this new eight-piece album is a sonic journey through ambiguous spaces, within and without.

Once again, Held By Trees – helmed by composer/producer David Joseph – brings together living DNA from its chief influence, the latter work of Mark Hollis with Talk Talk, and as a solo artist. This includes this time his son Charlie Hollis who plays piano on four of the tracks. Returning Talk Talk/Hollis veterans are Robbie McIntosh on guitar, Laurence Pendrous on piano, Andy Panayi on flute, clarinet and saxophone (who are each member of the live HBT band), plus Martin Ditcham on drums/percussion and Simon Edwards on double bass.

Other notable contributors to the album include: Rob Coombes (Supergrass) on Hammond Organ, Stephen Gilchrist (Stephen Evens, Graham Coxon) on drums, Simone Marie Butler (Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain) on synths and sound effects, Matt Simms (Wire, It Hugs Back) on guitar, Norman Westberg (Swans) on guitar, Robert Poss (Band of Susans, Phil Niblock) on guitar, Simon Scott (Slowdive) with field recordings, Mark Simnett (Bark Psychosis) on drums and percussion, Jen Macro (My Bloody Valentine, Hurtling, Graham Coxon) on guitar, Chris Pedley (The Baker Brothers) on bass.

David Joseph said, “‘Hinterland’ is a meandering celebration of the vague, the between places, the forgotten, nameless margins – not just in the landscape around us physically, but also internally – somewhere in the middle of faith and doubt, joy and melancholy, departure and arrival.”

“The thrill of Held By Trees is bringing such a variety of musicians together and sculpting something surprising and unique from the ideas they submit. This album is an odyssey of guitar, with some of the most innovative guitarists of the last 50 years of alternative, left-field music taking part. ‘Hinterland’ is full of soundscapes using guitars like paintbrushes, painting a variety of rich, delicate, floating and abrasive textures that evoke the liminal spaces around us and within us.”

In a departure from previous releases, the artwork this time is supplied by Brighton-based abstract mixed-media artist, Gareth Hayward. David said, “Gareth’s artwork is the perfect visual pairing for the music. It asks us what we see within it, without dictating what or where it is. There is plenty of intentional ambiguity, which is central to the album’s musical theme. I adore Gareth’s use of negative-space and his visceral approach to capturing landscapes full of mood and mystery.”

For Immediate Release

The Moody Blues’ John Lodge USA Feb and March 2025 Tour – New Dates Added!

Performs Days of Future Passed Tour” – Playing the iconic album in its entirely, plus a selection of CLASSIC HITS

John Lodge, legendary bass player, songwriter and vocalist of The Moody Blues, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, will be back on the road in February and March with his electrifying ‘Performs Days of Future’ show, featuring a first set of Moody Blues classic hits, and a second set of this iconic album, performed in its entirety.

The tour kicks off on February 19th at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, and includes 12 dates in the NE, Midwest and Florida, plus his appearance on the ‘Rock and Romance Cruise’, sailing out of Fort Lauderdale on March 15. Then John will be taking his show to the UK for the very first time – ‘Bringing it Home’!

All dates are now on sale, with limited VIP packages available, go to: https://www.johnlodge.com/tour.

This is a unique opportunity to hear fan favorites such as ‘Isn’t Life Strange’, ‘Legend of a Mind’, ‘I’m Just a Singer (in a Rock and Roll Band)’ and ‘Ride my See-Saw’, plus this groundbreaking album. John and his band lovingly recreate these classic songs, in full symphonic glory, and together with his tributes to his bandmates, and the mesmerizing video of Graeme Edge reciting his poetry, the audience is truly transported back to Moody Blues concerts of the past.

Following a stroke at the end of 2023, John has gone from strength to strength, driven by his love for this music, and his deeply held desire to continue to share it with the fans. The critically acclaimed shows in July and November 2024 are testament to his passion and commitment, and as John says, his hope is that people leave with a little bit of joy, and certainly the audience can be seen leaving with Moodies magic around them.

Joining John on stage are his 10,000 Light Years Band featuring Alan Hewitt and Billy Ashbaugh (from the Moody Blues touring band), Duffy King and Jason Charboneau, plus Jon Davison of YES will again be joining John on stage to provide his soaring vocals on ‘Nights in White Satin’ and ‘Tuesday Afternoon’.

A lot of these places we used to go to as the Moody Blues, and I just want to give the fans a sense of that time again. It may not be a Moody Blues show, but Alan, Billy, Duffy, Jason and, of course Jon, create an incredible energy on stage, and such beautiful music. Then when Graeme appears on screen, and I turn to hear his beautiful words, it all makes me feel part of something very special, and I can feel I share it with the audience. Being on stage with them all, I think we all smile together, all of us on stage, and all of those in the audience. It’s a little moment away from the challenges of life.”

“Days of Future Passed” was released 58 years ago, and was arguably the start of progressive rock. John has surrounded himself with a band who put simply, love performing together, and who appreciate and respect the legacy of the music. The Moodies may not perform any more, and the loss of Graeme, Ray and Mike is felt deeply, but this show honours John’s friends and the music.

The electrifying show will also be in support of John’s new EP “Love Conquers All” out on Feb 14th, and available now for pre-order on Amazon and other online stores. Signed copies are also available including limited edition vinyl. The first single ‘Love Will Conquer All’ is available now on all streaming services and hit the No. 1 spot over New Year on the Fab Chart.

NorCal Guitarist and Singer-Songwriter PIET DALMOLEN Proudly Unveils His Long-Awaited Debut Solo LP TIME STANDS STILL

For Immediate Release

NorCal Guitarist and Singer-Songwriter PIET DALMOLEN Proudly Unveils His Long-Awaited Debut Solo LP TIME STANDS STILL

Arcata, CA – From the coastal cliffs of Northern California’s Emerald Triangle, guitarist/singer/songwriter PIET DALMOLEN proudly unveils TIME STANDS STILL, his long-awaited debut solo LP releasing January 17, 2025. Boasting eight eclectic compositions, this talisman resonates through an ambitious amalgam of sublime psychedelic rock, soulful jazzy blues, and indie-Americana. Bobbing and weaving amidst the foundational chemistry of bass, drums, and various keyboards, Piet’s superb guitar and understated vocals coalesce to create a dense, potent vessel of joy and vulnerability.

A veteran studio engineer and session guitarist for two decades, Dalmolen toured nationally in the mid-aughts with jam upstarts Nucleus, and subsequently gigged with numerous Northern California bands. These days he’s in DIY-mode across multiple roles for this intensely personal passion project. Ably assisted by Matt Engel on keyboards, Tommy Fitzmaurice on drums, and Ian Taylor on bass, TIME STANDS STILL was tracked across several sessions in 2023 at Odyssey Studios, a rustic barn situated on a prairie overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Here Piet Dalmolen was able to keep his focus solely on creativity and bandleading, and once the basic tracks were laid down, he overdubbed additional guitar and vocals at his own Universal Balance Studios in Arcata, CA, throughout 2024.

Taking in stride some big personal life changes after the disruption of the pandemic, and as an enthusiastic new surfer, PIET DALMOLEN took a much-needed vacation to Maui in the summer of 2023. It was an influential trip for Piet that resulted in most of the music heard on TIME STANDS STILL. This intentional collection reveals a reluctant poet reawakened, mining inspiration from life’s trials and tribulations, and discovering knowledge of self amid the glorious environs of sacred Hawaiian Islands. Piet was staying in Lahaina when the dry hurricane winds swept the now infamous fires down from the mountain into town, and he fled on foot with guitar on his back, eventually hitchhiking to the airport.

PIET DALMOLEN had spent the previous 15 years gigging with other bands and playing covers, and while grateful to be playing regularly, it was a long dry spell from creating his own music. Feeling inspired to dive back in and with a wealth of new material, he picked his local dream team of musicians and watched it all fall into place. “I love my band for their talent, aesthetic, and easy-going personalities,” says Piet. “The older I get the more I appreciate having the right people that I can rely on and have fun with, and thankfully they believe in my musical vision.”

TIME STANDS STILL was written, produced, mixed, and mastered all by PIET DALMOLEN. On this solo opening salvo, PIET DALMOLEN monologues abstract musings, illustrated with ruminations on love, loss, fatherhood, mortality, and new beginnings. Sturdy songcraft couched in a bare-bones analog aesthetic, the gritty grooves get drizzled with earthy textures and tasty guitar tones, whispering sweet melodies that make the eyes well up and chest weigh heavy. Music manifested in the wake of seismic change, waves of grief and personal evolution, TIME STANDS STILL traverses a wide swath of emotional and sonic topography: Floydian dreamscapes, prog-scented improv, sizzling surf-rock, while touching a plethora of points between.

The track “Being” serves as a lyrical centerpiece. Piet wrote the first chorus on his hotel balcony anticipating the arrival of the Maui storm, and the second chorus on the plane ride home. “The pretty guitar coda is something that just came out of me the morning of the fires,” says Piet, “before we had any idea what was to come. And the wave sounds are my own field recording from the trip, not stock. It feels poetic to have them timelessly etched into a record that means so much to me.”

There will be a TIME STANDS STILL record release event featuring the full band at the Arcata Playhouse on January 18, followed by Bay Area shows at Mac’s 19 Broadway in Fairfax on February 15, and at The Back Room in Berkeley on February 16.

TIME STANDS STILL is available January 17, 2025. Visit the PIET DALMOLEN website for more information: www.pietdalmolen.com
