The band has just released their first single, offering a fascinating preview of the musical journey that awaits. While the album boasts the presence of globally celebrated rock stars, it’s noteworthy that the lead vocalist for the single “Shine for You” is none other than Slavin Slavchev. As mentioned, “Miracles Beyond” features an ensemble of legendary musicians, including Simon Phillips (TOTO, Protocol, The Who, Judas Priest), Joseph Williams (TOTO), John Payne (ex-Asia), and Carl Sentence (Nazareth), each bringing their unique flair to the project. The artwork shared on the band’s Facebook page has already ignited curiosity and excitement, hinting at the magic “Miracles Beyond” is poised to deliver.

Intelligent Music Project captured attention as Bulgaria’s representative at Eurovision 2022 in Turin, showcasing their versatility on the international stage with their song “Intention.”

Milen Vrabevski, MD, producer, songwriter, founder of the project, and the mastermind behind the band, expressed his joy at the collaboration with top-notch musicians. He shared, “I’m so happy to present our eighth album with yet another magnificent line-up!! So great to have all these musicians on board again. This is Simon Phillips’s 6th album with us, John Payne’s 5th and Joseph Williams’s 4th. Such a star turnout is a special privilege for me, and I truly hope to bring to the audience some delight in those strange times. Enjoy our next world-class product!”

The “Miracles Beyond” lineup also includes the Grammy Award Nominee Ernest Tibbs and the producer’s favorite Richard Grisman.

Besides the aforementioned musicians, over the years the band has seen a stellar lineup, including John Lawton (Uriah Heep, Lucifer’s Friend), Ronnie Romero (Rainbow, Michael Schenker’s Group), Nathan East (Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Toto, Stevie Wonder and more), Tim Pierce (Joe Cocker, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper and more), Bobby Rondinelli (Rainbow, Black Sabbath), and Todd Sucherman (Styx).

Banned From Utopia:

Ray White – vocals, guitar
One of the most powerful and distinctive voices that ever graced a Zappa vocal, Ray White. Ray White’s distinctive, powerful voice was first heard interpreting Zappa’s music in 1976. From that beginning, he became an integral member of Frank’s band through 1984, and can be seen on the DVD recorded the summer of that year in New York, “Does Humor Belong In Music?” A former member of the Edwin Hawkins Singers gospel group, he also brings a solid R&B guitar style to the blend, both as a rhythm player and as a soloist. Looking towards future creative endeavors with Banned From Utopia, Ray is also a gifted writer and lyricist

Robert Martin – vocals, keyboards, saxophone, French horn
Keyboards, horns, and of course, the voice that always made Frank smile, Robert Martin brings it all. Robert (Bobby) Martin joined Frank Zappa in 1981 and sang and played various instruments on every tour from then on, through the final tour in 1988. In addition to the diverse sonic palette Robert brought to the band with his multi-instrumental skills, Zappa relied heavily on Robert’s unique vocal power and range to enhance the variety of musical styles Frank explored in all his performances. In any moment, Frank might switch from heavy metal to classic Doo Wop, or anything in between, and Robert would be right there..

Scott Thunes – guitar, vocals
Scott Thunes played with Zappa’s band from 1981 to 1988, and plays on such albums as “The Man From Utopia”, “Them or Us,” “Broadway the Hard Way,” “You Can’t Do That on Stage Anymore,” “Does Humor Belong In Music?,” “The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life,” “Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention,” “Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch,” “Make a Jazz Noise Here,” and “Guitar,” a double-album compilation of Zappa’s live guitar solos. His most prominent bass performance can be heard on Frank Zappa’s “Valley Girl,” which peaked at #32 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Robbie Mangano – guitar, vocals
Robbie has performed with Zappa Tribute band Project/Object, playing bass and guitar with members of Frank Zappa’s band, and embarked on his first tour and first overseas gigs through that ensemble. Soon after he would begin touring with more Zappa alumni in The Grandmothers Of Invention. Most recently he has toured with Sean Lennon & Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Jamie Kime – guitar
Jamie Kime has performed and recorded with Dweezil Zappa’s Zappa Plays Zappa project from 2006 until 2012. More recently, he did a European tour with The Banned From Utopia. Earlier this year, Jamie Kime recorded his very first solo album: “Alleys.” Some standout moments include gigs w/ The Boneshakers (feat. Texas blues/soul legend Malford Milligan), Jewel, the original lineup of a Zappa Plays Zappa – with whom he collected a Grammy Award in 2009, the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the World Premiere of Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels Orchestral Suites in 2013, and rock legend Dr. John. The Jamie Kime Group performs on the first Monday of every month at the world-famous Baked Potato in Studio City, CA.

Joel Taylor – drums
Joel Taylor has toured or recorded with artists such as Greg Howe, Brian Bromberg, Mike Garson, Al Di Meola, Frank Gambale, Allan Holdsworth, Banned From Utopia, and appears on Yanni’s live concert video Tribute.

The Paul Green Rock Academy

The Paul Green Rock Academy (PGRA) is the latest music program from School of Rock founder Paul Green. From the very beginning of his teaching career Paul has taught the music of Frank Zappa, calling it “one stop shopping for musical education.”

While co-headlining the German Zappa festival Zappanale in 2023 Paul and his students got to see Banned From Utopia in action, and vice versa, and an instant bond was formed between the acts.

Watch The Paul Green Rock Academy plays Zappa at Zappanale! https://youtu.be/yRtjUgb-MRc

The students of PGRA are honored to be going on this tour with BFU and will learn so much from the experience, while also thrilling audiences with their own fiery renditions of Zappa classics and deep cuts.

Alchemy Records Elevates the Vibe With “Momentarily,” the Highly Anticipated New Album From Guitarist Jon Durant

For Immediate Release:

Alchemy Records Elevates the Vibe With “Momentarily,” the Highly Anticipated New Album From Guitarist Jon Durant

PORTLAND, OR – Alchemy Records is thrilled to announce the release of “Momentarily,” an ensemble tour de force from celebrated composer guitarist Jon Durant. The album showcases the best of Durant’s unique skill set, an amalgamation of transcultural, jazz-related styles, that gives way to euphoric, universally relatable grooves and soundscapes. A trio recording featuring Durant alongside longtime musical partners Colin Edwin (bass) and Andi Pupato (drums/ percussion), both legends in their own right, this musical jewel showcases rare mastery through individually compelling tracks and comprehensive arcs.

The responsive and fluid interaction of these three collaborators immediately draws listeners in. Created initially as a series of guitar improvisations by Durant, the composer then developed and rearranged the pieces for trio. Grounded musical elements beautifully balance freely improvised aspects, hinting at one of the key ingredients of Durant’s signature, sublime sound. The seamless flow between composition and improvisation leaves the listener in an effortless state of engagement.

Throughout “Momentarily” Durant’s explorative guitar leads the way. His expressive use of fretless guitar on all but one of the tracks “shows he is one of the precious few practitioners on the instrument that elevate it beyond its usual presence as a mere novelty.” (All About Jazz) In addition, his use of guitar synth – in this case playing a modified sample of an Armenian Duduk – adds a breathy counterpoint to his emotionally tinged guitar parts.

Percussionist Andi Pupato (Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin, Andreas Vollenwider, Fractal Sextet) shines throughout with his totally unique hybrid kit comprising both hand drums and conventional drum set. This distinctive collection of timbres emotes the open space of European jazz with considerable Middle Eastern elements that the hand drums reveal alongside Durant’s Fretless guitar. Anchoring the whole process is bassist Colin Edwin (O.R.k., Gaudi, Burnt Belief), with whom Durant has worked extensively over the past 12 years. On “Momentarily” he is playing acoustic basses (upright and fretless acoustic) providing a sonorous low end balancing out the whole picture.  His beautifully melodic playing on the opening track “In A Moment” provides especially delightful interaction with Durant and Pupato.

Among the standout tracks on the album is the epic “Rockets on Kyiv.” Originally conceived and recorded on the morning Russia bombed the glass bridge in Kyiv (where Durant, Edwin and Ukrainian singer Inna Kovtun had filmed many scenes in the video for their song “Gannochka”). When Durant steps on the distortion on this one, you can instantly feel the deep emotions he was experiencing that morning. In addition, the one track with fretted guitar (“Bitter Wind”) shows a depth of gratitude towards his Scandinavian musical influences.

Momentarily” will be available on Bandcamp beginning March 29, 2024, and all streaming services on April 16, 2024.

About Jon Durant
Explorative · Expressive · Transcultural · Texture-driven
Guitarist, composer, and producer Jon Durant is one of the world’s most distinguished proponents of creative, transcultural jazz. With his impressive legacy of collaborative work and highly acclaimed, genre-defying albums, Durant is “one of the reigning masters of what might be called ‘infinitely manipulated atmospheric guitar effects’… [He] sets a standard to be defined by… [with] brilliance and vision.” (All Music) Combining a nuanced and emotive fretless playing style with explorative effects, Durant integrates aspects of jazz, ambient music, progressive rock, and ethnically sourced material in lush, multi-textured melodies. His signature “guitar clouds” create compelling textures and moods over which he brings directionality with enticing riffs and solos. Sought out for his uniquely American aesthetic in a predominantly European style, Durant is a go-to collaborator for multi-genre, improvised music. In partnership with renowned bassist Colin Edwin, Durant has formed the duo Burnt Belief, releasing four albums and creating “elegant, sophisticated music of multiple genres… [that] evolves toward the best of many worlds and still sounds like nobody else… a sonic paradise of the uppermost quality.” (Prog Archives) Durant is also a member of the celebrated Fractal Sextet, with guitarist / composer Stephan Thelen, pianist Fabio Anile, Colin Edwin, and drummers Yogev Gabay and Andi Pupato. Of their debut, All About Jazz commented, “Durant’s guitar is a near-perfect stylistic counter…. he is one of the precious few practitioners on the instrument that elevates it beyond its usual presence.” Durant splits his time between Boston and Portland, Oregon, and frequently travels to Europe for musical projects. As the founder and producer of Alchemy Records and with an extensive discography that includes eleven solo albums, Durant has “delivered pristine music year after year… effortless and sure.” (Art Rockin)

Markus Reuter & Stefano Castagna To Release New Collaborative Album “Sea of Hopeless Angels”

For Immediate Release

Markus Reuter & Stefano Castagna To Release New Collaborative Album “Sea of Hopeless Angels”

An unexpected concerto. The streets of Berlin. Nourishment and exhaustion. The celestial, moving among us. All of these things might describe (or, more accurately, permeate) Markus Reuter’s latest project – a spontaneous collaboration with Stefano Castagna.

From a strictly Reuterian perspective, “Sea of Hopeless Angels” could be seen as a reaction to Markus’ furious and abrasive work with the free-rock improvisation quartet Anchor & Burden, one of his central priorities during 2022. At the same time, it stems directly from that project (having emerged in the heart of actual band time) and also serves as an intentional sequel-of-sorts to the “Anchor and Burden – Musica 2021” album which, while consisting of solo soundscapes, served as a conceptual introduction to the band. An understanding and acceptance of music as being both fundamental and stabilizing, while also being a grave and sometimes disruptive weight, underpinned both band and solo recording; and also eventually left its imprint on this new work.

The seeds of what would become “Sea of Hopeless Angels” were several unedited “live-in-the-studio” electric touch guitar solos by Markus, recorded at Castle Studios, Germany, 26 July 2022 (during day two of a three-day recording session for the Anchor & Burden band’s ‘Kosmonautik Pilgrimage’). Unusually – especially considering the ferocity of his recent work – Markus mostly selected clean instrumental tones, feeling that after much previous experimentation he’d finally found a way to speak through them musically. From there, the solos ended up in the hands of the album’s mixer, Stefano, and it was there that they underwent a new transformation.

Although Stefano’s connection with Markus goes back to the recording of mixing of Markus’ “TRUCE 2” album in 2021 (and his mixing wizardry also helped to hone the “Mata Atlantica” album), this is the first time that the two of them have collaborated on composition. From his own Ritmo&Blu studios in Pozzolengo, northern Italy, Stefano has created and produced recordings of Italian indie music, film and television soundtracks, dance music and performances for theatre, ballet and visual art exhibitions. However, his true roots are at that point where 1980s art rock intertwines with jazz, Mediterranean music and experimental sound (something reflected in his Flos project with Luca Formentini, with its mixture of invented instruments, found sound and avant-pop songcraft). It is this nexus of inspirations which drives his sympathies with Markus. It informed their work together on “TRUCE 2”, and drew Markus into the same year’s “Mask of Confidence” project (a collaboration between Stefano, Fabio Trentini and Jeff Collier, which hearkens back to the keystone art-pop work of Mick Karn and Japan).

Inspired to bring out his own palette of sounds, Stefano took on this set of Reuter solos and produced instinctive counterpart work, gradually building up to become a sympathetic one-man orchestra. “Listening through, I perceived a very free and sinuous narrative, undulating between some slow meditative sections and some faster, rhythmic moments. I have tried to support this narrative throughout, keeping his performances always in the foreground, highlighting the most outstanding parts, adding sounds and instruments when needed (my own vocals, samples, bass or synth sounds and electronic variations added in the mixing process). It’s just as if I let Markus tell his story and let it guide me throughout, without too much thinking.

“As I listen to the final result, I realize that I was playing out the lesson I learnt from two records that were pivotal in my artistic education, Fripp/Summers’ ‘I Advance Masked’ and Eno/Byrne’s ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’, famously conceived and brought about by a duo rather than a band.”

Markus concurs with this particular connection, adding, “the vibe quite strongly reminds me of the instrumental half of David Sylvian’s ‘Gone to Earth’ album.”

The music on “Sea of Hopeless Angels” is also directly inspired by Wim Wenders’ celebrated “Damiel and Cassiel” films – “Der Himmel über Berlin” (“Wings of Desire”) and “In weiter Ferne, so nah!” (“Faraway, So Close”) – in which angels hover above pre- and post-unification Berlin and are gradually, inexorably and transformatively drawn towards the lives of its human inhabitants. Although the chosen titles of several of these pieces refer directly to characters from the films, the music remains mysterious; and reluctant to draw a straightforward picture.

Stefano’s initial responses and reactions to the music also informed the selection of the album’s visual component – although, as opposed to his instinctive musical choices, the choice of cover art in particular was much more deliberate and considered.

All of the pieces on “Sea of Hopeless Angels” feature video accompaniment drawn from the Italian painter and video-artist Aldo Grazzi archives, with two of them (including the currently viewable title track) also accompanied by live-in-the-studio footage of Markus’ original performances.

Markus: “What I love about this record in particular is that it is the marriage of spontaneous creation and considered composition. The video that shows me playing in the studio is wondrous because of that. It would be impossible to play like I do if it was pre-planned/composed.”

Celebrated Time/Life Photographer Ben Martin’s Work on Display at the Artplex Gallery in Beverly Hills  “Illuminating Shadows” March 16 – April 12, 2024

Opening Saturday, March 16 from 4 – 6 PM!

Artist’s Portraits in Gelatin Silver Estate Prints of Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko, Larry Rivers, Marisol Escobar and Salvador Dali!

Artplex Gallery proudly presents “Illuminating Shadows” – the remarkable works of distinguished photographer Ben Martin from March 16 through April 12, 2024. His exhibited silver gelatin photographic prints serve as captivating portraits, particularly highlighting artists in their studios. In his Artists’ Studios series, Martin intimately photographs influential artists of the twentieth century including Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dali, Mark Rothko, Marisol Escobar, and Larry Rivers among others. These intimate glimpses of these monolithic artists showcase Martin’s ability to capture the essence of the subject and these iconic moments

Ben Martin was TIME Magazine’s first New York Bureau staff photographer covering wars, fashion, politics, arts, business, and sports for TIME, Life, Fortune, People, and Sports Illustrated for thirty-three years. He immortalized evocative images that defined the 1960’s such as Richard M. Nixon’s haggard 5 o’clock shadow, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s march to Montgomery, Alabama, and John F. Kennedy’s grieving widow and children. His exhibited silver gelatin photographic prints are portraits of artists in their studios.

Ben Martin

Ben Martin was married to the actress Kathryn Leigh Scott (1971-1990), best known for her roles on legendary gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, with whom he co-founded Pomegranate Press, a book publishing company. The two remained close friends and business partners until his death February 10, 2017 at age 86.

“Ben Martin’s stunning portraits of Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dali, Mark Rothko, Larry Rivers and Marisol Escobar, illuminate the pop art, abstract-expressionist and surrealist painters and sculptors that defined the 60s art world,” says Kathryn Leigh Scott, the photographer’s former wife and archivist.

Rock Guitar Hero STEVE STEVENS Explores The Dark Side Of Progressive Rock On New Single “Darkest Hour” With Supergroup THE PROG COLLECTIVE, Preview Haunting New Album!

For Immediate Release

Rock Guitar Hero STEVE STEVENS Explores The Dark Side Of Progressive Rock On New Single “Darkest Hour” With Supergroup THE PROG COLLECTIVE, Preview Haunting New Album!

Album features performances by Steve Morse, King Crimson violinist David Cross, GnR guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, and keyboard legend Patrick Moraz plus members of Weather Report, Utopia, Angel, Soft Machine, Gong, and more!

Los Angeles, CA – As longtime guitarist and co-writer for the powerhouse rock hitmaker Billy Idol, Steve Stevens is widely celebrated as a master of composing forceful, electrifying rock melodies that balance their intensity with an undeniable mainstream appeal. It’s that melodic sensibility matched with an impressive technical mastery that has made Stevens one of the most sought after collaborators in music today. Recently, Stevens accepted an invitation to contribute to the new album from The Prog Collective and the result is one of the purest expressions of Stevens’s creativity ever captured.

For the uninitiated, The Prog Collective, founded and helmed by producer/multi-instrumentalist and famed bassist for Yes Billy Sherwood, has united some of the finest musicians of rock, jazz, metal, pop and everything in between since its founding in 2012. The group’s newest studio effort, entitled Dark Encounters, takes a deliberate turn toward a more brooding and melancholic musical path, filled with haunting ambience and eerie melodic passages. All of this makes Stevens the perfect partner for an exploration into the darker side of prog rock. Check out the album’s first single and the album’s leadoff track, “Darkest Hour,” which is released today on all music platforms.

New York Pop-Rock Ensemble Joyous To Release Debut Album

For Immediate Release

New York Pop-Rock Ensemble Joyous To Release Debut Album

New York’s celebrated pop-rock group Joyous is releasing their debut album! The band formed in 2015 and features lead singer Joy Pratt, who is also the main songwriter, often humming bass lines into her husband & bassist Randy’s ear. Randy Pratt is best known for his work with The Lizards, Cactus and Ruffyunz.

Joy and Randy write the lyrics together. When guitarist Pat Klein noticed the collection of catchy gems the married couple had assembled, he came on board without a second thought. Pat’s voice blends sweetly with Joy. Add perfect pop percussionist Phil Weiss and there was the Joyous sound!

Pat, a world class engineer, and Randy, owner of a world class recording studio, assured the record’s quality (both were members of classic rock legends The Lizards). Pat’s knack for arranging put the finishing touches on this 43-minutes that sounds like a greatest hits collection.

The band did a video themselves in their studio “on the cheap.” Next step is a big production video.

Joy wrote a happy, feel-good record for a troubled world. With guest appearances from many of New York’s best players and singers, here it is!
