Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit In The Sky Still Popular In 2012

Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit In The Sky Still Popular In 2012

1/23/2012 – Santa Rosa, CA – After 40 years, one of music’s greatest gospel-rock hits ‘Spirit In The Sky’, penned by Norman Greenbaum, remains as popular today in 2012 as it did in 1970 when it rocketed to number #1 in the US and UK. While being named song of the year by Cashbox magazine, the track would go on to sell two million copies in 1970 and through the next 4 decades would be featured in 47 movies and dozens of commerical ads and TV series. In addition, two British cover versions of “Spirit In The Sky” also made it to number one on the charts, making the song a three-time number one hit!

So the question remains, why does ‘Spirit In The Sky’ still resonate with the music listener today? Norman explains, “A few reasons: It’s just a great song, with a terrific production that has stood the test of time, still sounding as vibrant today as 40 years ago. It also sounds great in the car, yep, car radio. When we mixed it, we made sure it sounded as great on car stereos as it did on home systems. It has an unforgettable opening musical riff, at times referred to as ‘the heavy duty industrial fuzz tone’. It gives people chills listening to it. Plus, when it was included on Rock Band 2 it brought a new generation into the mix. Now that the song is aging in years, but not excellence, many fans have aged with it and now recognize it not only as a great song that reminds them of their life back then, such as taking their first date to my concert, ‘Spirit’ being the first album they ever bought, their parents screaming to turn the volume down, love making in the back seat to it and my favorite, naming their car ‘the green-bomb’, and as a song to take with them as we near the time to go up to the Spirit In The Sky. Because I answer my own e-mail, many people relate to me the circumstances of a loved one passing and how my song has brought them solace and each time they hear my song, either on the radio, in a movie or on TV, they are reminded that their loved ones are OK and looking down on them.”

The story behind the song “Spirit In The Sky” is an interesting one. The original idea for the song came from Norman watching a performance on TV one night by country legend Porter Wagoner, who was singing about a preacher. This inspired Greenbaum to write a religious rock song. Although many have believed through the years that Norman, born of Jewish heritage, was a ‘born again Christian’, in truth, this is not the case. He made the decision to challenge himself to writing a gospel lyric, hoping he wouldn’t flub it and meticulously crafted music that went on to surpass everyone’s expectations. The guitar riff to ‘Spirit In The Sky’ undoubtedly is just as important to the song’s success as the words and music. “My riff is a take on old blues riffs, common in the ’20s and ’30s,” Norman explains. “Although a few other songs have similar riffs, my riff really stands out, as I infused a few original notes and changes the others do not have. Plus, the fuzz just ripples your mind. It is a sound that has never been reproduced, another reason the song stands so well.”

Recently, Norman Greenbaum has redesigned his official website – http://www.spiritinthesky.com and has made available his much sought after CDs from the ’60s and ’70s, along with T-shirts, hats, mouse pads, signed photos and other memorabilia! Although Norman has not recorded anything in recent years, he is very active with his new website, posting messages to his fans and making available rare photos for viewing. “Since my website has been redesigned it is much more efficient and compact, with photo viewers and better links,” says Norman. “It also has an improved store, where I have introduced a new product, Going-Greenbaum tote bags; the small-sized bag is made of cotton and the large-sized bag is made of canvas. The new site also has music clips of all of my songs available on CD and ‘The Best of Norman Greenbaum’ import is available again. I also will be introducing some new shirt designs soon.”

Much to the excitement of his fans, Norman will be making a rare live appearance in February! “I’ll be doing a guest performance of 3 songs with the band Time In A Bottle at The Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa, CA on February 18th,” says Norman. “My original back-up singers The Stovall Sisters will be joining me, the first time ever this has happened on stage! Time In A Bottle is a local rock/soul band. The Stovall Sisters will also be doing a few of their own songs with the band.”

Finally, Norman has this to impart to aspiring songwriters everywhere: “Keep at it until it all fits, you’ll know when. One song will stand out. Put all your effort into that song. Of course, ‘catchy’ helps.”

What Brings You Happiness?

Being able to meditate and connect with my spiritual teacher and feeling surrounded by that Divine energy, seeing children having fun, watching old movies, walking with my Janee around towns and cities of the world, seeing my children grow to be wonderful adults spreading love and light, hearing a favourite song on the radio, relaxing and watching birds in the garden, hearing a funny joke, watching Man United playing great, cooking my favourite food, being with friends and listening to stories, reading Pat Conroy books, reading good honest reviews of my work, finding just the right ‘lyric’ and wondering where the songs come from, waking up and seeing my wife Janee and realizing how wonderful and beautiful she is, listening to Jean Sibelius symphonies, being thankful for the great events in my life, watching the 49rs win. Painting, remembering my humble beginnings, my family, those in heaven, and those on this amazing earth mother.

What Would You Change (If You Could) To Make Our World A Better Place?

Seeing the world deliver the promise of a good life to everyone, the end of all wars, living beyond war, the end of corruption, and slavery, a sharing of the bounty of the earth, using our talents to expand our dreams, to travel in space, meet beings from other worlds, join the enlightened ones, live in perfect harmony and good will to all men and women and children, to hear the new music, and see the new stories unfold……and most of all, a blessing on all beings ……for we are all truly one….

Progressive Rock Central.com – Interview with Progressive Rock Legend Jon Anderson

BY ANGEL ROMERO
– JANUARY 12, 2012

Jon Anderson – Photo by Tami Freed
Jon Anderson, the legendary progressive rock vocalist that fronted Yes for many years is back with numerous projects. The most interesting by far is Open, a long musical suite with four movements produced by Jon and Jane Anderson that has brought back the wondrous sounds that Anderson is known for. Jon Anderson composed the music and wrote the lyrics. Stefan Podell made the orchestration and additional music.
You made many progressive rock fans very happy withOpen. When did you start working on this project?
About a year ago…I started with an acoustic guitar, put down a framework, and then Stephan Podell did a wonderful orchestral arrangement…We talked about how best to make ‘Yes fans’ enjoy the journey, I think that was my motivation…
What instruments do you play on Open?
Just acoustic guitar.
And in general, what instruments do you play?
I’ll play anything, not great, but just enough to make it work…I love piano, and guitar mostly.
Who else participated in the Open recording?
Jane Luttenberger Anderson on angel Vocals; Stefan Podell on music and orchestration, 12 string guitar, classical guitar and bass; Zach Tenorio Miller on piano; Zach Page on electric guitar; Alexandra Cutler-Fetkewicz with Jon Fink and Susan Lerner on strings; Kevin Shima on acoustic guitar and vocals; Brian Hobart on Percussion; Stephan Junca on drums and African Percussion; Charles Scott on drum kit; Cal Poly A Cappella group (Robert Foster, Ian O’Rourke, Madelyn Frey, Jacob Stringfellow, Aaron Wolfe, and Amy Stevens); and additional backing vocals by Billy James.

The complexity of Open reminded me of your legendary solo album Olias of Sunhillow. Will there be more music in this direction?
I’m just working on the next ‘opus’…called ‘Ever’
You’ve had recent solo tours, including one with your with your old friend and former Yes colleague Rick Wakeman. How did that work out?
Rick Wakeman (left) & Jon Anderson (right)
Rick is fun to work with, he’s playing better than ever, and the songs we do are great to sing. Audiences love the banter between us,…and the new songs really have a different energy.

How is Rick doing health wise?
He’s really very well.
Will you be recording more with Rick Wakeman?
I hope this next few weeks we will work together.

Argentine Stick virtuoso Guillermo Cides mentioned recently that he will be working with you and Australian Truey Marks on a new project in 2012. Can you share some details about that?
Ask him to contact me please…
How do you find the time to play in so many projects?
It’s that time of my life, after nearly dieing in 2008, I realized I should try and finish my work…well, there’s more than I would believe…so I just keep working on the music…it helps everything…
You are a singer and also a songwriter. How do you work as a composer?
I usually sing with guitar, record everything I do, almost everyday a new song comes…it’s wonderful.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
The divine ‘love’ that surrounds us.
I’d like to take you back to the early 1970s. Yes made albums that are considered progressive rock masterpieces. I’m talking about Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer. What was happening at that time that led you and your band mates to compose such incredible music?
I was driven to try new music, we were being told to write ‘hit songs’…I just felt it would be a waste of the talent within the band, so I chose to escape, and help create new music…it is wonderful to look back at those times; we were in perfect ‘harmony’ with each other.
If you could gather any musicians or musical groups to collaborate with whom would that be?
I would start with Tony Levin, Billy Cobham, etc etc…
In this age of economic turmoil and social unrest, do you have a message you’d wish to impart through your music?
Change is good…and Change we must…
Jon Anderson
What music genres, groups or CDs are you currently listening to?
Amharic music…Ethiopian…
We interviewed the Senegalese singer Baaba Maal and asked what song was he completely addicted to – the one song that he will sing along with every time – and he told us his song was “One Love” by Bob Marley. What is your one song?
‘I will fix you’…and a million others…
What do you like to do during your free time?
Paint, cook, watch Soccer and ‘American Football..walk with my Janee.
What country would you like to visit?
China, I’ve been there 3 times, amazing culture……..Africa…India.
Which is your favorite city?
Paris.
What was the first big lesson you learned about the music business?
No such thing as a free lunch…
What other projects are working on?
A zillion projects…tons of them…

Spain’s Progressive Rock Legends Kotebel To Release Highly Anticipated New CD ‘Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble’

For Immediate Release

Spain’s Progressive Rock Legends Kotebel To Release Highly Anticipated New CD
‘Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble’

1/11/2012 – Madrid, Spain – With 5 albums released since 2000, including the highly acclaimed ‘Omphalos’ (nominated for ‘Best Foreign Record’ by ProgAwards in 2006) and ‘Ouroboros’ (Winner – ‘Best Foreign Record’ by ProgAwards in 2009), Kotebel is one of the main progressive rock acts to emerge from Spain and Latin America. And now, much to the anticipation of prog fans across the globe, Kotebel is preparing to release their 6th album ‘Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble’. “The main body of the album is formed by the four movements that comprise the ‘Concerto for Piano’,” explains keyboardist and founding member Carlos Plaza Vegas. “It is pure music; no reference to extra-musical elements. However, the other four pieces on the album are based on conceptual elements.”

Formed in 2000, Kotebel is an eclectic project, immersed in the mainstream of progressive “art” music. Kotebel’s music is an elaborate, yet accessible blend of avant-garde symphonic rock, with a wide range of influences from classical to jazz to world music. The group sites influences as diverse as Genesis, Debussy, YES, ELP, Ravel, Messiaen, Thinking Plague, The Enid, Steve Hackett, Gentle Giant, King Crimson and Chopin. Kotebel has participated in prestigious festivals including BajaProg (Mexico – 2004), Gouveia Art Rock (Portugal – 2007/2010), ProgSud (France – 2007), Madrid Art Music Festival (Spain – 2008/2009), Go Prog (Portugal – 2009), Crescendo (France – 2010), sharing the stage with artists like Robert Fripp, Magma, After Crying, IQ, Allan Holdsworth, Deus Ex Machina, Isildurs Bane, Jerry Marotta, Pat Mastelotto and others.

Here’s what the press has said about Kotebel:

“This is one stellar disc of symphonic progressive rock!” – Jerry Lucky – The Progressive Rock Files

“This is a masterwork!” – Vitaly Menshikov – Progressor

“Outstanding symphonic prog!” – César Inca – Progarchives

“One of the great contemporary prog rock bands!” – Nuno – Prognosis

“Kotebel appear to be content on exploring and extending the boundaries of their chosen genre, and are definitely a band to watch out for.” – Dave Sissons – DPRP.net

“The musicianship is top-notch!” – Yves Dube – Sea of Tranquility

Kotebel’s current line-up:

Carlos Franco Vivas – drums and percussion
César Garcia Forero – guitars
Jaime Pascual Summers – bass
Adriana Nathalie Plaza Engelke – keyboards
Carlos G. Plaza Vegas – keyboards

Between the years 2000 and 2008 Kotebel went through a number of line-up changes, with Carlos Plaza Vegas remaining as the driving force throughout. Kotebel’s configuration as a five piece instrumental ensemble in 2008 quickly became an efficient performance engine, exploring aesthetic grounds that required more complex and demanding skills as individuals and collective performers. Along with releasing an album ‘Ouroboros’ in 2009, Kotebel toured Japan in the summer of that year and participated in a number of music festivals and performances in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy. Between September and December 2011 the ensemble recorded their forthcoming album ‘Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble’, in which pre-orders are currently being taken. To be released in early 2012, the album will also include a DVD with a full rendition of the recording of the Piano Concerto.

“Since the first Kotebel album back in 2000, one of our goals has been to integrate elements of classical music in a language based in progressive rock,” explains Carlos. “’Ouroboros’ (2009) was a further step in that direction (for example, the ‘Ouroboros’ song is constructed upon a ‘Theme and Variations’ structure). However, it is in the ‘Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble’ where this integration has been taken to its greatest extent in our music.”

Finally, Carlos has this to impart to the listening public: “For those still not acquainted with our music, I would invite you to visit our website where we have plenty of fragments from each and every track on our albums. Kotebel’s language is very eclectic and appealing to both fans of more traditional prog as well as more adventurous ones.”

Examiner.com Review – Anderson/Wakeman, ‘The Living Tree In Concert Part One’

Sterling Whitaker-

It’s not the easiest thing to re-imagine the complex music of Yes in stripped-down arrangements for guitar, voice and keyboards, but that’s exactly what former Yes lead vocalist Jon Anderson and keyboardist Rick Wakeman did for this live album, which documents a series of performances the pair gave in support of their duo album The Living Tree.

The album’s track listing consists of familiar Yes classics interspersed with deep cuts from the Yes catalog, as well as songs from Anderson and Wakeman’s duo album and solo work. It’s not much of a musical stretch for songs like “The Living Tree (Part 1)” or “23/24/11” to come off in this setting, since they were essentially tailor-written for this approach, and the pair delivers strong versions of those songs. But it is the Yes material that is the most challenging, and produces the most surprising results both pro and con.

“And You and I” is perhaps the best of that lot; it turns out that a piece of material that was fairly densely orchestrated as recorded has a strong enough chord progression and melody to stand up in a sparser arrangement. You wouldn’t mistake it for Yes . . . take away the drums, bass and guitars from the Yes recording, and that’s essentially what you have here. But it works surprisingly well, as does “South Side of the Sky,” a fan favorite from Fragile that also receives the stripped-down treatment.

Anderson has performed “Long Distance Runaround” acoustically many times, so it’s not as much of a surprise that it works, but the duo’s quasi-reggae version of “Time and a Word” doesn’t serve the song as well as a straighter folk rendering probably would have.

It’s debatable whether this is actually progressive rock, per se; in the absence of most of the rhythmic arrangement elements, much of this material comes off more like progressive adult contemporary. But the dreamy atmosphere Anderson and Wakeman create proves a suitable showcase for the elements they brought to the music of Yes, and Anderson still possesses one of the most undeniably distinctive voices in rock music, even if he sings some of these songs in lower keys than the original recordings.

One very welcome addition is the closing song, “The Meeting,” a gorgeous performance of a mostly-overlooked song from the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe project.

If you’re looking for Yes, you won’t find it here. But if you’re open to interesting new interpretations of the music of Yes, there’s still plenty to like about The Living Tree In Concert Part One.

Bass Legend Jeff Berlin Records An Astonishing New CD

For Immediate Release

Bass Legend Jeff Berlin Records An Astonishing New CD

1/9/2012 – Clearwater, FL – Insiders who have heard bass legend Jeff Berlin’s newest CD are buzzing about the forthcoming release – a release that they are saying could possibly be the greatest bass album of all time! The word is that Jeff Berlin has recorded a jazz CD so astonishing that the artist himself is in shock with what he played! “I prepared for it by practicing 5 hours a day for weeks,” Jeff explains. “What came of my preparation was to record solos on the bass that I believe have never been heard before from a bass player!”

Also included on these virtuosic recording sessions are Richard Drexler on piano and upright bass and legendary drummer Mike Clark, best known for his work with Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, who had this to say about Jeff’s new CD: “Everyone knows that Jeff is a virtuoso, but on his new CD he went past this! I’ve played with all of the great jazz bassists in the world and Jeff is at the top of my list. We locked from the first beat! The harmonic ideas that he played were unbelievable, and our time was astonishing. Jeff is the most forward-looking bassist I have ever played with. Jeff played like he wasn’t afraid to take a chance at any moment – he played at the highest level without a net. There just isn’t a CD like this one anywhere. He is a player’s player, a total artist and it showed on our collaboration together!”

Jeff added that, “Richard and Mike made this CD happen! Without them I never could have had the support and interplay that pushed me to play what I played. Mike’s time was swinging like a pendulum. And Richard is a freak: he actually played acoustic bass while I was soloing and then put it down to walk to the piano and take a solo. I don’t know of anyone else who could have done what he did!”

Jeff Berlin’s new CD, titled ‘Low Standards’ due to the performance of two bass players and Jeff’s penchant for puns (his previous recording was called ‘High Standards’) is scheduled for release at the end of February 2012. ROCKTIMES Review – Anderson/Wakeman – The Living Tree In Concert

Steve Braun-

Almost to the day of the year after was “The Living Tree” appeared, Gonzo Multimedia has now produced the first part of the subsequent tour “Project 360″ as a CD on the market.”The Living Tree In Concert, Part One” was recorded in late autumn 2010 in the UK.According to rumors, “… Part Two,” the subsequent concert tour of the U.S. record in the spring of last year.
“The Living Tree,” the two ex-Yes Man presented only with its two ‘instruments’, voice and keyboards – there was definitely something! The basics were developed on a joint tour in 2006. The shooting began in early August 2010 for a CD that originally exclusively at the merchandising stand above Tour should be available. (It is thought better of it …) The images sent electronically to the two across the Atlantic back and forth. It speaks for its compositional and studio technical skills that so was in such a short time an album.
Arranged with piano, synths and acoustic guitar, the songs on “The Living Tree In Concert, Part One” small, mostly balladic art become. Jon Anderson’s unique voice floats over Rick Wakeman atmospheric, never to close more advisable sound architecture. This reduction comes mainly benefited the Yes-four songs that are seeded from any ballast, presenting a completely new appearance. This works even better as “South Side Of The Sea” [Note: here “Southside” titled!], Sometimes worse, as with the somewhat messed up, interpreted as a reggae “Time And A Word” – sometimes even grandiose: “And You And I “and” Long Distance Runaround run “the other songs loose from the rank.
The two parts of “The Living Tree” exude musical New Age feel-good atmosphere.Lyrically shines through again and again Anderson’s tendency for esoteric. The rest of the songs I like much better in person. “Morning Star”, “23/24/11” and especially “House of Freedom” are full of atmosphere-density high-caliber, which produce just by a more penetrating feeling thrifty instrumentation. In the booklet, the two musicians describe each other as soulmates who would complement each other compositionally ‘blind’. This is unusual when listening to this live album perfectly understandable. They merge into a Totaltiät that takes the attentive listener captive.
Understandable, the decision appears to bring out any double-CD, but instead split up “The Living Tree In Concert” appearing in two separate discs. After barely an hour is one thing but not killed by the easily digestible musical fare
An equally unusual and fascinating album is “The Living Tree In Concert, Part One” has become. No music for the rapid consumption ‘in between’ – who would have expected such a thing seriously by Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman.
If one of the esoteric stuff sometimes benevolently hides, one has – to suit the momentary season – the ‘soundtrack’ for a relaxing evening by the fireplace in the player.

Lords of Metal review – Anderson / Wakeman – The Living Tree Live In Concert Part One

Anderson / Wakeman – The Living Tree Live In Concert Part One
Gonzo Multimedia
file under prog / metal sympho
Winston : When Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman in 2010 finally came to it, without the usual bustle and fuss of their former lord Yes bread to record an album showed once again how special their musical talents match. In “The Living Tree ‘are nine songs, though with only keyboards and vocals, still quite varied. Some songs are a candidate for treatment Yes, others breathe an intimate and warm atmosphere in the form in which they are cast. One year after the tour that the two together under names in the UK, now with ‘The Living Tree In Concert Part One, “a live album. Obviously much work of that particular album, but also some Yes songs in an acoustic and stripped jacket just as charming maintained. For example the song “And You And I”, the legendary ‘Close To The Edge “album in 2012 will celebrate its 40th anniversary, it continues to stand as majestic. Anderson, now 67, has some wear on his voice, even through a recent illness, he still knows that feeling across. Like a Peter Gabriel that still can. Wakeman has lost none of his virtuosity and melodic provides a platform for Anderson, who makes good use of.You just hear this prog veterans together to read and write. It may sound harsh, but this combination gives me as a fan more than the current Yes formation able to produce. Anderson currently touring solo with bijtitel “The Voice of Yes’ and on this live album, he makes it again twice over that. Now it is hoped that a second part may hopefully come up with songs from the tour that Anderson and Wakeman recently in America. According to reports (see interview with Anderson elsewhere in this theater), Europe this two man project also live at work and I look very forward to it. This CD is a nice souvenir and hopefully a warm-up time.

Italian Alternative-Metal Group Klogr To Release Debut CD ‘Till You Decay’ and Tour US West Coast

For Immediate Release

Italian Alternative-Metal Group Klogr To Release Debut CD ‘Till You Decay’ and Tour US West Coast In January 2012

1/2/2012 – Milan, Italy – One of the heaviest new Alternative-Metal groups to emerge from Italy, Klogr (pronounced Kay-log-are), will be releasing their mind-blistering debut CD titled ‘Till You Decay’ in January 2012 on Valery Records. Described as “an alternative rock/metal album in which both the instrumental and the vocal lines are delivered very heavily at times and more melodic at other times creating the sound of Klogr”, fans of the band and music press worldwide have been anticipating the CD release.

The album is based on the concept that the society around us controls us, judges us, conditions us and ultimately suffocates us. A psychological game of massacre, control and power over the masses, in which they use fear and anxieties to destabilize a person into something more fragile, more controllable and more subservient… till you decay.

The Klogr’s name is a reference to the law of Weber-Fechner, developed in the second half of the the 800, which is known as the fundamental psychophysical relationship (S=K log R). The project, which resides on the thin line between alternative rock and alternative metal, is led by Gabriele “Rusty” Rustichelli (producer at ZetaFactory, former guitarist of SensAzionE and other Italian alternative projects). Klogr develops a a powerful sound that draws energy from a philosophy that challenges the contemporary culture, where every sense is cleverly used against men in the name of profit. Along with Rusty (vocals and guitars), and the other members of the Italian/American line-up include: Nicola Briganti (guitars and a member of Lena’s Baedream), Todd Allen (bass and a member of Beside Myself) and Filippo De Pietri (drums). All together they complete the Klogr circle.

The idea took shape in May 2010 and in June 2011 the group began recording their debut album at the ZetaFactory studio. From that point on, Klogr captured the attention of the public and aroused much curiosity among professionals and fans by posting several viral videos, showing the progress of the band in the studio. The date 11-11-11 brought the world premier of the group’s live show. The powerful attack of the eleven songs that make up the track list for ‘Till You Decay’ was greatly enjoyed and well-received by the enthusiastic audiences.

After the ten video presentations of the band’s sound, the first complete track to run on its network was “Live Dying”, the album’s opening track. “Bleeding”, the first chosen single due out in January, will be accompanied by a video that combines graphics and cinematography in line with the mood of Klogr. ‘Till You Decay’ is scheduled to be released worldwide on January 10, 2012 and will be supported by a US west coast tour and several European dates.
